Ferdinand von Wright
Ferdinand von Wright (March 19, 1822 — July 31, 1906) was aFinnish painter. He is known especially for his paintings of birds andlandscapes, but was also a portrait painter.Von Wright's parents, Henrik Magnus von Wright and Maria ElisabetTuderus, owned the Haminalahti manor in Kuopio. His brothersMagnus and Wilhelm were also painters.In 1838, Ferdinand traveled to Sweden to assist his brother Wilhelmin his illustration work, and worked as his brother's substitute as anillustrator at the Royal Swedish Academy of Art. During 1842 hestudied for some time at the academy, and then returned to Finland in1844. He lived a secluded but productive life in a cottage he built nearhis family's home. In 1885, he was granted an artist's pension by thegovernment. Despite suffering paralysis beginning in 1884, Ferdinandcontinued to produce artistic works until his death. It was during thistime that he produced his work The Fighting Capercaillies, one ofFinland's most famous paintings.

Simberg's famous painting THE WOUNDED ANGEL is somewhat gloomy, its titular character appearing in the shape of a winged angel with a bandaged head, borne on a stretcher by two somberly dressed boys, one of whom looks toward the viewer with a serious expression.
The painting is the best known of the artist's works and is especially famous in Finland.
Simberg painted The wounded angel at Tampere Cathedral as the wallpainting years 1905-1906.
