The prototype made its maiden flight on July 27, 1972. Use of futuristic "space age" materials such as composites and titanium alloys made the new fighter lighter than the F-4, even though the airframe was much larger than the older aircraft. With its powerful engines, cutting edge fire control system, superior maneuverability and overall combat effectiveness, the new fighter soon became the pride of the USAF. Initial production runs of single-seater "A" and double-seater "B" models of the newly christened F-15 Eagle commenced simultaneously. When total F-15 production had reached 445 aircraft, subsequent production of single and double-seaters were redesignated the "C" and "D" models, respectively. Low-drag aerodynamically engineered "conformal tanks" on either side of the lower fuselage give the model a larger fuel capacity and thus significant boost in operational range over other Eagle models. The tanks are also fitted with six weapons stations, which increasing the ordnance the Strike Eagle can use in its ground attack role, a mission further augmented by an improved fire control system that also upgrades the aircraft's air-to-air capability. The F-15E is also fitted with the LANTIRN system. Using infrared light, the LANTIRN system greatly improves the F-15E's night navigation and target acquisition with an HUD (heads up display) that can render a night landscape as bright and fully visible as it would in daylight. The F-15 Eagle was said to be the finest air superiority fighter in the United States Air Force. In December 1969, McDonnell Douglas secured the USAF contract for the "F-X" project to develop the next generation successor fighter to the F-4 Phantom II. Utilizing spare space in the F-15A's airframe, the new "C" single seater was fitted with a larger onboard fuel tank, a modification that naturally resulted in higher takeoff weight. The F-15E Strike Eagle is designed for special ground attack capabilities. The F-15E Dual Role Fighter is basically an F-15 Eagle with upgraded ground attack capabilities. In addition to its mission role

in long range ground attack, its second but no less important mission is its traditional role as air superiority fighter.
