FITT—the world’s leading international trade training and professional certification body—welcomes community members and industry professionals to our 14th National Conference, running June 7–8, 2011 at the Holiday Inn Plaza La Chaudiere in Gatineau, Québec. The FITT Conference is a significant national event for Canadian businesses and individuals preparing for or engaged in international trade. This annual event draws 150–200 delegates, the majority being small and medium sized enterprises involved in global business. Relationships which are only concerned with cultural issues ignore some of the basic similarities we all have: the need to feed ourselves, the desire to be respected by others, the satisfaction of being successful in our endeavours and the importance of friends and family around us. Whether at home or internationally, one must establish human contact fi rst to fi nd common ground, and then adjust to the other challenges that are present in any new relationship.

This presentation will focus on the importance of understanding the basic trade tools available to assist in trade fi nance and the reduction of fi nancial risk. An overview of the currency trends will be undertaken along with a look at the infl uence of currency on pricing and profi tability. Currency hedging and payment options in international trade will also be explored.

The economies of the Asia Pacifi c region, including China and India, are expected to grow by over 50 per cent in the next decade. Canada’s market share in the region is about 1 per cent mostly through the export of commodities and large scale infrastructure products such as aircraft and telecommunications. SME’s in Canada, which constitute over 95 per cent of all businesses in Canada, are not participating in this vibrant and expanding market because of a lack of competitive positioning, product innovation and marketing. Come and learn about BC based success stories in the Asia Pacifi c market and how to take advantage of the opportunities that await aggressive, marketing oriented Canadian fi rms.

5. SellingtoLarge/ComplexAccounts Discussion Leader: Leroy Lowe, CITP, Nova Scotia Community College.

Large accounts that have many stakeholders can be complex to understand and diffi cult to manage from a sales standpoint. This roundtable focuses on a set of practical methods that can be employed in early stage business meetings with a prospective client that will help your company better understand the account and enable you to better position your fi rm in the sales process.

Even though Canada and the US are partners in NAFTA there are many non-tariff barriers that companies must navigate before they can tap that potential. Failure to take these barriers into account can lead to many undesirable consequences for the unwary business. Join Ray Joyce as he shares his experiences of taking Hydrotestors International Inc., an Alberta oil and gas service company, into the US market and the non-tariff barriers he found and overcame.

TradeRegulationUpdatesDiscussion Leader: Darcy Ferron, Vice President, Trade Finance, BMO Capital MarketIn 2010, importers/exporters witnessed an unprededented series of updates to several key international regulations, including updates to the Uniform Rules for Demand Guarantees (URDG 758) and International Commercial Terms (Incoterms 2010), an internationally recognized standard used worldwide in international and domestic contracts for the sale of goods. In this session, Mr. Ferron will aim to make sense of what changed, what didn’t, and what it all means moving forward. He will also answer your questions on how these changes might impact your business.

9. OrganizationalProjectManagementfromaSystemApproachDiscussion Leader: Scott Hunter, President and Owner of PMC Project Management Centre Inc. This topic covers organizational project management from a systems approach. Focus is on the: Processes—how to integrate PM best practices with project deliverables and operational processes; PMO Capability and Competency—how to measure and improve PM capability; and Tools—how project tools (scheduling, risk, requirements and portfolio management) support the delivery of the organization’s strategic and operational plans.

TradeCommissionersService:EverywhereyoudobusinessDiscussion Leader: Jean-Paul Lemieux, Director, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Trade Commissioner Service Renewal DivisionJean-Paul Lemieux will present an overview of the benefits for the Canadian business community in accessing the Trade Commissioner Service network both in Canada and abroad.

11. eManifestUpdatesandAdvancedCommercialInformationDiscussion Leader: Étienne Vachon, Senior Project Advisor, Canada Border Services Agency, Project Infrastructure and Integration eManifest, a major Government of Canada initiative, is about getting the right information at the right time to enhance the ability of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to identify potential threats to Canada, while facilitating the movement of low-risk shipments across the border. Please visit Etienne Vachon, Senior Project Officer with the CBSA to learn more about this important major Crown project that will change the way commercial goods coming into Canada are processed.

12. SocialMediaforInternationalTradeSuccessDiscussion Leader: Barney Lehrer – Vice President FITASocial media technologies are changing the way international business is done. SupplyChainTradeFinanceSolutionsforCompaniesDiscussion Leader: Anju Malhotra, Senior Manager, Trade Finance & Team Lead, ScotiabankFinancial Supply Chain (FSC) is the sequence of events covering the product’s entire life cycle from inception to consumption. This round table will discuss effective management of the FSC which creates value to the buyer and seller by: optimizing working capital to increase productivity; mitigating risk and increasing transparency across the supply chain; creating efficiencies along the business cycle; and automating processes to achieve operational excellence.
