While many students are relaxing for their summer break, four local kids volunteered to help with the Rotary project “Little Dresses for Africa”. Avon Lake Sewing teach-er, Nancy Erdman, (Sewing with Mrs. E) gave her sewing class the opportunity. “Right away they were enthusiastic and ready to help,” said Nancy. Olivia Davis, and Carolyn Kraus from Avon Lake, Mia Russell from Bay Village and Mackenzie Molnar from Amherst are sewing several dresses each during class and in their spare time. The Rotary thanks these girls and other local volun-teers who have donated completed dresses and new/used pillow cases and accessories like ribbons, lace, buttons and more. The simple dresses are made from pillowcases and
distributed to orphanages, churches and schools in Africa, Trinidad, as well as Honduras, Haiti, Mexico, the Philip-pines, Guatemala, and in the U.S. when needed. Earlier this summer, the Avon /Avon Lake - Sheffield/Sheffield Lake Rotary Club became involved with this inter-national project. Recognizing a need for clothing for boys the Rotary will also take on a similar initiative of “Britches for Boys”. Please call (440) 653-0118 for further information. For those interested in joining Rotary, check out www.avonavonlakerotary.org. The group meets at 7:30 a.m. ev-ery Tuesday at Towne Center Community Campus, 500 Community Drive in Avon Lake.

In the two years that The Second Look consigned furniture store has been open in Westlake’s Williamsburg Square, customers have discovered great buys in every area of
value, quality and price. Success for owners Sally Nagele and Jon Schurmeier means growth for The Second Look. The shop is moving to much larger quarters within Williamsburg Square, jump-ing from a 2200 square foot location to the 5400 square foot locale that was once an Edu-cator’s store. “We believe this is the now the largest purchase consignment store in the Cleveland area,” reports Jon. The store motto, “Not a thrift store, but a store for the thrifty,” captures the spirit of The Second Look. You will find artwork, lamps, chairs, up-holstered pieces, tables, mirrors, and hun-dreds of display pieces. TSL is an upscale consignment shop. Items are either gently used or never-been-used floor samples as well as brand new works from well known artists. The expansion allows more of the eclec-
tic, high quality consigned furniture shoppers want. “Reuse is good for the sell-er, it’s good for the buyer, and it’s really great for the planet,” says Sally. “If it’s not becoming to you, it should be coming to us!” Re-upholstery is a tre-mendous option for the cus-tomer who may like the look or style of certain furniture but may require re-uphol-stering to fit their décor. “We offer a wide range of quality fabrics if you see something you like,” says Sally. With 30-60-90 day price points, buyers can also wait it out for even better buys on consigned inventory. The store is open Tuesday-Saturday. (440) 835-1975.

The Bay Village Foundation is getting ready to cel-ebrate twenty years of public service to the community of Bay Village and is changing its name in the process, from The Village Foundation to the Bay Village Foundation. The Board of Trustees of the foundation voted to modify its name to broaden the recognition that the foun-dation is THE Bay Village foundation.
This is the second name change for the group that T. Richard Martin founded in
1995 as Play In Bay. Its purpose was to have one community fund to be used for contributions for volunteer proj-ects. The name was changed to The Village Foundation in 1997 at which time it also became a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation. Charter members donated the start up funds.
According to Board President, Eileen Vernon, “After slow but steady
growth, we faced two issues that afflict many smaller and medium-sized foundations. “First, we found that name recognition was a challenge. For example, many people were con-fusing The Village Foundation with The Village Project. “Secondly, we had a growing sense that there was a disconnect between what the Foundation was doing as it moved forward. The Foundation went from helping very small community programs to becoming a community coor-dinator and fundraiser for larger community wide projects such as the Bay Fireworks Fund, thereby giving the Foundation a broader vision as a service group.

Have you ever thought that spending 3 hours a week for 12 weeks at the police station would be both an enjoy-able and educational experience? Well, if you ask any one of the over 300 graduates of the “Community Police Academy”, they would tell you it was indeed both, and much more! The Westlake Police Department is again hosting the “Community Police Academy” and is currently accepting applications for what will be the 20th session. The Acad-emy meets for 12 weeks, every Wednesday beginning on September 3. Participants will have opportunity to see how their Po-lice Department runs and what the Officers are trained to do. They will get hands on experience in crime scene processing,
Westlake Community Police Academyself-defense, & firearms instruction. Other topics include K-9 operations, S.W.A.T., O.V.I. apprehension, law enforcement technology and detective bureau investigations. Those wishing to attend must be at least 21 years old and have no criminal record. Preference will be given to those applicants that live or work in Westlake. Class size is limited to 20 students. The academy is designed with the intent of solidifying the partnership be-tween the Community and the Police Department through education and understanding. The academy is NOT de-signed to assist those seeking to pursue a career in law en-forcement. Applications can be picked up at the Westlake Police
Department, 27300 Hilliard Blvd. or on line at the City of Westlake web site under police programs. For further in-formation, please contact the Westlake Police Department, (440) 871-3311, Lt. William Eschenfelder (ext 246), Sgt. Mark Krumheuer (ext 253) or Sgt. Gerry Vogel (ext 241).
