VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

A letter from MELODY HAWORTH...Dear Sunrise Rotary Club,fl^ijour! Everything has been simply terrific here in Belgium. I arrived safelyt , was met by my first host family Chez Culots, There were 4 childrenranging in age from 6-12. It was a terrific start -1 felt right at home from thevery start and I was lucky enough to have 6 personal tutors! After 2 weeks Ichanged to my "real" family, Chez Descamps. I say "real" because I onlystayed with the Culots because my family was on vacation when I arrived. Iwas a little sad to leave my first family so soon - but they only live 6 km awayso I'm able to visit often. The first weekend in Belgium, I went to Normandiewith the Culots. It was absolutely breath taking! The lighting was gorgeous.Pierre - my counselor and temporary host father - told me that manyimpressionists, like Monet, painted in Normandie often. Belgium is also a verybeautiful country. The countryside is very green and there are many trees. Itrains often, but I don't mind, it's been simply terrific the rain and all. I'mforgetting English though, that's a serious problem. I'm surprised that manypeople don't speak English. But I am very content with this. My family nownever speaks a word of English with me. It has been a great learningexperience thus far. School has also been terrific. I am taking Biology,Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, French, English, Math (whichl—'udes Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Trigonometry), Religion,-™.nputers, and Gym. It has been hard to fully understand each subject butI've been receiving alot of help from my fellow classmates. The school systemis alot different than the states. There is a new schedule each day and eachsubject requires a different amount of hours. Every week we have the sameschedule as the week before. I really enjoy this school. There are around 500students and the ages range from 8 yrs until 18 yrs. After each year there is anexam which the students take in order to move onto a higher grade. I am in 5erne and 6 erne (in California it is like being a jr and sr). I prefer the twogrades, I am able to meet more people and have different teachers. I have beento four Rotary meetings. The Rotary Club here is similar to the Sunrise club,minus the women. In Belgium, the club is solely for men. They are veryfriendly and each meeting I attended I have felt extremely welcome. ThisSaturday is the first "get together" with all the students (excuse me, the second,the first was about two weeks ago, as an introduction luncheon), down theLesse River. I am very excited. I will write you all (hopefully) each month tokeep you up to date on what's going on over here. PS. I can't believe I've beenhere a month. Time is really going by too fast!

-- IN MEMORY --

Please keep a special prayer and good thoughts for our friend andfellow Rotarian John Watson in his time of sorrow. Wanda Watson,John's wife, passed away on September29, 1992. She will be placed torest in Arkansas. There will be a memorial service in Santa Rosa in thenear future, (date/time unknown at this time)

VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH

LETTER HOME... 28-10-92

Dear Sunrise Rotary Club;

Bonjour toute le monde! Comment allez-vous? Je suis tres bien!Merci pour la lettre, j'aime lire les choses qui ce passe avec vous.Everything is going smoothly on this side of the world. I go to Rotarymeetings every other week. If I haven't said before, we meet everyMonday for a lunch meeting in Dour. About 5 minutes fromQuievrain, where I'm living. My host family here is fantastic! I livein an apartment above their restaurant. The restaurant is called "LaBourse" which is translated "Wallstreet". I'm taking dance classes,ballet and jazz in Mons, a town about 15 minutes away. I'm alsotaking Karate. My host father plays squash at the same building wherethe activities are, so it's very convenient. Everyone is extremely niceand I have met a lot of terrific people. My Rotary club's Rotex had atrip that I participated in which was in Houyet. We all took kayaksdown the Lesse river. It was fantastic! I got a cold after, but it was

*" olutely worth it! It was a beautiful day and the countryside wasvery fairy tale like. Belgium is a gorgeous country. They experienceall the seasons. Right now the leaves are all changing colors to redsand yellows. It has been very cold around 0 C and -5 C. I'm gettingused to it, but I hear it will get a lot colder this winter. It willprobably be a colder year this year than the past two years. Maybethere will be a lot of snow! I hope so. I'll be sure to send pictures andlet you all know! My french is coming along pretty well. Everythinghas been better and more exciting than I had ever expected. Thankyou all for making this possible. I'm enjoying every minute! There isonly one bad thing to report - it's going by too fast! I've been here 2months already! Happy Halloween! Please keep in touch.Melody(TRANSLATION: Hello everybody! How are you all doing? I'mdoing very well. Thank you for the letter. I like to read the things that

Khappening with you.)
