approximately 2 million units. Indian auto industry, promises to become the major automotive

industry in the upcoming years and the industry experts are hopeful that it will touch 10 million

    units mark.

Indian automobile industry is involved in design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale

of motor vehicles. There are a number of global automotive giants that are upbeat about the

expansion plans and collaboration with domestic companies to produce automobiles in India.

The major car manufacturers in India are Maruti Udyog, Hyundai Motors India Ltd., General

Motors India Pvt. Ltd., Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd., Hindustan

    Motors etc.

In India automobile industry is one of the largest industries in the global presence. Since it is the

leader in the products and process technologies in the manufacturing sector, it has been one of

the reason to drive the economy growth. During the last decade, well directed efforts have been

made to provide a new look to the automobile policy for realizing the sector's full potential for

the economy. Aggressive marketing by the auto finance companies have also played a significant

role in boosting automobile demand, especially from the population in the middle income group .

It is one of the industries in India which provides employment in large extent. The automobile

industry in the country is one of the key sectors of the economy in terms of the employment

opportunities that it offers. The industry directly employs close to around 0.2 million people and

indirectly employs around 10 million people. The prospects of the industry also has a bearing on

the auto-component industry which is also a major sector in the Indian economy directly

    employing 0.25 million people.

All is not well with the automobile industry the world over currently with the slowdown that has

gripped most of the major economies of the world. The gap between the manufacturing capacity

volume and the assembly volume is growing by the day and has worried the manufacturers. This

state of affairs has triggered a lot of cutthroat competition and consolidation in the industry. Cost

reduction initiatives have come to be the in thing in the global industry today. Towards this

direction, many automobile factories are being closed down.

According to the Philip Kotlar, 1"Advertising is any paid form of non personal presentation of

ideas, goods and services by an identified sponsor."

Advertising is a form of communication that typically attempts to persuade potential customers

to purchase or to consume more of a particular brand of product or service. Many

advertisements are designed to generate increased consumption of products and services

through the creation and reinvention of the "brand image. For these purposes, advertisements

sometimes embed their persuasive message with factual information. Every major medium is

used to deliver these messages, including television, radio, cinema, magazines, newspapers,

video games, the Internet, carrier bags and billboards. Advertising is often placed by an

advertising agency on behalf of a company or other organization

    Types of Advertisements

    Persuasive Advertising:

In this type the advertiser tries to persuade the public to buy his product, by explaining the

various good qualities that the product possesses over other products.

    Competitive Advertising:

This is carried out by different producers of different brands of the same product. Each producer

tries to compete with other producers in trying to capture the market. The advertiser uses

techniques that are persuasive and aggressive to achieve his target. Example, the advertiser

claims that his product is best in terms of quality, performance and durability. Example: Biggs

    Butter is best.

    Informative Advertising:

In this type information is passed on to the consumers about availability of products, changes in

fashion and how to use the products. Under informative advertising the following goods and

    services are advertised:

Advertising in Trade and Technical Journals: These advertisements contain technical

    information about goods.

Advertising of Particular Events: Trade fairs, exhibitions, concerts and sporting activities areexamples of such advertising. In this type people are informed about such events and are

    persuaded to attend such events.

Advertising of Employment Opportunities: In this type people come to know about the various

    employment opportunities available.

    Generic Advertising (Collective):

When all the producers in one industry combine to advertise their product, it is called generic

advertising. These advertisements are usually sponsored by trade associations. The producers

group together to share the costs and to promote the product hoping to increase the overall sales

of the product.Example: Drink more tea.

    INTRODUCTION OF MARUTI FOUR WHEELER

    COMPANY

Based inGurgaon, In dia,Maruti Suzuki India Limitedis Suzuki's largest and most valuablesubsidiary with an annual production of 1,018,365 units in the fiscal 20092010.

    [14]Suzuki has a 54.2%

stake in the Indian auto giant and the rest is owned by the various Indian public and financial institutions.

The company was incorporated in 1981 and is listed on the Bombay Stock ExchangeandNational

Stock Exchange of India.[15]In 20052006, the company had a 54% market share of the passengercar market in India.

