Como cada año nuestro Pastor, P. Waldemar y P. Mario estarán participando en un retiro de Cuaresma con su Congregación. Por lo tanto a partir de Febrero 19 a Febrero 23 las Misas de 7:30 a.m. y 8:15 a.m. no se estarán celebrando. Pero la Iglesia se abrirá durante el horario regular para que nuestros feligreses puedan orar.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo privilegiado para intensificar el camino de la propia con-versión. Este camino supone cooperar activamente con la gracia, para dar muerte al hombre viejo que actúa en nosotros. Se trata de romper con el pecado que habita en nuestros corazones, alejarnos de todo aquello que nos aparta del Plan de Dios, y por consiguiente, de nuestra felicidad y realización personal. La Cuaresma es uno de los cuatro tiempos fuertes del año litúrgico y ello debe verse reflejado con intensi-dad en cada uno de los detalles de su celebración. Cuanto más se acentúen sus particularidades, más fructuosamente podremos vivir toda su riqueza espi-ritual. Por tanto habrá que esforzarse, entre otras cosas: ► Para que se descubra que en este tiempo son dis-

tintos tanto el enfoque de las lecturas bíblicas (en la santa misa prácticamente no hay lectura conti-nua), como el de los textos eucológicos (propios y determinados casi siempre de modo obligatorio para cada una de las celebraciones).

► Para que los cantos, sean totalmente distintos de los habituales y reflejen la espiritualidad peniten-cial, propia de este tiempo.

► Para lograr una ambientación sobria y austera que refleje el carácter de penitencia de la Cuares-ma.

Święto Katedry świętego Piotra,

Apostoła 22 lutego

Do roku 1969 Kościół łaciński obchodził dwa święta związane ze Stolicą Piotrową: Katedry św. Piotra w Rzymie (18 I) i Kate-dry św. Piotra w An-tiochii (22 II). Po re-formie liturgii oba te święta zostały połą-czone w jedno pod wspólną nazwą: Katedry św. Piotra. Od IV w. chrześcijanie rzymscy znali i obchodzili święto Katedry świętego Piotra, wspominając, że Apostoł był biskupem tego miasta. W ten sposób składali hołd św. Piotrowi za to, że właśnie w Rzymie założył gminę chrześcijańską i miasto to obrał za stolicę chrześcijaństwa. Ponieważ jed-nak święto wypadało dawniej często podczas postu, dlatego w wielu stronach, np. w Galii, za-częto je obchodzić 18 stycznia. Z biegiem lat ustaliły się zwyczajowo dwa święta: 18 stycznia Katedry św. Piotra w Rzymie, a 22 lutego Kate-dry św. Piotra w Antiochii. Według bowiem bar-dzo dawnej tradycji św. Piotr miał najpierw zało-żyć swoją stolicę prymasa Kościoła Chrystuso-wego w Antiochii, gdzie przebywał kilka lat, za-nim udał się ok. 42 roku do Rzymu i tam poniósł śmierć męczeńską. W 1558 roku papież Paweł IV ustalił ostatecznie 18 stycznia jako pamiątkę wstąpienia na tron rzymski św. Piotra, a 22 lute-go na obchód święta objęcia stolicy w Antiochii. Oba święta obchodzone początkowo w Rzymie Paweł IV rozszerzył obowiązkowo na cały Ko-ściół łaciński.

W bazylice św. Piotra w Rzymie za głównym oł-tarzem, w absydzie, jest tron (katedra), na któ-rym miał zasiadać św. Piotr. Do V w. znajdował się on w baptysterium bazyliki św. Piotra. Drogo-cenna relikwia składa się jedynie z wielu kawał-ków drewna, spojonych od dawna bogato zdo-bionymi płytami z kości słoniowej. Słynny budow-niczy bazyliki św. Piotra, Jan Wawrzyniec Bernini (+ 1680), zamknął ów tron w potężnej, marmuro-wej budowli. Ta właśnie katedra stała się symbo-lem władzy zwierzchniej w Kościele Chrystusa tak w osobie świętego Piotra, jak również jego następców. Święto to jest więc z jednej strony aktem wdzięczności Rzymian za to, że św. Piotr tak bardzo wyróżnił ich miasto, z drugiej zaś strony - jest okazją dla wiernych Kościoła okaza-nia następcom św. Piotra wyrazu czci. Tron, na którym zasiadał św. Piotr, obecny stale w koście-le, gdzie papież odprawia nabożeństwa i spra-wuje liturgię dnia, jest nieustannym świadec-twem, że biskupi rzymscy mają tę samą władzę nad Kościołem Chrystusa, jaką miał Piotr; że na-stępcami Piotra mogą być tylko biskupi rzymscy.

