Chile Earthquake
• 3.34am on February 27
• It measured 8.8 on the Richter scale
• The earthquake triggered a tsunami which devastated several coastal towns in south-central Chile
• Over 521 victims are believed to be dead, a lot have been injured by the collapsing of buildings

• People were evacuated
• The ash caused a chaos over northern and western Europe sky unprecedentedly
• It disrupted air traffic
• The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimated that the airline industry worldwide lost £130 million a day during the eruption

• The eruption occurred beneath glacial ice• The cold water from the melting ice chilled the lava

Pakistan Floods• Began in late July, resulting heavy
monsoon rains
• Approximately one-fifth of Pakistan's total land area was underwater
• According to Pakistan government data the floods directly affected about 20 million people
• UN Secretary-General had initially asked for $460 million for emergency relief
• The Pakistan economy was harmed by extensive damage to infrastructure and crops

Oil Spill• The Deepwater oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico
flowed for three months
• It is the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of petroleum industry
• This killed 11 men working on the platform and 17 others are left injured
• It is believed that 53, 000 barrels per day was escaping from the well

Mining Accident• On 5 August Atacama Desert, Chile
• The accident left 33 men trapped 700 metres below ground
• The miners survived underground for a record of 69 days
• All 33 were rescued and brought to the surface on 13 October 2010