[16]Nearly 75,000 people are employed directly by Maruti and its partners.

Maruti Suzuki was born as aGovernment of Indiacompany, with Suzuki as a minor partner, to make

a lower priced car for middle class India. Over the years, the product range has widened, ownership has

changed hands and the customer has evolved.

Maruti Suzuki offers 14 models, ranging from India's one-time best selling car,Maruti 800, for less

thanINR200,000 (US$ 5000) to the premiumsedanMaruti Suzuki Kizashi and luxury SUV Maruti

Suzuki Grand Vitara. Maruti 800 was the first model launched by the company in 1983 followed by mini-

vanMaruti Omniin 1984. Both models were huge success in their respective categories because of the

use of high-end technology and good fuel efficiency.Maruti Gypsy, launched in 1985, came intowidespread use with theIndian ArmyandIndian Police Servicebecoming its primary customers. The short-livedMaruti 1000too achieved moderate success until it was replaced byMaruti

Esteemin 1994, to counter increasing competition in the medium-sedan category.

Maruti Zen, launched in 1993, was the company's second compact car model and also became

extremely popular in India because of its high performance. The company went on to launch another

compact carMaruti Wagon-Rfollowed byMaruti Balenoin 1999. However, with increasing

competition fromTata,Hyundai,HondaandDaewoo Motors, Maruti was not able to achieve the

same success with Baleno as it had with its earlier models. So it replaced Maruti Suzuki Baleno with the

Suzuki SX4. Currently Suzuki SX4 is facing stiff competition from theHonda City.

In 2000,Maruti Altowas launched. The launch ofTata IndicaandHyundai Santrohad affected

Maruti's sales but Alto helped secure the company's position as the auto leader in India. It is currently the

largest selling car in India. The Maruti models include MarutiSuzuki Grand Vitara, launched in

2003,Maruti Versa, launched in 2004, MarutiSuzuki Swift, launched in 2005,Maruti ZenEstiloand MarutiSuzuki SX4, launched in 2007. The Alto, Swift and SX4 are leaders in their

respective segments in the Indian Market.

On 14 February 2011, Maruti Suzuki India, a Suzuki subsidiary in India, announced that it achieved one

million total accumulated production volume of the Alto. The Alto has reached the million units mark in

just seven years and five months since its launch on September 2000. The last half of the million has

come in a record 25 months. The Alto has been India's largest volume-selling car, every month, for the

past 37 consecutive months. Its popularity has continued to grow since its launch, with customers

attracted to its low price with fuel efficiency. With this the Alto became the third car in the Maruti Suzuki

stable to cross the million units mark. Previously, the Maruti 800 and the Omni had exceeded the million

internationally, enjoying good outcomes in Algeria and Chile.

Maruti Exports Limited is the subsidiary of Maruti Udyog Limited with its major focus on exports and it

does not operate in the domestic Indian market. The first commercial consignment of 480 cars were sent

to Hungary. By sending a consignment of 571 cars to the same country, Maruti crossed the benchmark of

3,000,000 cars. Since its inception export was one of the aspects the government has been keen to

encourage. Every political party expected Maruti to earn foreign exchange. But compared to Hyundai,

Maruti Suzuki is poor on export front.

HISTORY OF MARUTI FOUR WHEELER COMPANY

In 1909, Michio Suzuki (18871982) founded the Suzuki Loom Works in the small seacoast village

ofHamamatsu, Japan. Business boomed as Suzuki builtweaving loomsforJapan'sgiant silk

industry.[7]In 1929, Michio Suzuki invented a new type of weaving machine, which was exported

overseas. Suzuki filed as many as 120 patents and utility model rights. [citation needed] The company's first 30

years focused on the development and production of these exceptionally complex machines. [citation needed]

Despite the success of hislooms, Suzuki realized his company had to diversify and he began to look at

other products. Based on consumer demand, he decided that building a small car would be the most

practical new venture. The project began in 1937, and within two years Suzuki had completed severalcompactprototypecars. These first Suzuki motor vehicles were powered by a then-innovative, liquid-

cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder engine. It featured a cast aluminumcrankcaseandgearboxand

generated 13 horsepower (9.7 kW) from a displacement of less than 800cc.

