Page 1 FJKF President’s Report Hi Everyone, This Month sees us finalising plans and collecting images for the Interclub Competition. For our newer members, once a year we have an inter-club competition with our closest camera club neighbours; the Blacktown City Photographic Club and the Parramatta RSL Camera Club. A shield is awarded to the club which accumulates the most points from the judge on the night. At present, we are the holders of the shield having won it from Blacktown last year. The Interclub Competition Night will be held on Thursday 28 June 2007 at Castle Hill RSL, starting at 7:30 pm. Please join us on the night for a chance to discuss photography with our fellow photographers and see what images they are proud of. On another matter, recently I announced that Simon Finch has moved sideways on the Management Committee to take up his new role as Member Benefits Coordinator. Simon will be responsible for arranging various things that will benefit members. These may include; discounts at retailers, bulk deals on equipment etc., access to venues as a camera club, sponsorship of events, etc. If you have any contacts or suggestions that would benefit members please discuss this with Simon when next you see him, or send an email to [email protected] Val Fenbow has agreed to take on the Competition Coordinator's role and has stepped into this with her usual friendliness, efficiency and management talents. Thanks to Val for accepting this role and becoming part of the management team. Speaking of teams, it’s great to see how many members are actively involved in the running of the club. We now have two very active sub-committees, the Social Committee and the Competition Committee, working away in the background for the good of the club. Please take it from me that your work and enthusiasm does not go unnoticed by everyone. In addition, we have a small group of members looking at the trade show proposal mentioned earlier this year. Equally pleasing is the number of members I see helping to set up and pack away the equipment we need each meeting night. Your help also does not go unnoticed. Without you all, our club could not function in the way we have come to expect. You know, the best and easiest way to be known and appreciated in the club is to lend a hand. COMPETITIONS & EXHIBITIONS and Other

Photograph Willoughby’s Environment to Win Competit ion Budding photographers have the opportunity to win fantastic prizes and take part in an exhibition through Willoughby City Council’s annual

Environment in Focus Photography Competition and Exhibition.

Now in its fourth year, the popular annual competition attracts more than 100 high quality entrants each year.

Photographers are invited to submit images taken within the Willoughby Local Government Area in response to the competition theme ‘Immersed

in Nature, people connecting with their environment’.

Prizes include $1,000 for the winner of the open category and $500 for the runner up. The school student winner will receive photographic

equipment for both themselves and their school to the combined value of $500.

“The photography competition allows aspiring photographers to showcase this beautiful natural environment and remind us that we must continue

to conserve and protect our local environment,” said Willoughby Mayor Pat Reilly.

A panel of photography professionals will select works for inclusion in the exhibition and award prizes based on how well the photo responds to the

theme, artistic merit and technical skill.

The 2006 competition saw winner Jan Safer’s photograph, Water II - Bubbles impress judges SMH Photographer Andrew Mears, Australian Centre

for Photography Curator Bec Dean and Australian Geographic Art Director Warren Field with its technical skill combined with an element of

surprise.

“I was impressed by the range and subtlety of colour - especially from the highlights under the falling water to the small splash of green in the fern -

aesthetically very pleasing and technically well-exposed, indicating the effort gone to by the photographer,” said Warren Field, competition

judge and Australian Geographic Art Director.

The 2007 gallery of images will be displayed from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, 23 July to 9 August at the Foyer Exhibition Space, Willoughby City Council, 31 Victor St, Chatswood.

Entry forms are available at

www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au.

Entries close 6 July 2007.

