Please make sure you sign up your children (or grandchildren), and if at all possible, sign them up ahead of time. Encourage their friends to have their parents sign them up too. The cost is only $5 per child this year. We are coming along well with volunteers and donations, but still need to fill some slots. Please check the boards and sign up. Jim Stevens, Ruth Ann Hoehn and I will be voting members from First Lutheran. Please pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance for this gathering. The first of three Pancake Breakfasts planned by Lutheran Men in Mission for the summer will be held June 9 th . The other two dates are July 14 th and August 11 th . Relay for Life is such a wonderful event of compassion and courage! Edie’s Team First is such a vital group, and I am so proud and thrilled that they are part of First Lutheran. In mid-July some of our youth and adult sponsors will go on a Mission Trip. Pastor Bruce Starting Saturday, June 1, we will go to our Summer Worship Schedule - 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. on Sundays. For the past several years we have used the same service format at both worship times. This year we will be trying something different. Most weeks we will have two different services, one our traditional service and the other a more contemporary service. We will be trying some different styles of contemporary services. We will also try holding some of the contemporary services in the Fellowship Hall. Most weekends over the Summer we will have the contemporary service on Saturday evening and the traditional service on Sunday morning. However, we will have a few contemporary services on Sunday morning over the Summer (with a traditional service on those Saturdays). In the story of Pentecost people from many nations and languages are drawn to Jesus disciples because “in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power.” (Acts 2:11) With our contemporary services we hope to enable more people to experience the Gospel in styles of music and visual presentations that are familiar to them. Our intention is to work to help people have opportunities to worship using styles they find most meaningful. I want to be clear that we will be trying some different things this Summer to see how they go. Depending on what we learn over the Summer we will decide then how we want to move forward. SUMMER LIBRARY NEWS

A good way to enjoy summer is to take a good book and a cold drink outdoors and relax. Whether you are on your patio, on the beach, or in a hammock in your backyard, thee are many books in our library for you to enjoy.

New to our shelves is “Sleep Toward Heaven” by Amanda Eyre Ward. This novel takes place during a hot Texas summer and centers around three women: a serial killer on death row, a doctor in New York, and a recent widow in Austin. How fate draws these women’s lives together makes for a great read. It will make you think about the death penalty, forgiveness and faith.

Also new are two books by your favorite authors: “A Sister’s Test” by Wanda Brunstetter and “Another Homecoming” by Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn.

PORTRAIT OF A FATHER

A father’s voice is good for calling kids home for supper, reading the part of Papa Bear, laying down the law, fussing about the bills, and for saying, “I love you” to Mother.

A father’s arms are good for throwing footballs, baiting fishhooks, repairing vacuum  cleaners, swatting the dog with a newspaper, waxing the car, helping a neighbor, opening ketchup bottles, moving the furniture, and hugging his children.

Fathers drive cars, trucks, airplanes, lawnmowers, bowling balls, golf clubs—and their wives crazy by watching sports on TV.

A father likes to growl sometimes about inflation, missing buttons, cereal on his chair,  bicycles in the driveway, fancy casseroles, the empty gas tank, and candlelight dinners. But his growl is usually worse than his bite.

A father likes steak, roast beef, anything that goes “varoom,” wrestling with his son,  wilderness vacations, and the dress that Mother wore on their honeymoon.

The best time for Father is when, returning home from an outing, some member of the family says, “That was a super day, Dad. Thanks for taking us.”

Being a father is a wonderful experience. Being a good father is an even greater joy. But being a Christian father who honors God by the way he cares for his family is the greatest joy of all.
