What About Bottled Water?

Is it time to hydrate?

The diminishment of drinkable water has spawned a bourgeoning industry of monumental

proportions. Bottled water has become the largest beverage industry in the world, surpassing soft drinks. The United States alone spends upwards of $20 billion a year on bottled water at a cost that is 300 times that of tap water. There is the perception that bottled water is purer than other sources. The fact is that in the United States about 45% of bottled water originates from tap water with varying degrees of processing. By far the most prominent bottle being used is plastic. It is convenient, easy to package, inexpensive and disposable. Sounds attractive on paper. However, these attributes belie the costs to our health and to that of our planet as 90% of these recyclable bottles are not recycled. These bottles make their way into our oceans and into marine life costing millions of lives each year. Conversely, in an effort to reduce this carbon footprint, some people have started reusing these disposable plastic water bottles by refilling them multiple times. While this may seem like a good idea in concept, it can actually be dangerous to reuse a single-use water bottle. When you reuse these bottles you risk exposure to chemicals and micro-plastics. In addition, the leaching effect of these chemicals and micro-plastics is enhanced with the rising temperatures here in the summer months especially when the bottles bake inside parked

vehicles. The most common chemicals we are talking about are BPAs and PETs. BPA (Bisphenol A) acts as an estrogen. When consumed in water through leaching plastic it can cause a variety of chromosomal abnormalities that have been tied to birth defects and developmental disabilities in children. Humans with high BPA concentrations are three times more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and two and a half times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. BPA can also cause decreased fertility in both men and women. And, when children are exposed to BPA while in the womb, this can lead to complications later in life such as hyperactivity disorders, early-onset

Two Central Arizona College Aravaipa students will have a little help with their ongoing studies in welding thanks to the American Welding Society. Late last month, a group of students from the welding class attended the 2019 Welders Without Borders: Welding Thunder team fabrication competition at the West-MEC Buckeye Southern campus. During the event a number of college students were interviewed as part of the selection process for an American Welding Society scholarship. Two of the welding students were selected to receive a scholarship. Welding Technology degree majors Morgan Bray and Dakota Willis, both former Ray High School CVIT CTE dual credit welding students, were selected based on their outstanding interview with AWS District 21 Director Samuel Lindsey. Both are student members of the recently formed Central Arizona College Aravaipa American Welding Society Student Chapter and the SkillsUSA organization. Morgan is the chapter secretary and Dakota is the chapter treasurer. Both will receive $1,000 to help them to continue their welding studies at the CAC Aravaipa campus program. The team self-funded their appearance at this competition

with additional financial support from the UA Pipe Trades local #469 in Phoenix and the generous support of Professor and Mrs. Colton. The students from CAC AVC competed with 15 other college and high school welding programs from around Arizona to fabricate a functioning go Go-Kart at this two day event. The team, with support from CAC welding faculty at Aravaipa and Signal Peak campuses, earned a silver rating at the event. The students are graded on the safe performance of multiple welding processes, required cuts needed to shape and weld the Go-Karts at the event from a set of plans they provided. All welding is performed outdoors using portable shop equipment they brought to the event. All work to be completed in the event parking lot, powered off of an engine drive welding machine alongside of the other teams. This is the eighth year for this event which is a youth build event that is part of the global mission of Welders Without Borders founded in 2000 by Professor Samuel Colton. Congratulations to Morgan and Dakota on their scholarships and congratulations to the whole team on your outstanding silver win.

Motorists who use US 60 between Superior and Top-of-the-World will encounter lane restrictions and delays starting Monday, Dec. 2, as crews start a paving and guardrail project. The project will begin with guardrail replacement in various locations throughout the 10-mile work zone starting at milepost 230 east of Superior. Guardrail crews will restrict US 60 to a single lane with flaggers and pilot cars. In passing/climbing lane areas, the contractor will close one lane and allow traffic to flow at a slower speed. Crews plan to work during daylight hours Monday through Thursday. However, in the case of inclement weather or if other delays occur, work may be rescheduled to Fridays. Paving is scheduled to begin after the guardrail work is complete in spring 2020. In addition to paving and guardrail work, other key elements of the project include:• Concrete sidewalk/curb and gutter work at the intersection of US 60/State Route 177• Bridge deck rehabilitation at Devils Canyon

• Signage upgrades• Rumble strip installation• Shoulder improvements The entire project is scheduled to wrap up by late summer 2020. The Arizona Department of Transportation will coordinate lane restrictions between the paving/guardrail project and the nearby US 60 Pinto Creek Bridge replacement project as much as possible. Traffic restrictions near Pinto Creek are expected to lessen after rock blasting is completed in approximately mid-December. For more information, go to azdot.gov/US60Superior. Drivers should proceed with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment. Schedules are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors. that the plastic itself can find its way into the water. In fact, a World Health Organisation (WHO) study found that in 93% of popular bottled water brands tested the water contained plastic

fibers. While studies on the prevalence of micro-plastics from bottled water, and the potential danger this presents, are still in the early stages, one can only imagine the potential long-term effects

of consuming plastic, highlighting another reason to limit one’s use of plastic bottles. The lesson here is not that bottled water is bad. Drinking water is good and essential for life. As with any nutrient that we consume, one should choose wisely the source

of the water consumed and the containers used to package it and consider the consequences of processing on that precious resource.Dr. Michael Miles’ Clinic is located at 15601 N. Oracle Rd. in Catalina behind Golf Cars of Arizona. You can learn

The much anticipated big storm hit Arizona like a freight train after midnight after Thanksgiving. For residents of Kearny, it truly was a black Friday with power being out throughout Kearny starting at 6 a.m. and ended around 2 p.m.

for the majority of the customers. Storm related damage to a transformer caused Arizona Public Service to lose an electric feed that is owned by another utility company is what caused the eight-hour outage. At one point Arizona Public

Service had 28,000 customers without power throughout the state of Arizona due to the storm. The National Weather Service reported that multiple tornados touched ground in the Valley and ADOT closed many of the

roads in Northern Arizona. Fortunately U.S. Hwy. 60 and Highway 177 and 77 were able to remain open and plows kept rocks off the roads. Another mild storm is expected on Wednesday.
