You’ll find Anne Alexander’s sculpture in both galleries and exterior exhibits throughout the US. She received grants from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation and a Fulbright to study indigenous cultures in the Dominican Republic. She creates small hand-held forms to large human-size works. The imagery she uses relates to nature and human life’s most organic form, derived from primitive animal, sea life, plant pod, shell forms and the human body.

“As an artist, I strive to cause the viewer to become more aware of his/her body, size, and surrounding space as well as to enhance one’s connection to the natural world.” Anne

Harry started painting watercolors 12 years ago, after retiring from a long career as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and (briefly) as a pediatrician. Despite his keen interest in art history and art collecting, he has no formal training in studio arts. His vibrant and whimsical style emerged from his clinical experiences, playful personality, and fascination with color as an expression of emotional states.

“I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find a way to explain or describe my creative experience. Most of the time I am surprised by the finished product, not knowing when I start what will happen. I hope that these works bring a smile to your face.” Harry

The Maine wilderness inspires Michael Boardman to create watercolor landscape and wildlife paintings. His work hangs in galleries in Maine and is often used to raise funds for wildlife and conservation organizations. He was awarded artist residencies at Baxter Sate Park and Acadia National Park in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

“I have a natural affinity for the wild, whether its moss covered forest, granite islands or weathered mountains of stone. The abstract qualities of nature portray places where imagination can roam, but is anchored in the history of what came before; erosion, water, root, rock and wind. Painting creates moments where you feel your existence crossing paths with these objects and their histories.” Michael

John Bowdren paints in oils, acrylics, watercolor and woodblock prints. He sculpts in wood and metal. He is a graduate from the School of Visual Arts in NY.

“The sun on the coast, lighting up a wharf or boat, highlighting a treetop as the sun sets, the way light can show a new and interesting composition or fuse color and atmosphere into a scene that clicks and something goes “Aha, that would make a good painting” are the reasons I paint and the Maine coast offers so many places to explore and be surprised by.” John

Catherine BreerCatherine Breer studied painting at the Atlanta

College of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has exhibited widely throughout New England, including a show in 2005 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her work is vibrant, colorful and full of life.

“Life speeds by like the blur out of a car window. Children grow, seasons change, love is lost and renewed again. I want to capture the ordinary moments of life. For it is in these ordinary moments, for a fleeting second, that the extraordinary suddenly appears. I want to see them, capture them and keep them in my heart.” Catherine

Michele CaronMichele A. Caron is a recipient of a National

Endowment for the Arts grant for her work in the field of fine art, objects and gilded frames. As a painter, she brings many of the disciplines’ finer qualities to her paintings.

Michele’s current body of work is an exploration of repetitive structure and geometry in pigment-rich industrial enamels and the introduction of gold leaf. Her work is a progression of drawing techniques with an underlining influence of commercial graphics, show card lettering and automotive pin striping.

“Beauty in composition, beauty in material usage and beauty in tension.” Michele

David CostelloDavid Costello studied at the San Francisco

Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Academy and the Carmel Art Institute. He exhibited in Europe and the U.S. winning numerous awards. He works primarily in soft pastel. He is a member of the 5 River Arts Alliance and the Pastel Society of America.

“While some of my inspiration comes from the world around us, the majority comes from within. My work flows out of time spent in stillness and silence. My focus is the longing of the human heart and my passion is to give voice to what cannot be said in words – to reveal what cannot be seen with the eye, but the heart.” David

Sukie CurtisSukie Curtis’ brightly-colored, playful paintings

exude a joyful energy as they celebrate her delight in familiar, everyday things: radishes, pears and peaches. Sukie paints in oil and lives in Cumberland, Maine.

“ ‘Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.’ These words by Mary Oliver are a good description of my approach to painting. I begin with delight in the colors, shapes and patterns of fruits, vegetables, clouds, and flowers, and in paint! Each painting is a small adventure, a process of exploration and discovery, openness to “happy accidents” and new ways of celebrating life in paint.” Sukie

Bob DelaneyBuilding on a four-year degree in graphic

design, Bob Delaney has been passionate about photography since the early 1980s. With a love for old cameras, Bob continues to shoot film as well as digital and concentrates primarily on landscapes, seascapes, and nature subjects.

“My goal when photographing is not only to capture whatever is beautiful or interesting about my subject, but to hopefully bring something unique to the image. While I enjoy photographing popular landmarks such as lighthouses, I try to seek out the everyday scenes we overlook or the hidden treasures few of us have found.” Bob

Award-winning artist Suzanne deLesseps is passionate about painting the landscape in pastels and oils. She travels in Maine and the western U.S. as well as in France and Italy.

“As an artist, my work is always evolving and changing as I set new goals and discover new ways to interpret the landscape. I paint en plein air as often as possible to gather the information that later serves as inspiration for more intuitive painting and experimentation in the studio. Here the actual process of painting becomes the main objective. The outcome is unknown and that’s what makes it exciting!” Suzanne

Lisa DombekLisa Dombek has earned special recognition for

her deeply passionate works in texture and mark making. She has traveled and exhibited in exclusive fine art galleries in major cities across the U.S. Her work has been selected for publication in national literary and visual art publications. She is a listed American Artist with the ARS/NY.

