The nature of Cloud Licensing - SaaS
• Very little risk of non-compliance, but significant risk of over-buying
• Agreements are simpler, and often subscription-based, but still must be optimized:
– Usage tracking is often provided, but mainly to support platform adoption and not to support cost optimization
• Simplicity can lull customers into a false sense of security, as compliance is often far less a concern
• Customers must still manage certain compliance scenarios, and more importantly focus on implementing optimization measurements that provide the usage data needed to quantify costs

Often need multiple techniques to optimize SaaS
1. Import access and usage data from cloud API or similar (examples: Office 365 and Salesforce)
2. Track client application installs and usage through inventory solutions – just like any other application!
