Royal Alexandra Hospital and Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital Fonds Dates of Creation: 1909‐1999 Extent: 15.6 m of textual records and other materials Administrative History ‐ The Royal Alexandra Hospital: The Royal Alexandra Hospital opened its doors in December 1900 as the Edmonton General Hospital. The Building was located on 97th Street and 103A Avenue (Boyle and Namao), and was designed to accommodate 25 patients. The cost of the opening of the hospital was provided by the Women’s Auxiliary. The Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing opened in 1905 under the administration of the Edmonton General Hospital. In 1910 the hospital was officially renamed the Royal Alexandra Hospital in honour of Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, mother of King George V. In 1911 the need for better facilities led to the opening of a “fully modern” hospital, on 111th Avenue between 101st and 103rd Streets. Built for a city of 31,000, the new hospital had a bed capacity of 150. In 1922 plans were drawn for the isolation hospital which was constructed directly behind the Royal Alexandra Hospital, and provided another 100 beds. The urge for a new wing intensified in 1927, and finally the west wing was built in the 1930’s. In 1948 an Annex was built west of the Isolation Hospital, which was later acquired by the Alberta Government and renamed the Glenrose Provincial Hospital. The Annex continued as a chronic hospital, though its name was changed to the Norwood Auxiliary Hospital. Other improvements to the Royal Alexandra Hospital include the completion of the 113 bed Maternity Pavilion in 1953, the construction of a Cafeteria building in March 1958, as well as the 300‐bed extension for the Nurses Residence, which officially opened on June 10, 1960. In 1959 construction of a new complex for the Royal Alex began. The new building was erected across from the then site of the Royal Alexandra Hospital on Kingsway Avenue, and 102nd Street. The new complex cost approximately $9,000,000, and was to have a capacity of 600 beds. Upon competition in 1963, patients were transported to the new complex through an underground tunnel which connected the two facilities. The old Royal Alexandra building became a multipurpose medical complex, and a mental retardation institute. In 1963 the 500‐bed Active Treatment Pavilion was opened. In 1967 the Children’s Pavilion was established, with Her Royal Highness, Princess Alexandra cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremonies. The Children’s Pavilion linked the Active Treatment Pavilion with the Women’s (Maternity) Pavilion. As of 1969, the Royal Alexandra had a bed capacity of 924. The new Emergency Centre was opened in 1993, followed by the Diagnostic Treatment Centre, which housed the Intensive Care Unit, and the Coronary Care Unit. The School of Nursing officially closed on March 29, 1996. As of October 2000, the Royal Alexandra has 570 beds, treats about 350,000 patients each year, deliver 4,300 babies as well as run 176,000 diagnostic tests. The Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital: The Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital was founded in 1945. The Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital was originally housed within the Edmonton


Military Hospital, also known as the Jesuit College Hospital, established by the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, which would become surplus after the end of WWII. Through the efforts of Dr. Percy Moore, Director of Indian Health Services, Dept of National Health and Welfare, the Edmonton Military Hospital was transferred to Indian Health Services for the treatment of Native and Eskimos with Tuberculosis. In 1946 the hospital was renamed the Charles Camsell Indian Hospital. In 1955 the Charles Camsell became responsible for the medical services for all the population of the N.W.T., Natives and Inuit. On October 10, 1967 the new hospital was officially opened, and renamed as The Charles Camsell Hospital. In 1988 the hospital was transferred to the province and was renamed once again, as the Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital. The Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital officially merged with The Royal Alexandra Hospital on January 1 1993. The last emergency room patient was treated on March 9, 1994. Two years later, the Charles Camsell Provincial General Hospital officially closed on March 31, 1996.