With the onset of World War II, production plans for Suzuki's new vehicles were halted when the

government declared civilian passenger cars a "non-essential commodity." At the conclusion of the war,

Suzuki went back to producinglooms. Loomproduction was given a boost when the U.S. government

approved the shipping of cotton to Japan. Suzuki's fortunes brightened as orders began to increase from

domestic textile manufacturers. But the joy was short-lived as the cotton market collapsed in 1951.

Faced with this colossal challenge, Suzuki's thoughts went back to motor vehicles. After the war, the

Japanese had a great need for affordable, reliable personal transportation. A number of firms began

offering "clip-on" gas-powered engines that could be attached to the typical bicycle. Suzuki's first two-

wheel ingenuity came in the form of a motorized bicycle called, the "Power Free." Designed to be

inexpensive and simple to build and maintain, the1952 Power Freefeatured a 36 cc, one

    horsepower,two-strokeengine.[8]

An unprecedented feature was the double-sprocket gear system,

enabling the rider to either pedal with the engine assisting, pedal without engine assist, or simply

disconnect the pedals and run on engine power alone. The system was so ingenious that the patent office

of the new democratic government granted Suzuki a financialsubsidyto continue research in motorcycle

engineering, and so was born Suzuki Motor Corporation.

In 1953, Suzuki scored the first of many racing victories when the tiny 60 cc "Diamond Free" won its classin theMount FujiHill Climb.[8]

HISTORY OF TATA FOUR WHEELER COMPANY

The Tata Indica is ahatchbackautomobilerange manufactured byTata MotorsofIndia. It is the first

passenger car from Tata Motors and is also considered India's first indigenously developed passenger car. As

of August 2008, more than 910,000 Indicas were produced, and the platform had spawned off close to 1.2

million vehicles.[1]The annual sales of Indica has been as high as 144,690 units in 2006-07.[2]Currentmonthly

sales of Indica is around 8000 units. The models have also been exported toEurope,Africaand other countries

    since late in 2004.

    [3]

On 30 December 1998,Tata Motors(previously calledTELCO) introduced the most modern car ever to be

designed by an Indian company: the Indica. Initially introduced with the caption "More car per car," the ad

campaign focused on roomy interiors and affordability. Within a week of its unveiling in 1999, the company

received 115,000 bookings.[4]In two years, the Indica became the number one car in its segment.

Partly designed and developed by Tata Motors, it is a five-doorcompacthatchbackwith a

1.4 Lpetrol/dieselI4engine designated as 475DL internally. This is a homegrown engine which is derived from

the engine used by Tata in their line of pickups and SUVs earlier but with a reduced stroke. The original engine

was designated as 483DL which stood for 4-cylinder and 83 mm stroke.

The Indica offered options like air conditioning and electric windows, which were previously restricted to only

upmarket imported cars in India. Three years later the Indica was exported to European markets for the first

time, and from 2003 the Indica wasbadge engineeredand sold in the UK as theRover CityRover. This vehicle

ceased production in April 2005 when MG Rover went bankrupt, and did not resume production when new

ownersNanjing Automobilelaunched its own versions of the MG Rover range in 2007.

The outer body styling was done by Italian design houseI.DE.A Institute, under contract from Tata Motors, with

heavy interaction with Tata's in-house design team. The engine, however, was indigenous.

