Brewing in Westerham can be traced back to the early 1600s and by the mid 1800s there were two breweries in the town, the Swan Brewery and the Black Eagle Brewery. It is the moderately hard greensand aquifer water that made Westerham famous for its pale bitter beers such as India Pale Ale.
By 1899 the Black Eagle Brewery had taken over many other breweries nearby. During the Second World War ales from Westerham were popular with young airmen stationed at nearby RAF Biggin Hill. Indeed following the D-Day landings in June 1944 Westerham Ales racked its beer into the auxiliary fuel tanks of Spitfires and these were flown to our troops in Normandy - the RAF’s version of the Brewer’s Dray.
Following the war Taylor Walker Brewery of Limehouse in London took over the Black Eagle Brewery and by the late 1950s most of the bitter beer for the London market was being brewed in Westerham. When Taylor Walker was itself taken over by Ind Coope, the brewery in Westerham was closed in 1965 bringing to an end nearly 400 years of brewing history.
The new Westerham Brewery was founded in 2004, proudly restoring brewing to this historic town. Using the same greensand aquifer water, the original heritage yeasts of the Black Eagle Brewery and producing many of the same styles of beers, Westerham Brewery is recreating the beers that made Westerham famous.
Our water is drawn from a greensand aquifer below Westerham. The water has made Westerham a brewing centre for over
400 years.
We source the finest English malting barley. Freshly milled every day it is the backbone
of our craft beers.
More than 90% of our hops are sourced from Kent hop gardens. We know the farmers and
we support them. Only the Best of Kent.
We ferment our beers with a multi-strain hertiage yeast. According to the National
Collection of Yeast Cultures it makes ‘Very excellent tasting beer’. We agree.
