Reverse Engraving  

Reverse Engraving is very similar to first surface engraving.  The main difference between the two styles 

is Reverse Engraving refers to the process of engraving the reverse or back of the material.  This style of 

engraving will leave the front, or finished side of the material smooth, and the engraving will allow for 

viewing completely through the material. 

 

This technique is often used with acrylic material but not limited to it.  A 2‐ply material with a thick clear 

surface and thin colored layer on the back is also very common.  Regardless of the material, ensuring 

that the engraving tool is sharp is essential in order to eliminate extra clean up time and a clean cut.  A 

ball‐nose cutter works well with a single line font when engraving text and creates a 3‐D appearance. 

 

 

In the Vision Software, after setting up the plate with the desired text and/or graphic: 

Select the text and/or graphic to be reverse engraved 

Select the Layout drop down menu 

Select the Size/Move submenu  

Select the Mirror submenu 

Select the Horizontal option to flip or reverse the selected data 

  

An alternate method, using icons from the menu bar: 

Select the text and/or graphic to be reverse engraved 

Click on the Horizontal Mirror icon in the menu bar to flip or reverse the selected data 

 

                                           

 

The Horizontal Mirror function is also available in the Cut Toolbox after selecting the Engrave Icon. 

 

  

 

Once the text is positioned properly, the job is ready to send to the engraver. 

  

  

NOTE:  The engraving will be accomplished on the reverse or back of the material.  It is a good idea to 

leave any protective covering on the top or front of the material as to remove the possibility of 

scratching the surface during placement for the engraving process. 

 

Review the manufacturer material specifications for identification of the proper engraving depth 

(usually .010” ‐ .015” for characters up to .25” high) to achieve the desired effect. 

 

To elevate the finished product, color filling is frequently used.  This will add a contrast to the engraving 

and offers a custom effect to most products.  Spray painting works well on a reverse engraved project.  

A little prep work goes a long way when using spray paint.   

Ensure to mask off the area to be painted 

Apply the spray paint to the masked area 

o Make sure to apply the paint in a thin layer 

o Utilize multiple angles to ensure proper coverage 

Remove the masking 

If multiple colors are desired, repeat the above steps until the desired result is achieved
