City of Grandview & First Baptist’s FIRST RESPONDERS Appreciation Day Sunday, September 17, 2017 11 o’clock A luncheon in honor of our city and church family’s first responders and their families will be held in the FBC Fellowship Hall immediately following worship. They are asked to RSVP to the church office by Wednesday, September 13th. tember 3 rd , we will be kicking off a new Home Connection cam- paign called Word 511. Through teaching and free resources, we will be encouraging families to take some practical steps to build- ing a permanent habit of reading Scripture together. We will also introduce a plan for us, as a church, to read the Bible around the clock for an entire week. Join us on September 3 rd to be a part of this potentially life-changing campaign. Then, on September 24 th , I will begin a six week sermon se- ries on relationships . . . how to navigate the different stages of living in community with others, especially our spouses. This sermon series will coincide with a marriage class that Cheryl and I will be teaching on Wednesday nights, starting September 27 th , in the mission building to the North of our main building. The study, Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas, will focus on how God uses our relationship with our spouse to grow us in holiness. This class will also be six weeks. It is free, and it is open to anyone who wants to attend. We believe in the power of God’s Word at FBC Grandview. We also believe in the importance of close relationships between family members and friends. Let us be a people who not only pursue God and study His Word well, but let us be a people who do so together. Reading the Bible Together “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irrita- ble or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” - 1 st Corinthians 13:4-7 If you’re a Christian, I don’t have to tell you that reading Scripture is an important part of your walk with God. Whether you follow through on it or not, you likely know that without regular Bible study, you are robbing yourself of a key ingredient in your overall spiritual health. Preachers and teachers have reminded and encouraged you to have “quiet times” as long as you can remember. Hopefully you are heeding that advice and allowing God’s Word to have a daily impact in your life. If not, today is always the best day to start! What is talked about less is the spiritual discipline of reading Scripture together, with our family members or maybe close friends. It is unfortunately all too common today for us to com- partmentalize our lives in such a way that we consider Bible study and prayer to be something that we only do in private . . . that they are only personal pursuits. Then we are surprised when relationships fail between two people who not only love the Lord but are also privately pursuing Him through prayer and study. If we fail to share our spiritual lives with those that are closest to us, we should not be surprised when we grow apart. When we pursue God on our own we are strengthening our personal relationship with Him, but when we pursue Him with each other we are doing double duty, strengthening both our rela- tionship with God and also with each other. Even more profound- ly, we are using our efforts to bring those that we love the most into a closer relationship with God. There are few better ways to spend your time than leading your spouse, children, close friends, etc. into a deeper knowledge of their Creator and Savior. Not only does studying God’s Word together draw us closer to God and each other, but doing so also gives us a treasure trove of practical advice on how to live with and love one another well. It is from God’s Word that we learn to honor our mother and father, to submit to each other as spouses, to forgive the way we want to be forgiven, to do to others what we want them to do to us, and (as Paul writes in the passage above) to trust that love can endure anything. Do you want to love your family members and friends better? Start reading the Bible and praying together, and you won’t be disappointed. We plan to give you a couple of opportunities to do just that in the coming weeks here at FBC Grandview. On Sunday, Sep- First Family News

tember 3rd, we will be kicking off a new Home Connection cam-paign called Word 511. Through teaching and free resources, we will be encouraging families to take some practical steps to build-ing a permanent habit of reading Scripture together. We will also introduce a plan for us, as a church, to read the Bible around the clock for an entire week. Join us on September 3rd to be a part of this potentially life-changing campaign.

Then, on September 24th, I will begin a six week sermon se-ries on relationships . . . how to navigate the different stages of living in community with others, especially our spouses. This sermon series will coincide with a marriage class that Cheryl and I will be teaching on Wednesday nights, starting September 27th, in the mission building to the North of our main building. The study, Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas, will focus on how God uses our relationship with our spouse to grow us in holiness. This class will also be six weeks. We believe in the power of God’s Word at FBC Grandview. We also believe in the importance of close relationships between family members and friends. Let us be a people who not only pursue God and study His Word well, but let us be a people who do so together.

Reading the Bible Together

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irrita-ble or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” - 1st Corinthians 13:4-7

If you’re a Christian, I don’t have to tell you that reading Scripture is an important part of your walk with God. It is unfortunately all too common today for us to com-partmentalize our lives in such a way that we consider Bible study and prayer to be something that we only do in private . . . that they are only personal pursuits. Then we are surprised when relationships fail between two people who not only love the Lord but are also privately pursuing Him through prayer and study. If we fail to share our spiritual lives with those that are closest to us, we should not be surprised when we grow apart.

