I hope you will join me in welcoming Prief-ert to the USTPA and support them by using their products in your business and recreational activities. We are lucky to have them!

I look forward to seeing you all again in Tunica, Mississippi for the Mississippi Hot Streak July 20-22. Meet RailsideT. J. Heywood

“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”These are words to live by, according to 2011 USTPA High Point World Champion, T.J. Heywood, of Bend, Oregon. To achieve this award, T.J. spent many miles on the road in 2011, and he cherishes every minute of the journey. “I decided to shoot for the stars and ev-erything just fell into place,” T.J. says, when asked about how he felt about winning the prestigious award.

Photos by Dave Kamperman Photography

Page 18: Flag'sUP June july

18

It all started about ten years ago when T.J. took his first riding lesson as a way to spend more time with his two daughters, Shelby and Justine. “It was pretty hard on my pride at first, as I was riding in a circle with a bunch of kids, and I had so much to learn. ‘Put your hand down’ was heard many times during those first few years.” Little did T.J. know at the time that those lessons were the start of something that would grow into what he is sure will be a lifelong passion for not only himself, but his two girls as well. “Both girls are excellent riders and can do everything on a horse from bar-rels to jumping, in addition to penning and sorting, of course,” T.J. says with obvious pride for his family. “I played rugby for twelve years, and I eventu-ally realized that I needed to choose another sport to move into. I love the team aspect of penning and sorting, and of course, the people couldn’t be any better.” The Heywood’s got bit by the penning bug in particular when they saw a flyer at a local arena during a Christmas party. After attending the event with their trail horses, the family knew they were hooked. Shortly thereafter, they began competing locally and regionally, bought a new string of horses (includ-

ing T.J.’s main ride, a grey mare named Ally Pep), and eventually decided to try their hand at national USTPA competitions. “I live in a small town, so it really feels special to get to travel and compete in the larg-er cities. Houston, TX has a greater population than my entire home state! I

remember being awed the first time I drove on their freeways with six lanes across and bumper to bumper traf-

fic. The number of people there is just amaz-ing.” T.J.’s favorite place to go show is in Fort Worth,

TX. He says, “They have a great facility and town. The history alone is enough to keep me coming back! And, of course, ‘Billy Bob’s’ and the other recreational places help too.” In the hunt for the high point title, T.J. traveled to a USTPA event approximately every two weeks throughout the year. He hit all the big shows, and said he enjoyed getting to ride with the best of the best, as well as the local people. The furthest show that he traveled to was the World Championships in Louisiana. “I feel like I have friends all over the country now. I might only see some people once a year, but we still go out to eat in the evenings and have a good time. The camaraderie between competitors is really some-thing special at the USTPA events,” T.J. states. Due to school obligations, Shelby and Justine didn’t get to travel with T.J. last year as much as he would have liked, but thanks to the webcams that were set up at most of the national competitions, they did get to support their dad from home. “I would always try to do a shout-out to them whenever I could, because I knew they were watch-ing,” T.J. says.

While he is not hauling for the high point title again this year, T.J. is giving back to the USTPA through his partici-pation on the Board of Directors. “I’ve always said that if you want things to happen, you need to step in and make it so,” he says firmly. T.J. had already served both locally and regionally, so a national position was the obvi-ous next step in his voluntary path. “Eventually, I wouldn’t mind trying for the Presidency position, but there are a lot of changes I can help facilitate right where I’m at, as well.” Some of the initiatives that T.J. is look-ing into include chang-ing the rating system and al-lowing a draw in more classes. “I’d like to see the asso-ciation even-tually move to a nine num-bered system. I believe this would spread everyone out more, and help our novices by allowing them to ride together on a more even basis. There is cur-rently a large gap between a #1 and #2 rider, and this would help that.” T.J. lik-ens the change to the USTRC

Page 19: Flag'sUP June july

19

team roping number system, although he says he doesn’t want to go so far as

the half numbers at this time. The draw in system would also help

the novice penners and sorters, as it would allow them to

get to ride with new and possibly better riders, without having to muster up the courage to ask those people for rides. “I’m particu-larly grateful for the

shows that have a draw, as I

personally reaped the

benefits of it when

I won the Region Two/Ten finals Open class with a draw partner,” T.J. recalls. “And some people I’ve drawn with in the past have now blossomed into regu-lar rides!” Besides penning and sorting, T.J. enjoys anything that can be done outdoors. “I’m not a cowboy,” he jokingly says. Skiing, playing golf, and going to the lake are just a few of the hobbies that occupy his time outside of horses, although he admits that only five hours were put on his boat in 2011. “I also have a passion for rebuilding Chevy trucks,” he says. The current project is a rebuilt Blazer that is going to pull a one horse trailer, which T.J. says will be “the perfect setup for hauling just one horse.” T.J. runs a lawn maintenance business for a living, and laughs about the time one of his clients saw him in the grocery store while on his way out to a team penning. “Her son was in another part of the store and she had to call him over to ‘Come see T.J. in his costume.’ Most of them can’t picture me riding a horse.” T.J. would like to give thanks to ev-eryone that has helped him along with the way to achieving his goals. “I look at that bronze trophy they give out for being a World Champion, and I see all of the people who rode with me and made that happen,” he says. “I would tell any beginners who are just starting out to get the best horse they can afford and just get out and ride. Start by going slow, and the speed will follow in time.

