Circle of Hope • Founded in 2007, the Circle of Hope honors individuals who have made a legacy gift to First Step in their estate plans or by naming First Step as a beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement plan or insurance plan. We are proud to acknowledge the generosity of charter members Steve and Sue Alexander.
First Step depends on the individuals, businesses and foundations whose gifts and grants help us make the most of our resources. We gratefully acknowledge all annual donors as members of the First Step Medallion Society.
This list includes donations received between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. If an error has been made, please accept our apology and call 941-552-2476 with the correction. Thank you.

Dear Friends,
It is a great pleasure to share our accomplishments through
this annual report. We hope you view it as an invitation to
learn more about First Step.
First Step is many things to many people. As the region’s
premier non-profit provider of programs that treat alcohol and
drug addictions, we serve as an informed educator, an essential community partner and a
passionate advocate for those who struggle daily with the disease of addiction. First Step
is here for those with nowhere else to turn.
While we are proud of our accomplishments, we are also mindful of the challenges
ahead. First Step is focused on the future as we seek ways to help those we serve build
productive lives and healthier, happier families. First Step is committed to ensuring that all
of our clients have the opportunity to live and work in dignity, safety and, above all else,
with a sense of hope.
We will reach those who need our services by seeking new community partners and new
sources of support. We are grateful to the growing number of caring people who help us
make a difference in the lives of so many. Your support makes a difference. On behalf of
everyone touched by First Step, thank you.

president’s letter
First Step is guided by a clear and critically important
mission... To prevent and treat alcohol and drug addictions
and to foster fully functioning, productive individuals. In
carrying out that mission, we change lives and save families.
First Step’s services are made possible through a remarkable
partnership of community support, charitable giving, govern-
ment funding and individual commitment. Each of these
elements is critical to our well-being, but it is the people behind First Step – a talented
staff, dedicated volunteers, good friends and generous donors – who make us a vibrant
and successful organization. Working together, we have achieved remarkable results.
Our future depends on maintaining a solid fiscal foundation, careful stewardship of our
resources and continued philanthropic support. We head into 2008 with great hope and
exciting plans. Change for Good, the theme of this annual report, defines First Step’s
direction for the coming year. We thank you for your support and we invite your to join
us in the year ahead.
Sincerely,

I used drugs when I said
I wasn’t going to; I drank
when I promised I wouldn’t.
Today, my disease is under
control. Thanks to the

me by others, my life has

change for good
Charles Darwin said, “It is not the strongest
that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the
one most responsive to change.”
First Step’s work is all about change —
a change in behavior, a change in friends,
a change of place, a change in what people
think about themselves and their relation-
ships with others. Our work is about helping
those dealing with an alcohol or drug
addiction find the strength and hope
necessary to live a life of recovery. More
than 15,000 individuals found the help
they needed at First Step in 2007.
Addiction is not just the personal struggle
of one individual; the suffering extends to
families and friends. Everyone is affected
when a loved one commits to a recovery
program — success is more certain when
family and friends are involved. Individuals
in a recovery program need the support
of the people who care for them just as
First Step needs the help of friends to
make our work possible.
Thank you for doing your part in helping us
show others that change for good… is good.
• Open only a year, the Addictions Receiving
Facility served more than 1,700 individuals.
• 198 — currently the number of clean
and healthy babies born to moms in
the Mothers & Infants program - two
sets of twins born in May helped the
growth spurt.
• Awarded $1.15 million from Sarasota
County Community Housing Fund to
purchase apartments as affordable,
transitional living for successful graduates
of substance abuse recovery programs.
• Selected renowned architect, Carl Abbott
to develop the site plan and to design a
new residential facility that will expand our
residential treatment capacity to meet the
community’s increasing treatment need for
alcohol and drug addictions.
• Received a near perfect score of 97% on
audits conducted by the Florida Department
of Children and Families.
• Began serving forensic clients in our
residential programs, a State priority aimed
at reducing the number of mentally ill in
the prison system.
• Served a total of 15,091 individuals in 2007.

Since I entered a recovery
program, my entire life
has changed. I know now,
that as long as I’m clean,
what I thought was
impossible is possible.
I went to First Step thinking
I needed to get away from
the stress of my life to stop
drinking. I didn’t realize I
would change more in my
recovery than I’d ever thought
possible. You gave me a new
way of looking at life.

Financial information prepared from financial statements of First Step of Sarasota, Inc., as audited by Purvis Gray and Company, Certified Public Accountants.
First Step is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. We rely on the generosity of our donors and friends to help fund the programs, services and capital improvements required to meet the increasing need for substance abuse recovery programs.
financial report
Time is running out if you’re looking for the most tax-wise way to make a gift to First Step.
You only have until December 31 to take advantage of the Pension Protection Act before the
tax rule expires. Gifts of substantial worth are particularly important to First Step now as we
move toward launching the capital campaign to fund our new Residential Center. Making your
gift of a lifetime now ensures that you will witness the results of your generosity.
The Pension Protection Act allows IRA owners age 70½ and older to transfer up to $100,000
directly to First Step before the end of 2007. The transferred amount will be excluded from
your IRA taxable income and can count toward your annual minimum required distribution.
The transfer must be made directly from your IRA account to First Step and must be for
an outright gift; trusts and other planned gifts do not qualify. There will be no income tax
deduction for the transfer; the amount is simply not included as a part of your income.
Transfers to private foundations, donor-advised funds and supporting organizations
do not qualify.
For more information, please contact your tax advisor for details or Donna Wolski, VP of
Development, at 552-2476 for information on how to transfer your gift to First Step.