    Tata Indica, India

When first launched, the Indica prompted many complaints from early purchasers, who claimed that the vehicle

did not deliver horsepower and gas mileage as promised.[citation needed] In response to the customer complaints,

Tata Motors re-engineered the internals of the car and launched it as Indica V2 (version 2), which solved most

of the complaints and emerged as one of the most sought after cars in the Indian automobile industry. Later, it

was again updated, now marketed as the "Refreshingly New Indica V2". This was followed by the next variant

of Indica, current in early 2008, called the Indica V2 Xeta Petrol, which delivers 70 PS (51 kW; 69 hp) of power

at a fuel efficiency of 14 km/l (about 33 mpg U.S., fuel consumption of 7.1 L/100 km) under standard test

conditions.[6]In Indian city conditions, fuel economy can drop to about 10 km/l (about 23.5 mpg U.S., 10

    L/100 km).[7]

Since the V1 and V2 which were visually identical, Tata had applied styling updates to the Indica in 2004 [8]and

    2007.[9]

In India, three versions were available with different trim levels.

    Indica V2 1.4 L diesel (naturally aspirated engine in the DLE and DLS; turbocharged option in the DLS;

    turbocharged and intercooled DLG and DLX; DiCOR engine offered in the DLS and DLG);

    Indica V2 Petrol

1.4l Petrol Carbureted (Indica 2000) 1.4L petrol with Hitachi ECU, 1.2L and 1.4L petrol

    with Bosch ECU (Indica Xeta), 1.2 L LPG (GLE & GLS versions only);

Indicab 1.4 L naturally aspirated diesel (DL and DLE), a low-price car with the same framework but

fewer features and luxuries, aimed at cab and contract transport business fleets. Very popular among

    transport business people.[10]

Originally offered with 1.4L petrol and diesel engines, a turbocharged diesel engine was introduced in October

2005; a 1.2L petrol engine in November 2006 and a DiCOR (Direct Injection Common Rail) diesel version of

Indica V2 was launched in January 2008. It features 16 valves, double overheadcamshafts, a variable

geometryturbochargerand an intercooler. The top end GLG, GLX, DLG, DLX versions and the turbo and

DiCOR diesel engines, as well as the 1.4L petrol engines have been phased out with the introduction of the

next generation Indica Vista. The turbocharged engine was reintroduced in August 2010 as the turbomax in the

DLE and DLS Trim levels in metros where BS IV norms were introduced.[11]Later in March 2011, the Indica

eV2 was launched with a 'CR4' engine similar to the earlier DiCor engine with features like Auto-Drive Assist

and Clutch-To-Start and claims a class leading ARAI mileage of 25kmpl[12]

Acompressed natural gas(CNG) was launched in 2001.[13]It is offered as an option through OEM Bedini kits

offered by Shrimanker Gas Services India on the Indica V2 XETA.[14]

Faced with numerous CNG-related complaints, TATA organized a systematic recall and retrofit of Bedini

equipment which included a new improved Lamda sensor / electronic control unit, Bedini emulator and new

wiring harness approved and tested by both TATA and ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) from

2831 May 2007. With the new system, TATA aims to improve gas delivery and performance.[citation needed]

Hence I conducted a study on the consumer perception about small

Later I went through the process of filling the questionnaires, to know

exactly what the customers of small cars perceived about their cars.

All the cars taken for the sample showed that the consumers perceivedthem as almost same in all the attributes like safety, comfort and

We were born as a government company, with Suzuki as a minor partner, to make a people's car

for middle class India. Over the years, our product range has widened, ownership has changed

hands and the customer has evolved. What remains unchanged, then and now, is our mission to

motorise India. Our parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation, has been a global leader in

mini and compact cars for three decades. Suzuki's technical superiority lies in its ability to pack

power and performance into a compact, lightweight engine that is clean and fuel efficient. The

same characteristics make our cars extremely relevant to Indian customers and Indian

conditions. Product quality, safety and cost consciousness are embedded into our manufacturing

process, which we have inherited from our parent company.

Right from inception, Maruti brought to India, a very simple yet powerful Japanese philosophy

'smaller, fewer, lighter, shorter and neater'

From the Japanese work culture we imbibed simple practices like an open office, a common

uniform and common canteen for everyone from the Managing Director to the workman, daily

morning exercise, and quality circle teams.

In these competitive times the challenge is to keep inventing newer ways of doing things to keep

the customers in your fold. Over the last few years, the company strengthened the existing

practices and experimented with many new initiatives by way of kaizens (continuous
