DayShore is a wonderful new way to revamp local churches' tradi-tional VBS programs into a full week of on-site camp opportunities! Their curriculum from Inside Out is called Peace Works. It’s That Time of Year Again! What time –you ask? For Methodists— it’s called Annual Conference time. In the United States, it has been happening since Bishop Francis Asbury first convened the preachers for two weeks in 1784 at what became known as the “Christmas Conference” at Lovely Lane Chapel in Baltimore. Since that time, annual conferences have been taking place in smaller geographic divisions. Thankfully, we no longer meet over the Christmas holidays! This year’s gathering of the delegates from the four hundred and four churches of the Memphis Conference (West Tennessee and Western Kentucky) will take place Sunday, June 2nd through Tuesday, June 4th at Collierville United Methodist Church in Collierville, Tennessee. Bishop Bill McAlilly will preside as the preachers and the elected representatives of the various churches arrive. There will be lively worship sessions, debate over business issues and continued questions/discussion of how the decisions of the recent (February 2019) special called General Conference in St. Louis will continue to impact our everyday lives. We will be electing delegates to 2020 General Conference and the 2020 Jurisdictional Conference as well. Philip Sigler is your official church delegate and I know, from prior experience, that he takes his duties seriously and represents you in a most conscientious fashion. This year, the district office has also given us one “at-large” delegate and Melissa Mitchell has agreed to serve in that capacity. Thank you, Melissa, for serving! Lane and I will both be in attendance for the duration. (Lane serves as our Conference Communications Coordinator). I am so sorry that I won’t be on hand here at the church to watch the amazing “Dayshore” VBS get off the ground, but I know this is in capable hands with Sarah Smith. Should you have any emergencies arise, I am always available via cellphone. Dan (731) 501-6254 All sessions of the General Conference are open to the public. If you’d like to under-stand more about how the church functions at a larger level, come on down to Collierville and join us. Wishing you a great start to your summer! Christ’s peace, Pastor Dan

COMING: SUMMER STUDY SERIES “LUNCH AND LEARN!”

Maybe it is true of you or someone you know? Are you (or they) growing busier and busier with each passing day? Accomplishing less? Growing weary and nerves frayed? Though well-intentioned, has your time for pray-er or meditation been frequently set aside in favor of needs that seem relentless or immediate? Which do we reach for first thing in the morning—our cellphones or our Bibles? What percentage of our day is spent looking at a handheld device? Is it possible (for us) to have a pro-longed conversation without looking at the incoming text messages? When was the last time you enjoyed a leisure-ly home-cooked meal? The last time you had neighbors or friends over for an afternoon? Is the practice of Sab-bath a part of your life—and do you look forward to Sab-bath? When was the last time we truly examined the small habits that compose our days and their cumulative effects on our lives?

These and other questions will be considered as we examine The Common Rule: Habits of Purpose for an Age of Distraction, by Justin Whitmel Ear-ley. Earley is a committed Christian who has served as a missionary to China but works as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer in Richmond, Virginia. After suffering from panic attacks from sources unknown, he began to truly examine his life and his habits. This book is his gift to all of us.

We’ll meet for six weeks beginning Tuesday, June 11th for one hour be-tween Noon and 1 PM. A light lunch will be served and we PROMISE to have you in and out each time within the hour! Sessions will be facilitated by Dan Camp and Carole Mathis.

Books will need to be ordered so we will need advance registrations. To reserve your space, e-mail Pastor Dan at [email protected].

Where There is Life There is Hope Families that have suffered the heartache, trauma, and suffering that accompanies a loved-one’s life of addiction, knows all too well the power of hope. Chosen Vessel Ministries is a licensed, faith based, non-profit addiction treatment facility that serves, primarily, women. Located in Bartlett, Chosen Vessel Ministries provide two levels of outpatient treatment services for addiction and other mental health disorders. In addition to the services provided in Bartlett, Chosen Vessel Ministries facilitate therapeutic classes and mentoring sessions in the Women’s Therapeutic Residential Center (WTRC) in Henning. They meet with inmates working diligently to overcome their obstacles, and work towards recovery. Inmates encourage and support one another along the way. September is National Recovery Month, in the past Chosen Vessel Ministries has organized a public event for the women and families they serve. This year, they have been granted permis-sion to host a half-day celebration at WTRC, the date of the event is September 7th. Women of the re-entry ministry and their recovery specialists have been in the planning stages of this celebration for over a month. In addition to the meals, plans include skits, shared stories of recovery, and a special guest speaker. This celebration will serve 150 women, “graduates” of the ministry classes, women on the mental health unit, and those on the therapeutic community unit. We, at Covington First United Methodist, would love to help sponsor this celebratory event by making a financial contribution. Monies will be needed to secure food, drinks, warmers, ice, tables, chairs, decorations, sound equipment and all the other details that make events such as this a success. Your donation will assure a nice celebration, it will serve as a reminder that someone outside the razor wire cares for them. Please make your checks out to First United Methodist,

earmarked for Chosen Vessel Ministries. The deadline for do nations is Monday, July 1st. Please remember this mission in your prayers!

Mayor Hanson served as the Master of Ceremonies at the First United Methodist Covington, TN on May 22 for a breakfast held to recognize scouting in our area. The event gave special tribute to former Covington Alderman Ed Timberlake, who began scouting when he was 11 years old and actively led scouting in Covington and Tipton County for 15 years. Over the course of his leadership, Mr. Timberlake helped 28 boys become Eagle Scouts including his son, Billy Timberlake. Also recog-nized was Eagle Scout Landon Lemons. Lemons, who just completed his first year at MTSU, was the first African American to earn Eagle Scout in the Brighton scout troupe. Lemons created an arbore-tum behind Drummonds Elementary for his Eagle Scout project. Several members of our community spoke on behalf of scouting and encouraged support for its continuation. Way to go scouts and leaders! We appreciate all of your contributions to Covington and Tipton County!

Each year, the Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership hosts an awards ceremony to recognize exem-plary student leaders during their undergraduate or graduate careers at Samford University. Eleven undergraduate and graduate students were recognized with awards for their outstanding achieve-ments in academics, commitment to character, ethical leadership and service to others. The Mann Center’s Director of Community Engagement, Allison Nanni, commended all honorees on their dedi-cation to the university’s mission encouraging them to continue a lifelong faith walk of service to oth-ers. This year, Claire Peeler, was one of the 11 recipients as she pursues her graduate degree in Speech Language Pathology at the School of Health Sciences. She is pictured below (front right).