“Action Stations”

David Miller – HCC Guest Speaker 5th June, 2007

The Hills Camera Club is privileged to have David Miller as guest speaker on action photography on the evening of 5th June 2007. David is currently Webmaster at the St George Leagues Club Photographic Society and has previously held the position of President of that club for three years. Although he has been a photographer for longer than he remembers, he does recall his first camera – a Pentax MX (35mm film model that dates from around 1976). David has a tremendous experience in action photography, having shot subjects as diverse as wheelchair dancing, rodeo, gymnastics, contortionists, weight lifting and athletics. He is currently an accredited photographer for the National Basketball League and the Rural Fire Service and has also worked as an accredited photographer for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the Sydney 2000 Paralympics. Apart from action, his photographic interests extend to just about anything including landscape and fine art nude photography and he has taken out several significant photographic awards in International, National and local competitions. These include gold and bronze medals in the Trierenberg (Austrian) 2005 Super Circuit, the 2005 FCC Topshot, and being twice winner of the Taralga Rodeo photographic competition. David has also been awarded the Fellowship of the Australian Photographic Society (FAPS) by competition and AFAIP.

David says a good action photo is about catching the peak of the action and to do that you need to understand the sport and know what makes a defining moment. The human element is critical to great action photography. Being the St George Leagues Club Photographic Society Webmaster, it comes as no surprise that he recommends a visit to their website (http://www.stgphoto.org.au/). In fact, you can find some of David’s excellent work there under the member galleries. David also designed and built the FCC website - http://www.photographynsw.org.au/ which is also recommended surfing for any camera club member. These days, David shoots exclusively with digital and has nice collection of quality zoom lenses covering from 17mm out to 200mm on several 1.6x crop bodies. When asked about which piece of equipment he can’t live without, the answer is simple – “Lenses, the glass is where the quality is”. He also mentions two local photographers as inspirational to his work – Professor Des Crawley from the University of Western Sydney and Frank Leitner. Be sure not to miss this opportunity to hear David speak about his first-hand experiences with a wide range of action photography, and be prepared to see some stunning images from his collection.

COMPETITION CO-ORDINTOR’S REPORT

Last month was great, congratulations to all who won awards especially those who won for the first time. The 4 image rule seems to be working well, another couple of nights will see it fine tuned. We had exactly the same numbers of digitals as previous month, every one must be getting the upload sorted out. This month we will have change and view the colour prints, monos and minis, then the slides and digitals.. On the 24th May 12 tried and true members, Mary and Tony Spence, William and Robyn Stewart, Rob and Maria Brear, Bob and Chris Cook, Barry Clinch, Roger Buckley, Maria Ericksen and Val set up the judging stands, projector and computer so that the Club entries for the Interclub competition could be judged. It took some time as the entries were of high standard and the judges were very thorough. Many thanks to all. There has been a delay in the production of the award certificates, for this I apologies, they will all be there on the next Competition night. The next Competition has the Open and Set. The set subject is Nature . Last month we had a large number of entries in the Set subject – Architecture, hope to see many photographers tackle Nature this month, remembering that there can be no sign of human hand work or interference. On competition nights please make sure your entries are on the stands by 7.45 so that we can get a flying start. Thanks again go to the members who help on competition nights, more are always welcome please let me know or just front up. Val For the Competition Committee.

The Set Subject Definition for June Competition. NATURE – Nature photography may include animals and plants in what appears to be natural habitat, geology and phenomena not produced by man. The accurate recording of the subject and natural environment is the prime factor. Evidence of man, his manipulation or his environment in any part is undesirable and should be avoided. After satisfying the above requirements, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs.

Congratulations to William Stewart Merit Certificate in the Australian Photographic Society, Slide Division, “2007 Syd Leaney Trophy Competition”. “Ann E # 07”.

Interclub Competition HCC Representatives The judging of images took place on the 24th May to work out who was going to be chosen to represent HCC in the Interclub Competition on the 28th June 2007. The judges found it difficult as all of the images up for selection were HCC Merit Awarded images. Congratulations to the place getters and thank you to all of the other members who entered their fantastic images for selection. It is a shame that not all could represent our club.

FJKF

How and why did you start in photography?

I started photography in High School in 1975. I shot B & W, developed my own negs and printed my own prints. I was a member of the Photography Club and from memory most of my early shots were of school functions.

Do you remember your first camera?

