Sermon Corner This week we continue a sermon series titled, “A Family Legacy.”

What are we doing to build a family legacy? We take vacations to

build memories. We are active in our children’s lives to show them

we care. We work hard to provide for our families. But a family

legacy is more than these if we are people of faith. The way we walk out our faith is

essential in developing a lasting legacy of faith.

This Week’s Message

“A Family Legacy- A Father’s Faithfulness”

Loving God more than anything is not easy. As we live out this

love for God we develop a legacy of faith that will model for our

children what it looks like to love God more than anything.

Scripture is from: Genesis 22:1-19; Matthew 10:37-39

Christ gave us the perfect examples of a legacy of faith. Jesus

showed us love and humility. Jesus walked the walk, He didn’t just talk

the talk. He set an example, like we should show our children an

example.

a “Homeless for the Night” sleepover to provide the youth with insight into what it is like to be homeless and the

challenges they face.

October 8, 2016- FUMCL Has Talent & Chili Cook-Off (each

youth should bring a 10lb bag of baking potatoes & a dessert)

October 15, 2016- Rummage Sale and Car Wash from 10-

3pm. (Youth arrive at 8:00am to set up)

February 3-5, 2017- ROCK in Ocean City, Maryland

$491.65 & COUNTING!!! One effort to help those in West Virginia and Ellicott City with flood relief is underway. We are collecting your loose change- whatever you would like to donate. Each Sunday, as you arrive to worship, we will have a jar bank in the alter area of each service for you to drop off loose change. Of course we will also accept paper money and check, but this is an effort to put that loose

change that often gets left in car cup holders to good use. The totals will be posted in the bulletin each week.

FUMCL is considering offering the 24 week Disciple Red Book bible study evening class starting this September. A sign-up sheet is on a clipboard is available on the table in the Narthex. Please signup if you are interested in taking the class. Below is a description of the lesson: The study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible. The first study in the program is DISCIPLE: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY, a twenty-four week overview of the entire Bible. Commitment and Time Involved Three and one-half to four hours of independent study each week (40 minutes daily for leaders and 30 minutes daily for group members) in preparation for weekly group meetings. Study Manual Each member of the group needs a study manual and a Bible. The Bible is the text for the study and the study manual will guide group members in their study and preparation for the weekly group session. The study manual also includes suggestions for individual and study-related activities. Space is provided for taking notes while reading Scripture, for recording thoughts and questions arising out of daily study, and for notes during the weekly group session. The titles of the sessions along with theme words and theme verses, and major persons, events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the minds of the participants. The principal Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story.

For those with a talent for growing- Bring in or show us a photo of your champion garden vegetable (biggest zucchini, ugliest tomato, most unique/unusual garden edible…) from this summer OR show case some flower(s) you have grown this year (vase, arrangement or photo).

Seven Secrets to Sexual Purity series

This program by Dannah Gresh, is for mothers & daughters

and opens the doors to tough conversations. It focuses on

how much God loves each of us and the plans he has made

for each of us. It provides practical tools to live a lifestyle

of purity to the very day of their wedding.

Parents often see dramatic changes in their daughters after they have participated in

the class. This fun and unique approach to a difficult topic will deepen our

relationship with God. Each session carries a deep scriptural challenge to touch us on

an intimate level.

The class will run every Sunday from 10/1 through 12/4 (with the exception of 11/27).

It includes a special tea (a very important lesson!) on Friday evening 10/21 and a

celebration luncheon on 12/4 at 12:30. We ask that everyone be in class no later than

9:45AM - ready to participate. The class will end between 10:45-11:00AM each

week.

Please join me on Sunday, September 25 at 12:30 for a parent orientation

(including dads) where we can openly discuss the materials and I can answer any

questions you may have.

Lois Hamilton’s senior group is going to the Sight & Sound Theater in Pennsylvania to see “SAMSON.” Date: Thursday, November 10, 2016 Cost: $109.00 per person Cost includes transportation, buffet lunch at Arthur Terrace in the Best Western Eden Resort, reserved seats for the show, all taxes and tips for the driver. The group will leave Beltsville Community Center on Sellman Road at 9:30 am and should return by 7:30 pm. (attendees could car pool from First Church for anyone needing a ride) Contact Lois at 301-498-9736 for more details. Make checks payable to BYAH, (Beltsville Young at Heart) and give them to Lois to reserve your spot. Deadline is October 1, 2016 (only 54 seats are reserved)
