This week's letter is "B". During seminary I did some recreational reading and encountered The Gift of Rain, a story I found deeply moving. Phillip, son of an English family, grows up in Malaysia and develops a relationship with a Japanese sensei who trains him in the martial arts. Key to his training is learning to sit zazen: to be still, gazing at a point on the infinite horizon and enter into silence. This reminded me of another book I had read as a young Catholic convert, The Way of a Pilgrim. The pilgrim wants to learn to pray without ceasing, per St. Paul's admonition, and so is given the Jesus prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me," and told to pray it once when breathing in, and again when breathing out. In this way, the pilgrim would learn to pray without ceasing. We call this the hesychast prayer: repetition with the purpose of stilling the mind to focus on prayer. This helped me better understand the repetitive nature of the Rosary. Catholics are mystics at heart, and we deeply own this tradition of finding ways to quiet the mind, to find stillness in the day, and to enter into one's heart, the seat of prayer. To prepare the way for encounter with God. "B" = BREATH. The simplest way I have found to prepare myself for a time of prayer is to count my breath. To sit in a comfortable position, and count my breathes from 1 to 10, allowing the mind to focus on only my breath. The goal is not to empty one's mind to nothingness, but to allow the mind to come into communion with the heart. And there to converse with God. Each week of Advent you will get a new letter to help in prayer. When you want to pray, to spend that 15 minutes with God each day in mental prayer, start by breathing, noticing what is present, and calming the mind to be open to the Spirit of Jesus. Fr. Each week of Advent you will get a new letter to help in prayer.

This helped me better understand the repetitive nature of the Rosary. Catholics are mystics at heart, and we deeply own this tradition of finding ways to quiet the mind, to find stillness in the day, and to enter into one's heart, the seat of prayer. Donations for flowers and decorations for

Advent and Christmas

We invite you to help continue the tradition of Advent and Christmas beauty in our church

by donating in honor of a deceased loved one, or in honor of someone who is living.

Volunteers will be outside the church after Mass to mention items you may fund if you wish. We will include your gift with the names of your loved ones in our bulletin.

Flower Donations for Dec. 8: We thank our donors: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fuentes, for flowers to adorn the statue of Mary, given for the vocations of his daughters Gabriela Fuentes and Sister Amanda Teressa of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and an anonymous donor for flowers on the Main Altar, given in devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The final count is in and through the help of our generous donors, Saint Mary Cathedral was able to raise a grand total of $23,775 towards new hymnals! This exceeds our goal of $16,000.

Again, thank you to all who donated towards the preservation and beauty of our music. Within the next few days, donors will be receiving an email about dedicating the hymnals to your loved ones.

Bishop Vásquez to consecrate diocese

“Over the years, I have been personally inspired by the love that the people of our Diocese have for the Blessed Virgin Mary, and how this love is expressed in beautiful devotions across various cultures. Therefore, in this Fatima centennial year and in the 70th year since the founding of our diocese, I have decided to consecrate the local church of the Diocese of Austin to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

On Dec. 10, I have asked all priests and people to join me in a solemn prayer of consecration to the Mother of God, asking for her maternal help and protection. In doing so we are not only entrusting ourselves to her loving heart, but we are asking her to bring us ever closer to her Son, Jesus.

I thank you for your continued prayers for me, our Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Garcia, and for the Diocese of Austin. May God bless you.” (www.austindiocese.org) ___________________________________________________

(www.austindiocese.org)

Cathedral School

Dear Parishioners, Advent is a time of anticipation and waiting with meaningful reflection. Our reflection is accompanied with gratitude for all we have received this year. Through your prayerful support, the school continues to receive many blessings. I am excited to share some recent accomplishments and an opportunity to visit the school. Enrollment has reached 194 students, with 44 new students this school year. Thanks to your attendance at the Annual Fall Festival, we were able to raise over $28,000. 1. Pick up a “straw” from the crèche in narthex. 2. Buy the item listed on the straw. Each straw specifies the kind of gift to purchase. For example, “Family A—FEMALE, AGE 8, DRESS, SIZE 7-8 CHILD.” We ask that you not spend more than $25. 3. Bring the wrapped gift back to Bishops Hall by Sunday, Dec. 10, or to the

Cathedral Office M-F, 8:30am-5:00pm. Remember to attach the straw to the wrapped gift.
