TECHNOLOGY PLAN 2014 Mission and Vision and Instructional Plan- Teachers

Whittier Christian High School has implemented a 1:1 BYOD iPad program to increase student engagement, equip our students for higher performance at colleges and universities, and move on to better careers. Teachers use iPads to foster these 6 skills in students:

1. Creativity and Innovation 2. Research and Information Fluency 3. Digital Citizenship 4. Communication and Collaboration 5. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making 6. Technology Operations and Concepts

Why iPads? Through extensive research of digital devices, we have concluded that the iPad is the best and most comprehensive device for 1:1 education at WCHS. The iPad is the clear choice for a number of reasons, which include the following: ● The iPad is more reliable than other tablets and has a 9-hour battery life. ● Teachers can provide a unified set of instructions for iPad use. ● Apple has embraced the education market, providing creative solutions to meet the needs of teachers

and students. Apple is the market leader for educational apps and textbooks. 1 ● Using classroom Apple TVs, students can use AirPlay to wirelessly share their work instantaneously,

and teachers can project their content for all students to see and experience. 2 ● The Apple App Store has a stringent vetting process for apps, ensuring safety, security, and reliability. 3 ● The iPad works with both Macs and PCs, ensuring seamless integration with whatever computers

students What will the benefits of a 1:1 iPad program be? WCHS is excited about the positive educational benefits that come from moving to a 1:1 iPad learning environment. Some of these benefits include the following: ● Colleges and Universities: Because 99% of our graduates attend colleges or universities, our students

must be to thrive in digital environments. Because their WCHS experience will include training in submitting homework online, posting meaningful contributions on discussion boards, appropriately using devices in class, and possessing the self-discipline and digital skills needed to succeed in hybrid and online classes.

● Career: In the professional world, businesses increasingly rely upon online education for training and professional development. Most initial on-the-job experiences will require students to be able to immediately demonstrate the ability to learn through a hybrid or online model. 4

● Increased Student Engagement: Research supports that, when done properly, access to technology benefits student learning. One research study that spanned 1:1 programs in six different states showed that teachers and students agreed 1:1 programs increased student engagement. Students reported that it was easier to do school work and that a computing device helped increase their interest in learning. 5

The teacher directs students in the conventional use of technology tools for learning activities that are sometimes related to the students or issues beyond the instructional setting. The setting includes access to information about community and world events and primary source materials.

Students have opportunities to select and modify technology tools to solve problems based on real-world issues.

Students select appropriate technology tools to complete authentic tasks across disciplines

By means of technology tools, students participate in outside-of-school projects and problem solving activities that have meaning for the students and the community.

Hardware plan: (BYOD iPads) Whittier Christian High School encourages incoming students to purchase the newest release of the iPad for optimal use. As a Bring Your Own Device School, we are requiring a minimum of the iPad 3 as of the 2014-2015 school year to ensure that freshman will have a useable device by the time they are seniors. Each year, we will eliminate an older model of the iPad from our eligible devices list. We have found that the vast majority of our students currently have the newest version of the iPad.
