First United Methodist Church Name Tag Distribution Sunday, August 11 and
Sunday, August 18
As part of the Evangelism Committee’s commitment to always encourage hospitality, we’re making name tags for all the adults in the congregation.
Having name tags is also part of our commitment to become a certified ”Welcoming Congregation of the United Methodist Church”.
On August 11th and 18th, the Evangelism Committee will have tables set up in the church lobby for you to stop by and pick up your name tag.
We are asking that everyone be responsible for their own name tag. The Evangelism committee hopes that each of you will wear your name tag to all church events to help us get to know one another better.

Rev. Dr. John Kilzerby Dan Camp
I first met John Kilzer when we enrolled together as second-career pastors/students at Memphis Theological Seminary. That's been about seventeen years ago now. By then, we both had considerable life experiences behind us to help inform our studies. We weren't enrolling because someone told us we should or ought. We were there because our long, sometimes "meandering" faith journeys with God had brought us there. Of all the life stories I heard, none captured my attention quite so much as that of John Kilzer's. I knew he was a native of Jackson, Tennessee. I knew he had played basketball. I did not know he had been twice nominated as All-State and once as All-American while playing at Jackson Central Merry High. He went on to letter four years at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). I've since learned he was elected to the Jackson Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. I knew he was a musician. I did not know that he had toured with the "Moody Blues," written lyrics with/for Roseanne Cash, Trace Adkins, Jimmy Davis and Dobie Gray. I had no idea that he had
worked (or would work with) James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Linda Rondstat and the Coen Brothers. John openly shares (then and now) his struggles with addiction. He began recovery in 2000 and now leads a recovery ministry at St. John's United Methodist Church in midtown Memphis where he serves under appointment as an elder with the Memphis Conference. Other facts about John include: Married to his lovely wife, Stacey for thirty years. Elected to the West Tennessee Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Former Adjunct Professor at Memphis Theological Seminary. PHD in English awarded from Middlesex University in London, England (2010).
What I did not realize until coming to Jackson First UMC is this: Jackson First is John Kilzer's church home. He grew up here. He has fond memories of so many things. I asked John recently what he remembered most from his growing up years here: • "I remember the catacomb tunnel that
ran underneath the church and how we would hide/explore in there. In fact, I've written about that in my song, "Resurrection Train."
• "I recall the low balcony rail in the
church and how it use to terrify me as a toddler (and still does)."
• "I remember Paul Rice's dad and how
he would occasionally sing solos with a magical, transcendent voice."
• "I remember how Mr. Bruce Cashon
would make paper golf balls from the Commercial Appeal before Sunday School and play with us boys."
Make plans now to be present. I've asked John if he would not only preach at this --his home church--but share his musical talents by singing one of his latest releases, "Soldiers" for us as we worship together. Let's warmly welcome this "hometown prophet" at the First Awakening Service (8:55 AM) and the Traditional Service (11 AM).

The Heat is On…Sound familiar? These lyrics to an 80’s disco song have real meaning as we watch our summer temperatures climb. Heat exhaustion can occur when you’ve been exposed to several days of heat and become dehydrated. Believe it or not this is easy to do. Our bodies are 75% water so, if we don’t make a conscious effort to replace the fluids we lose perspiring, dehydration sets in and can escalate to heat sickness.
There are two types of heat exhaustion-water and salt depletion. The symptoms of water depletion are excessive thirst, weakness, fainting, dark urine and headaches. Many times after sweating, a lot folks will complain of a headache blaming the heat when the culprit is actually dehydration.
Salt depletion heat exhaustion presents with the symptoms of muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting, and dizziness. Excessive sweating and muscle cramps go hand in hand.
Heat exhaustion isn’t as serious as heat stroke-but beware-it’s not to be taken lightly. We sweat to cool off our bodies- BUT- if we run out of fluids to make sweat, we can quickly overheat. High humidity (and its been very high lately) interferes with the evaporation of sweat. If untreated the exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, damaging vital organs, even causing death.
If one has symptoms of heat exhaustion immediately get them out of the heat into air-conditioning or a cool, shady spot. A cool shower or bath will lower body temperature, as well ice towels
and fans. Remove heavy clothing and drink Gatorade if you have it. Cool water will work, too. Gently massage muscle cramps until they relax-do not rub with alcohol.
If these measures don’t bring relief, seek help before heat stroke begins. These symptoms include dry, flushed skin (because you’ve run out of sweat), rapid, weak pulse, temperature over 102F, irrational behavior, and seizures. If the victim is unconscious, call 911 and cool them down as quickly as possible by applying cold water or ice under arms and to head.
Prevention of heat sickness is the best cure. The easiest thing you can do is stay hydrated by drinking 8 glasses of water per day. Drink sports drinks if you know you will be out in the heat. Check on your elderly neighbors during heat waves, they are more vulnerable to heat, as are children under 4. Avoid jumping into a hot car without cooling it off first. While parked in the sun the interior temp can get up to 110F.
Remember you’ll be more sensitive to heat after you’ve had a bout of heat exhaustion. Avoid heat and heavy exercise until your doctor feels it is safe.
July 15-20 is FUMC’s week to serve in RIFA’s
Soup Kitchen.

Walking in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul
Bishop Bill McAlilly will lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land Feb. 17-26, 2014.“Jerusalem, the Holy City! Since the earliest days of Christianity, pilgrims have made their way to this place. In 2014, we will follow in the ancient and venerated footsteps of these faithful Christians,” announced McAlilly, resident bishop for the Nashville Episcopal Area that includes the Memphis and Tennessee Conferences.
“As we travel together, we will worship and learn. We will visit the sites where Jesus walked, where he taught and prayed. We will discover the images that he used to illustrate His parables. We will come closer to understanding Him as we gain understanding of the world in which He conductedHis ministry,” said McAlilly.
McAlilly expressed hope that many will be able to accompany him on what he called a “spiritual pilgrimage.” He said the experience will “not be a commercial tour,” but a “true faith experience.”
For more info about the tour or to sign up, contact: Cecil or Tharon Kirk at 731-660-4354 or [email protected]