Wyrusz na pustynię Jezus ... czterdzieści dni przebywał w Duchu na pustyni, gdzie był kuszony przez diabła?. Dlaczego pustynia? Pustynia to wolność, ponieważ jest tak surowa . Pustynia to cisza i spokój od wielu niepotrzebnych rzeczy. Pustynia to doświadczenie ubóstwa człowieka, który znajduje się przed Bogiem. Trzeba wiele odwagi aby wybrać pustynię. Dzisiejszy człowiek boi się pustyni, ponieważ boi się ciszy. Jeżeli dobrze się zastanowimy, to dojdziemy do wniosku, że potrzeba hałasu jest symptomem strachu, nie rozwiązanych problemów, niechęcią do zamyślenia, refleksji. Dlatego też dzisiejsza młodzież, i nie tylko, ucieka tak często do hałaśliwej i niezrozumiałej muzyki. Nie umie znaleźć się w oazie ciszy. Chrystus Pan szuka pustyni: nikt, tak jak On nie mógł odczuwać ciężaru życia ludzkiego, zubożonego brakiem Boga. Jezus odczuwał dystans między człowiekiem i Bogiem, który został sprowokowany przez grzech. Dlatego też tak często Jezus szukał chwil ciszy i skupienia. Ghandi pewnego dnia powiedział: Im więcej upływa czasu, tym bardziej przekonuję się, że nie umiem być szczęśliwy bez ciszy, bez modlitwy". Zróbmy dzisiaj rachunek sumienia: my i cisza; cisza w czasie modlitwy; chwile ciszy we Mszy św.

First Sunday of Lent Mark 1:12-15

Jesus is tempted in the desert by Satan. Background on the Gospel Reading On the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading in each Lectionary cycle is about Jesus’ temptation in the de-sert. This event in the life of Jesus is reported in each of the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—but it is not found in John’s Gospel. This year we read Mark’s account of this event. Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details throughout Mark’s narrative are sparse. This is evi-dent in Mark’s account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Satan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quoting Scrip-ture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark report that an-gels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert. In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the temptation of Jesus follows his baptism by John the Baptist. In Mark’s Gospel, we are told that Jesus went into the desert immedi-ately after his baptism, led by the Spirit. Jesus’ public minis-try in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark’s Gospel makes a connection between the arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus’ preaching about the Kingdom of God is in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist, but it is also something new. As Jesus announces it, the Kingdom of God is begin-ning; the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises is here. The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wan-dered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert for 40days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an angel of the Lord. Re-membering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of Lent. In Mark’s Gospel, the desert marks beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten obser-vances are only a beginning, a preparation for and a rein-forcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of Baptism in which we prom-ised to reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was min-istered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed because Jesus con-quered sin once and for all in his saving death on the cross.

St. Mary’s Parish News February 18 2018 Prayer can help us to become more responsive to those who suffer. Find ways to pray often during Lent, fo-cusing on the needs of those who are the victims of injus-tice. Here are a couple of suggestions. 1. Gather with your family to look through newspapers and news magazines, or browse the Internet to identify injustices occurring throughout the world. Select one injustice, learn about the causes of the injustice, and pray for those who are affected by it. Keep track of developing news about the situ-ation and pray together before dinner or bedtime and at Mass as well. Here is a possible prayer: God our Father, we know that you hear the cries of all those who suffer. Hear us as we pray for those who suffer unjustly so that their plight might be relieved. We pray also for their oppressors that they will have a change of heart and see the

error of their ways. May they use their power for the good of all. We pray for ourselves that we might have the compas-

sion and the courage to do whatever we can to alleviate the suffering and to address the causes of that suffering. We ask

you this through Christ, our brother. Amen. 2. Read aloud one of the Church’s Readings for Lent with your family before one meal each week during Lent. You can find a list of the readings at www.usccb.org/bible/index.cfm.

Fasting Fasting can help us recognize our bad habits and overcome them. It can help us live with an awareness of our dependence on God’s love. Here are two ways you can in-corporate fasting into your life during Lent. 1. Choose at least one meal each week of Lent at which you will eat less food than normal. Perhaps you can have a sim-ple dinner of soup and bread. At that meal be especially aware that many people will go without a meal this day. Fasting is a means of expressing solidarity with those who are suffering around the world. Later that day when you feel hungry, use that sensation as a reminder to pray for those who have little food. 2. Fast from spreading gossip about others. We are often tempted by our own righteousness to want to say hurtful things about others to make us feel better about ourselves. Gossip dehumanizes people and renders us more likely to treat others without respect. When you feel the desire to speak negatively about others, pray instead for those you may have hurt with gossip. Pray for a more generous heart.

Almsgiving We can become more like Jesus during Lent by being generous. With your family select a charitable organi-zation and collect donation money. You may want to select an organization that addresses the injustices you identified earlier as part of the “Prayer” aspect of Lent. Here are some suggestions for collecting money. 1. Put a jar or container on the kitchen table. Contribute a set amount of money, determined by your family, each day of Lent. 2. Give up buying junk food and contribute that money to the jar. 3. If you have young children who cannot contribute money, let them contribute by decorating the jar or container. 4. Hold a yard sale and contribute the proceeds to the collec-tion. 5. Invite friends to join your family in contributing to the charity.

Living for Others During Lent Lenten Practices for Daily Life

During Lent we take up practices that help us to become aware of and responsive to the needs of others. The three traditional practices of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. A commitment to these practices during Lent leads to an awareness of God and conversion of the heart.
