Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish

Lawrence ~ Methuen

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community

of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart. We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist. As children of God, we en-deavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith formation, fellowship, and service. With diligence, compassion, and love we endeavor to help others come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to be led by the Holy Spirit.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Please spir-itually adopt an unborn baby.” Every day over 4,000 babies are killed by abortion. They have so little protection only the hand of God can end this massacre. Prayer is the best weapon to help them ~ the most effective. Say this prayer every day for nine

months to save a baby’s life! “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

April 7, 2019 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Methuen~Lawrence Fifth Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners,

Scott Hahn begins his weekly reflection on the Sunday readings for this week with the words “As we draw near to the end of Lent….” The words caught me by surprise. Lent has gone by so quickly! Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, followed by Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Where did the time go! Scott Hahn’s opening sentence continued with these words: “…today’s Gospel clearly has Jesus’ passion and death in view.” And so it does, and we continue to pre-pare ourselves during these last days of Lent to appreciate anew the glory of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The readings for the Sundays of this year have been profound. We began with the Temp-tation of the Lord in the Desert on the first Sunday in Lent, then read the Transfiguration, The Woman at the Well, The Healing of the Man Born Blind, and this week the Raising of Lazarus from the Dead. I often time use this Gospel reading when celebrating the funeral of someone whose death has stirred up a lot of questions about God’s love for us, or a lot of anger. I reflect on the anger that Martha must have had in her voice when she confronted Jesus with the words “Lord, If you had been here, my brother would not have died!” We probably all have been there ourselves, in that angry place when we try to deal with a death that makes no sense, should not have happened, and naturally causes us to question God’s plan.

It is in this Gospel story that we have one of the two recorded instances of Jesus crying. One of the shortest passages in the Bible is John 11:35, “And Jesus wept.” His grief is real. What do you think He is crying for? For Lazarus’s death? In reaction to the grief of the people around him? In response to the intense anger of his friend Martha? The people there saw it as a sign of Jesus’ great love for his friend Lazarus. But yet others asked why, if he had cured the man born blind he couldn’t have done something for this man that he loved. So many ask that very same question today when they are faced with a loss.

Enter Easter. The story of Lazarus continues with Jesus calling him out of the tomb into the light of day, out of darkness into light, out of death into life. The Easter story is not just the story of Jesus rising from the dead. It is our story of conquering death and living forever.

I try to share this with families facing a difficult loss. I fear I often come across as a priest who is just trying to find the right words to bring comfort, or more cynically, to put the “best spin possible” on a bad situation. What I hope to convey though is the real hope we have Christians in the Resurrection. Jesus did not die and rise for Himself. He did it for us. Lazarus walking out of that tomb is us walking out of our tombs. “Where O death is your sting? Where O death is your victory?” Our natural lives come to an end, some much sooner than they should. But thanks be to God that because of what Jesus has done our death leads to a new life. Perhaps this offers little consolation when we mourn, but it is the reason for our joy when we die.

Father Chris

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.

As we celebrate this Easter with our families and friends, please remember the Boston priests who have helped us along our life journey and consider making a gift of thanks to the special Easter collection for their health and retirement needs.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