When we pursue God on our own we are strengthening our personal relationship with Him, but when we pursue Him with each other we are doing double duty, strengthening both our rela-tionship with God and also with each other. Even more profound-ly, we are using our efforts to bring those that we love the most into a closer relationship with God. We’re Back . . . It’s been a restful (if also

hot and humid) break since July 1, but our Worship Choir is officially back in busi-ness. I so appreciate these that give of their time and energy to lead us in worship at 8:30 each Sunday morning, and they certainly have been deserving of a brief respite. Still, I have looked forward to hav-ing them resume their Sunday morning

routine. Our regular schedule has us gathering in the Choir Room at 7:45 on Sunday morning for a warm-up and rehearsal time, then doing our best to sing a “special” during the 8:30am worship service each Sunday. We typi-cally practice at least 3-4 pieces of mu-sic each Sunday morning, including the one we will sing in the service that day. With this in mind, we rarely sing a song in the service that we have not looked at on several occasions. Of course, we also have a pretty extensive repertoire of “greatest hits” from which we can draw. Maybe you have considered being a part of our group. Let me assure you, it is a non-auditioned bunch of singers, though in my (perhaps biased) opinion, they do a great job of present-ing a message in music each Sunday morning. If you’re inter-ested in possibly being a Worship Choir member, please get in touch with me at your convenience, or simply show up in the Choir Room any Sunday morning at 7:45. We promise not to subject you to any kind of outlandish initiation hazing experi-ence!

School is BACK! I love this time of year because it is a built in time to reach out to students. We have a REALLY awesome month ahead of us. We have 5th Quarters, a HS Retreat, and our Wednesday night worship services are back. We are

looking forward to another great school year. I believe God is going to do amazing things! Our group has set a goal of averaging 56 students in Sun-day School before April of 2018. We have averaged 28 for the last 2 years. We are called to multiply by sharing the Gospel. The Great Commission is clear and we have students who are hungry to obey and see their peers won to the Lord. Please pray that we will reach this goal. We want our Wednesday PM students to take the next step by coming on Sunday mornings. Thanks for all you do to support our student ministry! God has big plans and we are excited to be caught in the middle of what He is doing in Grandview, the state, the nation and beyond!

Welcome back CDO!

Cayla Mayes – music and learning lab Desirae Allen & Analisa Francia – one-year old’s Ashli Mayse – two-year old’s Jan Williams – three-year old’s Valerie Argumaniz – PreK

We are looking forward to a great year! In honor of CDO turning 10 years old this year, we are having a birthday party! When? On September 14th! Our kids will participate in party games, and have fun party snacks! Happy Birthday, Children’s Day Out! This month we are celebrating the color “Black,” so we will have our Wear Black Day on September 19th! Also, this month we are having “Fruit with Fathers” on the 28th! That will start at 7:30am and last until 8:30. Hope to see all our dads there! Please pray for our teachers. Shaping young minds re-quires lots of energy!

Happy September, Everyone!

I’m excited about the new school year! I hope that you and your children have sorted out your new schedule! It can be hard to get those going at the start! I’m praying for you and your family! I hope you are also praying for your kids each day! I want to encour-age you to pray with them, encourage them to pray for their teach-ers at school and their friends! You are the best teacher your kids have, so if you pray daily for things they learn that is important! Our Wednesday night program is in full swing now! We start at 6pm and are finished at 7:30pm! We would love to have your kids. This year we are talking about God and all the amazing things God has done in the Bible. We will start at the beginning and work our way through the whole Bible this year! Hope to see your kids each week! Sunday mornings we have a place for you and your children! This fall in the children’s ministry we are studying in the New Tes-tament! We are going to talk about Jesus and cover the last part of his ministry! We are moving chronologically through the Bible right now, so don’t be surprised when your child comes home and tells you we talked about Easter! Also back this September 9th is Parents Night Out. We are on Saturday during the fall and the time is 5-9pm. We ask that you bring your child dinner, but we will provide a snack! Let us know your child is coming no later than Wednesday September 6th at 4pm! We do Parents Night Out for ages 6 months – 5th grade. If you have ques-tions, please let me know! See You at the Pole at the elementary school will be at 7:15am on the 27th. All elementary age children are welcome to come and pray for the school, their friends, and teachers! Hope you will join us! I want to encourage you to read your Bible with your kids each day! As it is with prayer, you are your child’s greatest teacher! Children learn best by example, so what you prioritize they will learn is important! We have some helpful resources in the Home Connection Center! Ms. Amy

I recently listened to a TED Talk by Jon Foreman, the lead singer of the band Switchfoot. Foreman is one of my favorite songwriters. He is always blend-ing elements of the Christian life against the backdrop of our culture, experienc-es, and what is happening throughout

the world. In this particular talk, Foreman talks about how life is filled with tension. In the same way that a guitar string requires tension to function how it is supposed to, we are constantly fac-ing tension and release. Foreman says, “When difficult things arise, the temptation is to run or flee, or to cut the string entire-ly . . . but the tension is where we live and the melody that we each can create with that tension is needed (my paraphrase).” I am reminded of Paul’s words to the church of Corinth when he says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all com-fort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” May we remember that despite what is happening around us. We can rest on the assurance that God is compassionate and will comfort us in any circumstance. As we face the tension of life, let us continue to seek to play the melody that God has placed before us and seek to reach those around us with the goodness of the gospel.