My very first camera was a Ricoh rangefinder type. I don’t think I kept this for long, moving to a Canon AT-1 SLR. For the record it is still under my bed safe in its modified Globite school case. My first digital camera was an Olympus with a mind blowing 1.3 mega pixels.

Do you use film/digital or both?

Can’t remember the last time I bought film.

What type of photography do you find the hardest to take?

If I had to pick a category I think flash photography is the most difficult to get right. But I’m working on it.

What photos do you like to take the best?

I really enjoy taking action photos. Its always been my favourite category. If the subject isn’t moving (quickly) it just doesn’t have the same thrill for me. Whose photos in the Camera Club do you admire the most?

Too many to name, and because I am only new to the Club I don’t remember all the names yet. There are plenty of members who enter some fantastic images and prints in the competitions.

What are your thoughts on today’s Judges?

I’m very new to the club and hence new to Judges. I think most of them have been very constructive with their comments. Some seem to find something negative to say about every image or print, while some say something positive about everything. I’ll get used to them, one day. I certainly wouldn’t want their job. I would like to think that the Competition Committee will always try to get a judge who has some intimate knowledge of how to shoot the given set subject.

What advice would you give to a new beginner in photography?

Firstly join our Club and talk to others. And secondly, just get out there and start experimenting with your camera, lenses and software. Take notes on what settings achieve what results. Always carry your camera’s manual with you. I still refer to mine fairly regularly. Keep practicing until you can remember all your camera’s controls and you can use them without taking your eye away from the viewfinder. Maybe practice changing lenses in the dark, or while running down a bush track. Note that when you finally achieve that, its time for a new camera body.

Member Profile –

Geoff Basden

Do you follow any sport or team or have a hobby?

I follow two really special teams. My 11yo daughter plays netball with the Castle Hill Baptist Church team and my son plays in the U9-1s for West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Soccer Club. My hobbies include golf and, although it’s been a long time between drinks, off road racing. I’m currently building a new race car, similar to the ones I take photos of. I’m also a volunteer firefighter with the Dural RFS brigade.

What has been your favourite holiday and travels?

Last year Lyndel and I had a fantastic holiday in China. It is something that we will never forget. We also have lots of fun when we go camping, which we do quite regularly.

Name one thing we don’t know about you?

Last year I jumped out of a plane……………… which means I’m pretty stupid. The kids thought it was cool though.

Where do you see the Camera Club heading?

I think the club is going to keep building. With good quality digital cameras becoming more affordable every day I think the interest in photography is going to increase enormously. We are definitely on the right track holding “get to know your camera” days, and the workshop meeting nights are great as well. To be honest I feel the workshop nights are far more valuable than sitting through “slide nights” of some of our guest “experts”. If we want to see their images they can easily be found in countless books, magazines and websites. The value of the experts comes from them showing us the methods that they have used and what equipment we may need to achieve similar results. I think Simon’s new role is a particularly exciting one. If we can utilize the combined numbers of our members to produce some benefits then that will be fantastic. Any Comments:

I have really enjoyed my first six months with the Club. My first contact with the HCC was when Simon and Ree walked out of the bush and joined me on “Slippery Corner” at the SORRA race track at Colo Heights. We got talking and subsequently came along to a meeting and joined the Club. Lyndel and I have learnt HEAPS since then and it has mainly come from fellow members. The Club is full of wonderful, friendly people and I look forward to a long and happy association and friendship with you all (yes, even you Nikon people!!)

requirement of beverages, until in

the end we had to plead with them not to bring any more; we

enjoyed a variety of garlic bread,

pizza & pasta, with special dietary

needs being catered for also.

What struck me most about the

evening was that there was never

a ‘quiet’ moment, the chatter and

laughter was non stop. We all

came together with a common

interest so there was always

something to chat about but at

the same time learning a little

more about each other on a social

level. It was decided to cancel the

planned after dark photography

session and this actually made the evening more relaxed and

enjoyable as there was no rush or

pressure to move on.

Thank you all for your company I

for one certainly enjoyed the

evening. By Barbara Glover Images supplied by Bob Cook
