Getting Better Acquainted With Our Members

by Bobbie Mays Director of Communications

2013 has been a year of great expectation and joy for Brian and Ashley Taylor! On March 2nd, they celebrated the birth of their first child, Jack Thurman Taylor. Discover other joys of this young couple as they have become involved with their church family at Jackson FUMC.

Both Brian and Ashley were born in Jackson, TN. Brian grew up in Malesus with his parents, Richard and Tina and younger sister, Virginia. While living there, he attended both Bemis & Malesus United Methodist Church. In 2000, Brian graduated from Southside High School, attended Lambuth University for a year, and then transferred to Jackson State Community College (JSCC) where he received an Associate Degree in Computer Networking in 2003. Starting as an intern in the Information Systems Department for the City of Jackson, Brian continued his education at night by attending Union University, where he earned a BS in Organizational Leadership. In his 10th year of employment with the

city of Jackson, currently, Brian is the Network Administrator of the Information Systems Department at City Hall. His responsibilities include overseeing technology associated with 911, the police and fire departments, community centers, and all other municipal entities.

Ashley was one of five children, born to Kevin and Linda Williams. She grew up with two older brothers, Orion and Josh, a younger brother, Matt, and a little sister, Lindsay. Her dad served in the military in the United States Air Force and following her birth, the family was transferred to Indiana. Six states and twenty moves later, she returned to Jackson in 1998 entering Jackson Central-Merry as a high school freshman. She attended school with David Hollis, (a student then, an associate pastor, now) recalling her early mornings at school beginning with “Prayer at the Pole” where David was a part of the group as well. Their paths also crossed at Chick-fil-A where they both worked part-time. Ashley graduated in 2002, went to JSCC for two years then transferred to University of Memphis, taking the rest of her course work to fulfill her education requirements for a BA in Elementary Education in 2006. She continued her education at Walden University earning an MA in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in 2008. For the past seven years, she has taught kindergarten or first grade for the Jackson Madison County School System. She is currently on maternity leave, and loving being a mom!

Brian and Ashley have been married for nine & a half years. How they met is a moment Ashley will never forget! While at the wedding of a friend, she remembers vividly going over to a table to visit the groom’s mother who was seated by a woman she had never met. Talking together about the beautiful wedding day, Ashley looked up to see this nice looking boy walk by and mentioned how cute he was and whether the groom’s mother knew him. The other lady quickly chimed in and said, “Yes, that’s my son, Brian!” A year later on September 6, 2003, Brian and Ashley were married!

Not long after they had married, they began looking for a church home. She had grown up as a Southern Baptist and Brian as a United Methodist, so they decided they would visit different churches and denominations before making their final decision. Brian had been to FUMC as one of about 100 youth attending a Chrysalis Flight, the youth version of The Walk to Emmaus. An interesting memory Brian had of FUMC was sleeping in the old unfinished basement on the concrete floor before the renovation took place which wasn’t too fun!

One Sunday as newlyweds, they finally decided they would try out Jackson First, and they came away really inspired by the sermon that Paul Clayton had preached that day. The next week they returned and shortly afterwards, they knew this was where they wanted to worship. In November of 2004, they joined FUMC. At that time, there wasn’t a Sunday School class for young couples and singles, but there were others like them who were interested in being a part of one. Pam Jaco, Director of Evangelism, contacted the Taylors about starting a new class and soon, “The Good Goats” Sunday School Class evolved! When asked about that name, Brian laughs heartily! One of the studies that had been suggested to the newly formed class was a book called, “The Good Goats” dealing with images of God. Needing to come up with a class name and with no one offering any ideas, Brian sarcastically suggested they become the “Good Goats” class. He later learned from classmates, J.V. Thompson, Taylor McCallum, Amanda Durbin, and a few others (after they got to know one another better) that they thought he was emotionally attached to the name and they were far too polite to hurt his feelings. By the time they realized Brian was being facetious, the name plate had already been fabricated.

Good Goats or not, the name resonates with many at Jackson FUMC! This group continues to grow spiritually, nurturing one another, supporting mission work, and caring for others as well as increasing its

Ashley, Jack, and Brian Taylor

First Edition May 8, 2013 page 7

membership. Ashley and Brian describe their Sunday School as their support group, “spiritually and emotionally.” The friends they enjoy on the weekends are the same friends they enjoy through their Sunday School class.