There is no better time than the pres-ent to start working towards your goals.” T.J. thinks back to a time about five years ago when they found out his youngest daughter, Justine, was diag-nosed with a rare form of kidney cancer. “We had just left a penning and had to go to the doctors, but they told us it was just a sinus infection. The next thing we knew, Justine had to be on dialysis for twelve hours a day, and eventually received a kidney transplant. I had just bought a new mare for her to pen on, named Annie, and a year later she told me, ‘Dad, after giving me that horse, I knew I’d be ok in the end.’ That horse gave her the hope to push through her sickness so she could ride again.” Jus-tine won the High Point Junior Youth title the same year she was diagnosed because she was so far ahead in the points before it happened. Today she competes on her High School Equestrian Team, and of course, they still have An-nie. T.J. concludes with, “My ultimate goal for my term on the Board of Direc-tors is to give back to the association, and hope that maybe my contributions will offer encouragement to someone else. Find strength in your family and friends and everything will work out in the end.”

The USTPA is proud to recognize our leading riders in each rating throughout the year and recognize our Year-End World Champions and Reserve World Champions. Leading rider rankings are calculated on a point based system. The top rider with the most points in each rider rating at the end of the show year is the USTPA Year-End World Champion of that rating and

receives a USTPA World Champion bronze trophy. The rider in each rating with the second highest amount of points earned during the show year is the USTPA Year-End Reserve World Champion of that rating and receives a USTPA Reserve World Champion bronze medallion. World Champion and Reserve World Champions are Based on the point system.

Chaplain Corner

Are You Smarter than God?by Margaret McLain

Sponsored by Cowboys for Christ

The Holy Spirit gave me my inspiration for this month’s article from a sermon and a less obvious place – the TV show “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?” The first source you would not be surprised; the second may make you think I’ve lost it entirely.

On my way home from the sermon one Sunday, the Holy Spirit brought to mind the sermon message about the 4th Commandment, sandwiched in between the other ten, and God’s great wisdom. I’ll return to that thought as you ponder what the 4th Commandment is.

Occasionally, I watch the Jeff Foxworthy TV show, “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?” Most of us feel rather dumb at our lack of recall of some of the most basic questions; however, keep in mind these “little geniuses” picked for this show are probably the best and brightest, have just been studying these subjects, and don’t have years of trials/tribulations/bad team penning-sorting runs, etc in their memory banks. I like to add that disclaimer especially if I can’t recall some knowledge I know is in my brain somewhere. I have never seen any contestant that can claim to be smarter than a fifth grader and at the end of the show must admit that.

Back to the 4th Commandment, which by the way is one that has more explanation than any of the other commandments? Depending on which version of the Bible (NKJV) you are using, it has 98 words compared to the 2nd Commandment (not making graven images of God) which has 79 words. The 4th Commandment tells us to

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). I, too, realize that different denominations define what actual day the Sabbath is and by Jewish faith it is Saturday. That isn’t the point I’m concerned with but taking some day to honor God and to rest from your labors.

Before I get into the commandment itself and finish the rest of the ninety-eight words, let’s look at why I entitled this article “Are You Smarter than God?” and my reference to the TV show about the Fifth Graders. The fifth graders have to remember the information by recall. We can take an “Open Book” test to answer any questions about decisions in life. God has laid out a perfect plan for each of our lives if we’ll just open The Book! There are resources beyond enumeration of how to locate anything and every possible topic in that instruction Book we call the Bible. It’s amazing that the infinite God would love us so much to give us a detailed instruction Book.

So, do you follow his guide and instructions for you? And by the way, as the sermon I listened to said, these ten items were not listed as The Ten Suggestions of God. Now, before some of you say, wait a minute, no one can keep them perfectly and you are correct. If we could, we wouldn’t need a Savior in Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and imperfections. However, when an instruction is plainly laid out and we deliberately ignore it, I believe we have a problem we need to deal with.

Because God is so wise and knows every working part of our being – physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional, He knows what is best

for us. So, the 4th Commandment in its entirety reads: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all you work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” (EX. 20:8-11).

God knows we need rest to be at our best so we won’t fall into temptation. When we are exhausted from too much work, play, or whatever, that’s when we can be tempted and Satan is very much aware of when to attack. He won’t attack the strong but those who are weak. 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant: because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

I close with the words of Jesus “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27). So whatever day you select to worship and rest, know that God will be pleased that you are following His instructions and that you can say at the end of that week, as candidates on the TV show must say, “I am_____ and I’m not smarter than God.”