“I tend to work from the inside out. Working in Series appeals to me as it allows the development of an idea, whether visual, conceptual or spiritual. In terms of process, I work abstractly and intuitively, allowing my conscious/unconscious expression, letting the voices speak.” Lisa

14

kdb-Karen Dominguezkdb–Karen Dominguez has exhibited in fine

art galleries all along the east coast. She works in oil and acrylic as well as photography, assemblage and encaustic. Her colorful, powerful yet inviting imagery is equally impressive within her small or large scale works.

“I am inspired by the natural world. The shapes, patterns, colors and forms have been making their way into my artist endeavors in many different mediums. Often times it is a fusing of these mediums that are incorporated into a finished piece. Studying nature and creating a visual narrative is the magic that fills my dream world, day and night.” Karen

Judine FrenchJudine French is a self-taught artist who came

to painting watercolors after a successful career as a professional interior house painter. She now creatively utilizes her bold color sense to render works of art on paper. She exhibits in fine art galleries all along the coast of Maine.

“I love the medium of watercolor. It allows me to reach the artist within. Using the entire palette, I attempt to capture and express the beauty around me. Nature through my eyes is very colorful and joyous.” Judine

16

Rick GreenRick’s passion is driven by his desire to paint

subjects with encaustics which he considers both abstract and quite realistic at the same time. Being a pilot, he views this large and varied world from above. Rick has been painting for over 30 years. He exhibits locally and nationally and teaches encaustic painting.

“When looking down, the definitions of perspective dissolve, leaving complex and beautiful patterns which defy identification. Is it the edge of a small tidal pool or miles of coastline? Is it a small inlet or a large delta? The answer to all of these questions of course, is always – yes.” Rick

William Hallett’s earliest memories are of his childhood years growing up in Mexico City. The unforgettable vivid, intense colors and exotic atmosphere now come boldly through on his canvas. Being awed by the old masters in Europe as a young man inspired him, but, the final impetus came from his father-in-law Peter Geist’s encouragements here in Maine on Matinicus Island. Now you’ll find Williams work in many fine art galleries along the east coast.

“Color stimulates me the most. I see infinite possibilities between shadow and light creating a particular mood and atmosphere that play on the landscape and architecture of Maine.” William

Sue HammerlandSue was born and raised in the San Francisco

Bay Area. She attended undergraduate and graduate schools in Virginia where she studied art history, painting and printmaking. She continues to happily paint and make things from welding steel sculptures to crocheting sea creatures and all things in between.

“My work is about a visual celebration of organic forms. I get very excited about colors, shapes, lines and creating imagery that come out of my imagination but are rooted in a study of nature. I reflect on ideas of transformation and mutation in some of my work, and contemplate how nature can survive, thrive, rebel or mutate in reaction to our human-centric intrusions and manipulations.” Sue

Her work includes landscapes of her favorite coastal haunts in Maine, travel destinations elsewhere in the U.S. and Europe, and paintings of still life and figure subjects.

“For me painting is largely about nature and the ways to enjoy it. Sailing, cooking native specialties, and hiking on the beach all inspire me. Painting en plein air is my way of getting to know a new place. Traveling in New England and Europe are inspiring.” Bobbi

Diana JohnsonThe focus of Diana’s work is the Maine

landscape. Her first impression of a scene becomes a lasting impression when she paints it.

“To gaze upon one of Diana Johnson’s paintings is to travel through space and time to a place you may once have been or may yet to go, creating a longing for a certain feeling or ethereal quality that experience tells us is good.” — James Peak, Portland Press Herald 8/6/13

Diana Johnson has received numerous awards for her paintings. She offers art classes in Yarmouth, Freeport, and Cumberland.

“The beauty that surrounds us here is magical. Painting is my way to share what I notice about the world we live in.” Diana

Anne MacleodCelebrated pastel artist Anne Macleod started

her career out of a four-year program at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She is an award-winning pastel painter throughout the U.S. and travels abroad to capture the essence of French impressions in Provence and beyond.

“As a realistic landscape and still-life painter, I thoroughly enjoy painting en plein air in the summertime and in studio during the colder months. I love how pastels are very forgiving. This allows me the opportunity to discover and create the balance between light and dark, form and texture.” Anne

Gayl McNallyGayl McNally thinks of the world as one large

gallery to explore and discover new inspiration. Her extensive travels from the Islands of Maine to New York, Ireland and Mexico have greatly influenced her work. She works in watercolor, acrylic and encaustic.

“I make art because I love to. Observation is my tool as I reach for the possibilities. I like to abstract out the idea surprising myself with the essence! It is magic to share with others.” Gayl

Maine College of Art and an MFA in Visual Arts from Vermont College. Her work has been show in museums and galleries throughout Maine and New England.

“Since early childhood I have been drawn to repetitive graphic imagery and to the intrigue of maps and geography. In this body of work I am using bird images, idiosyncratic “mapmaking symbols,” and landscape metaphorically to explore the relationship between our knowledge of place and interior spaces of the psyche.” Liz

“Painting is a way for me to preserve those places and subjects that I am drawn to. When I was a young child my father, an avid naturalist, taught me to observe and take in the beauty and sensory images that abound. I seek to capture and share my impressions of the forms, colors and light as I have seen and experienced it.” Lois
