Description of Screenings Why should you be screened?
Cholesterol Screening: The American Heart Association suggests having your cholesterol checked every
5 years for individuals age 20+. Individuals with high cholesterol should be screened more frequently, according to the advice of their doctor. Having your cholesterol checked involves a simple finger prick performed by a certified screener. The results of the test report the levels of your HDLs (good cholesterol), LDLs (bad cholesterol), total cholesterol, and your HDL to total cholesterol ratio. Knowing your cholesterol levels is valuable because having too much cholesterol can be a contributor to and stroke. Built up cholesterol in the arteries decreases blood flow and can result in a blockage or a blood clot.
Glucose Screening: Glucose screening is used to identify the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood.
Identifying glucose levels can determine hypoglycemia (not enough blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (too much blood sugar), which are important in early diagnosis of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association provides information on diabetes risk factors, how to prevent diabetes, and nutrition and exercise tools to of developing diabetes.
Pulse Ox Screening: Pulse Oximetry screening is used to determine the how much oxygen is in the
hemoglobin of your blood. Hemoglobin acts as a carrier, binding oxygen to itself and transporting it through the blood. Pulse Oximetry screening is a non-invasive method of testing blood oxygenation through a device placed on your finger or earlobe.

Blood Pressure Screening: Blood pressure screening is used to determine whether or not you are
hypertensive (have high blood pressure). Hypertension is a major contributing factor to heart disease and stroke, so it is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. If hypertension is identified, there are
medications and lifestyle modifications that can be used to lower your blood pressure. Good nutrition and are both ways of maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
Body Fat Screening: Body fat screening is an important factor of weight management and can be used to
determine what kind of an exercise program you should be doing. The screening determines what percentage of your body is composed of fat. It also compares your lean weight to your fat weight, and determines the amount of water in your body. Body fat screening is a more comprehensive way to measure health than BMI (body mass index) and is valuable to anyone starting an exercise program.
Scoliosis Screening: Scoliosis screening performed by a certified nurse or doctor can determine whether
or not you have an abnormal curvature of the spine. The screening is performed by placing your feet and knees together, and then bending forward with your arms dangling. The health professional performing the screening will be able to assess any abnormalities in your spine, hip alignment, ribcage, and shoulder blade alignment.