One of the projects initiated by the Good Goats class was “The College Care Package” to let FUMC’s college students know they are not forgotten. At Christmastime for exam week, shoeboxes are filled with goodies and items to encourage and lift up the students and then they’re mailed to each at their college campuses. Some other class projects they have enjoyed include work the Habitat Houses as well as Room in the Inn and RIFA’s Soup Kitchen. To keep the class connected and focused between Sundays, Brian sends out an e-mail about the next week’s Sunday School lesson with scripture passages, upcoming projects and gatherings as well as prayer requests.

When prayer requests are made, he passes those along to the class.

In addition to her Sunday School participation, Ashley’s church involvement has included serving on the Church Council, Staff Parish Committee, and as a Communion Steward. In 2010, a special highlight for her was serving as part of a mission team to New Orleans with a small group from FUMC. She and Brian have also enjoyed the Disciple Classes in which Brian has co-taught Disciple I with Ted Leach and Disciple III with Paul Clayton. Both readily acknowledge that while the studies are a commitment, they are well worth the time and discipline necessary to gain a greater understanding of the Bible and for being followers of Christ. Making commitments to take a Disciple class and in helping to lead has given them a different perspective. Not only has it broadened their Biblical knowledge, but it has expanded their friendships and relationships with others in the church, beyond their Sunday School class.

Brian, who obviously likes to learn, enjoys documentaries, writing a couple of times a week on his blog: exceptionalmediocrity.com, playing guitar for “fun and relaxation” and of course, being a dad. Through their passion for traveling and in practicing the principles of Dave Ramsey on money management, they have enjoyed adventures together that have taken them to various cities in FUMC’s State Fair, September 29, 2010, led by

Brian Taylor, Master of Ceremony

Ashley Taylor with Tharon Kirk, Mission Team - New Orleans Brian Taylor - Habitat for Humanity construction

the states as well as to London, England and surrounding areas. One of their more memorable trips though, was when they went to New York City. Taking the typical tourist excursions, Ashley was really anxious to see St. Patrick’s Cathedral. No sooner had they walked inside when Ashley turned to Brian and said, “That looks like some people from our church!” Exasperated, Brian replied, “Be realistic. What are the odds of running into fellow church members in a city of 8 million people when we never even run into them at Kroger?” Insistent, Ashley chased the group out the door and sure enough there was FUMC’s Sanctuary Choir! They, too, had been on a tour after having performed at Carnegie Hall that week!

Teaching is a part of their life. Mission work is another. This year, their world continues in a different and exciting new realm, as they are enjoying parenting their two month old baby boy, Jack. Providing even greater meaning and guidance to them each day as they raise their son, is their favorite scripture:

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Girls Just Want to Have Fun!The last thing a busy woman wants to hear is “complete physical exam.” Why would I need that when I feel fine; I’m afraid they might find something wrong with me; plus I don’t have time yada, yada, yada…? Many women feel they don’t need physicals because they have completed their families and don’t have to return to the doctor for yearly birth control prescriptions or menopause is behind them. In fact, yearly check-ups are our responsibility to maintain good health no matter our age.

A regular consultation with a doctor will allow them to get to know you and be familiar with your health issues. They can see if everything is developing normally; and, if there are problems deal with them earlier. Finally, the routine physical allows you to discuss plans for good health and safe living, including risk factors for certain disease processes.

FUMC’s own Drs. Molly Rheney and Ryan Roy, with their colleagues at the Women’s Clinic, have compiled a list of tests ladies should receive according to age, including a yearly, routine physical. Others include:• Blood pressure readings- At least every 1-2 years• Cholesterol Check- Every 3 years• Thyroid screening-Every 5 years if you are over 35.• Colon screenings-and YES this may MEAN a colonoscopy-50 &over• Bone Density- 65 and older, earlier if you have risk factors.• Hearing test-18-50 Every 10 years-- 51+ every 3 years• Breast Cancer Screenings- 20’s and 30’s yearly by clinical exam• Mammogram- yearly starting at 40, along with a clinical exam• Pelvic Exam- Yearly at 21, or earlier if necessary.• Pap Test- 21-65 yearly, or as deemed by your doctor

For a detailed list check their web site @ www.womansclinicpa.com

It doesn’t matter if you are a career girl, mom, grand mom, even great-grand, many people depend on the modern woman. You are a VIP to God and others…so take care of yourself, then go have some fun!! Your family will thank you for it!
