Youth Ministry Update 2.0by Jeff Rudy

Associate Pastor

In the April 6, 2016 newsletter, an update was given about where we find ourselves with regard to the present and future leadership of our youth ministry at Jackson FUMC. What was uncertain and fuzzy at the time about what would happen as the summer approached has become clearer over the last few weeks. Your prayers for this process have been appreciated as our Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), Youth Ministry Vision Team, and the Center for Youth Ministry Training (CYMT) have worked through the details of planning the next chapter of our youth ministry. We find ourselves with a mixture of emotions about all that is taking place and it is good for us to be in prayer as things get more solidified in the coming weeks. Here’s where we find ourselves at this point:

• Experiencing the sadness Sunday, May 22, which is the time when we will recognize our graduating seniors, is also the last Sunday in which our outgoing youth director, Taylor (Parimore) Wright will be with us. Taylor and her husband, Preston, are moving to Wichita, Kansas, where he will be in residency after having graduated from medical school. With sorrow about their departure from us, yet with confidence that they will go and do great things for Christ and the kingdom of God, we wish them farewell. You will have an opportunity to say goodbye to Taylor and Preston this Sunday following the 11:00 worship service.

• Anticipating the future with hope Through CYMT, which is housed at Brentwood United Methodist

Church in Brentwood, Tennessee, and directed by Rev. Dietrich Kirk, we have been matched with a new youth director. What was uncertain until very recently was when the candidate would be able to begin ministering with us at FUMC. We now know that the person slated to be with us will begin in time to be here for Youth Week (July 20-24), but it became clear a couple of weeks ago that we would have a 6-8 week gap of staff support for youth ministry. We will be able to reveal more about our new youth director in the coming days and weeks, so stay tuned!

• What about the meantime? Any time we go through transition, there is a certain level of anxiety that often comes along with it. Our aim in times like these is to trust in the Lord, call for all hands on deck, and come together as the body of Christ to support one another. One of the lessons learned and points made during our process of visioning, was that it became clear that we need a team, including staff and laypeople, to lead us in this vital area of ministry. For the brief interim between Taylor’s departure and the arrival of our next youth director, we will be leaning on several FUMC youth alumni to help keep us afloat: Cameron Byrd, recent graduate of University of Memphis-Lambuth, is serving as the interim youth director and will be accompanied by college students, Madison Perchik (on a limited basis) and Walker Teer, who will be working closely with our youth as interns. We are looking for others to help in the meantime as well and are asking for any and all willing and able folks to lend a hand. If one of us calls on you, please be in prayer about saying “Yes!” or consider how to help our youth ministry in this time of transition and beyond!

Note of AppreciationMerci, merci, merci for the scholarship money to Live Beyond which helped me immensely to get to Haiti for the recent medical missions clinic. After feeling God’s call to go, I felt anxious about going: however, God really began to prepare me spiritually through Elizabeth Vaughn-Neely’s Wednesday evening study group. Many thanks, too, for the prayers offered. Seeing how people live in person has truly given me a heart for the Haitian people and the mission of Live Beyond.

Jane Phillips

Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God. - James 1:17 TLB

Through the offering from Carols and Candles we were able to make a generous offering to the Live Beyond mission in Haiti. Thank you all!
