Meet Railside Dustin Johnson

“I’ve been riding since I was old enough to walk,” Dustin Johnson says as he thinks back about his childhood. “My Dad was big into horses and did a little bit of everything. He traded a lot and also worked at the local sale barn. Although he and my Mom divorced when I was nine or ten years old, she was the same way.” Looking at it from this point of view, Dustin was born and bred to be a horseman, and has been Team Penning since he was about ten years old. “We found out about it through some friends, started going to the smaller shows, and got hooked,” he says about penning. After about five years, the family was ready to step up and start competing against more and better riders, so they joined the USTPA. “We were excited to start traveling and meet new people, who are really what makes the USTPA unique. Everyone is friendly and the

shows have such a good atmosphere, especially the National Productions. They’re big shows and they’re good shows. The USTPA really works hard to take care of their competitors with good paybacks, added money, and

entry fees that are low enough that people can still afford to go,” Dustin states about why the USTPA remains successful even in the midst of a tough economy. And speaking of success, Dustin

is no stranger to high-level wins, with too many national and World Championship wins under his belt to count. “I’d have to say my greatest accomplishment with the horses though was winning the USTPA World Championship in Amarillo, Texas several years back. At the time, the USTPA allowed one team in each region to qualify to go head-to-head over five or six rounds. Gary Stanfield, Reese Stanfield, and I came out on top for the win in the Team Penning,” Dustin recalls. Gary has since passed away, but will be forever remembered by his friends through the good times had at the shows. In addition to

his favorite win, Texas also houses Dustin’s favorite USTPA event of the year, the Houston Livestock Show. “There’s so much going on and so much to do, I highly recommend anyone visit if they can,” he says. The

show is usually held in March, in (of course) Houston, Texas. Tunica, Mississippi has also been a lucky state for Dustin, bringing home such prizes as the High Point #7 saddle in 2012, and winning the Pro-Am penning for two years in a row now. “The World Show’s “Play With the Pro’s”

is an exciting event for both Non-Pros and Open Riders,” says Dustin. “There’s so much money at stake that there’s a lot of pressure to do good.”Dustin actually won the 2013 event with his step-dad, Rick, who purchased him for $2200 in

the auction. “Penning and Sorting is a true family event for us,” Dustin explains. “The whole family rides and shows. I actually met my wife, Leann, at a Penning when we were still in high school.” While Dustin used to professionally

train horses full-time, he cut down to two or three outside horses a month when he started a propane business with his Dad in 2012. “I worked for a large propane company for about four years, and my Dad had been in the business his whole life. I enjoyed training the outside horses, but really love buying, training, and selling my own now,” says Dustin when asked about his work. Dustin usually has six to eight horses of his own, all but one of which are actively for sale. “My wife has a six-year-old sorrel WR This Cats Smart gelding named Lucky that is probably here to stay for a while,” Dustin says with a laugh. “The rest are all pretty equal, and come and go so much that you can’t get attached.” While he does sell them often, Dustin likes to remember all the great horses that have passed through his barn. “My favorite was a bay mare we called “Mo” that we had for two or three years. She was smaller, very quick

Page 20: Flag'sup dec jan 2014 web

20 Flag’sUP Dec/Jan 2014

Meet Railside Dustin Johnsonand cowy, yet smooth in the herd, which made her unique. We sold her for a bunch of money, but that was one nice mare,” Dustin remembers. A good head, calm demeanor, cow-sense, and the right size (not too big) are all things that Dustin looks for when he’s shopping for a new re-sale prospect. “The Sorters need to be a

little more cowy, but don’t have to be as broke. Penning horses need to be able to respond quickly in order to be successful.” Dustin rides his horses every day, focusing on bending, flexing, and generally getting them soft in the face. He advises, “Loping makes a good horse. I need them to be free through the cattle – no jumping and hopping around, and the loping settles their minds.” Dustin prefers to purchase cutters who just don’t quite make it, around five or six years old, and then teach them how to Sort and Pen, usually using the same horse for both events. The Johnsons typically travel to

shows one or two times a month from about February to November, with the downtime being spent in the woods, where Dustin enjoys his other hobby, deer hunting. “The horses get kicked to the side in the winter usually to allow me time to hunt,” he states. Prior to hunting season, the farthest he traveled was eighteen hours to a show in Minnesota, where the points were gained that eventually

led to a 2013 AQHA Open World Championship in Team Penning with partners Brian Buckner and Terry Brooks. “Penning is my favorite event, but probably just because I’ve been doing it the longest,” Dustin states after a long pause, trying to decide. “You have so much more room in Penning, with more cattle, and a typically larger skill set needed to be competitive.”In closing out the interview, Dustin

states, “I’d really like to urge people to come out to a show and ride. I guarantee that you’ll be hooked. The USTPA really has got it going on!”
