Plane etiquetteUnsure of the correct behaviour when travelling on a plane? Below is a light-hearted look at ways to avoid common in-flight grievances.
Boarding and disembarking: When
boarding a plane, carry your luggage directly
in front or directly behind. When it’s time to
disembark, do so by row. Don’t try to beat
passengers in the rows ahead to the door.
Hand Luggage: Travellers today cram more
into hand luggage to avoid checked baggage
charges, reduce the risk of lost luggage and
pave the way for a fast airport exit. Ensure
your bag is within the required dimensions,
only bring one and, wherever possible, stow
it in the locker directly above you.
Armrests: Let’s face it, the middle seat
doesn’t have a lot going for it. As you settle
in to your window or aisle seat, spare a
thought for the disadvantaged middle seat
dweller and allow them to claim some
much needed armrest space.
Chair reclining: On short flights, reclining
should be kept to a minimum and avoided
completely during meal times. On longer
flights, the one-in, all-in rule should apply.
Footwear: You’re in close proximity to your
neighbours. If there is any history of odour
issues, footwear should remain on.
The seat in front: You’re in a confined
space, so the occasional bump to the seat
in front is inevitable, but regular bumps
are rarely well received. So, avoid the
temptation to pull on their headrest for
extra leverage when standing up and put
the tray table back up gently.
The bathroom: Reaching the bathroom
without breaking some of the rules above
can be challenging. So, if you’re a regular
bathroom visitor, request an aisle seat and
empty the tanks before boarding to avoid
the rush that inevitably occurs once the
fasten seat beat sign is switched off.

Pack the perfect policyDon’t buy your travel insurance until you have answers to these vital questions:
24-hour emergency assistance: In the
event of an emergency, do you want 24/7
access to an Australian team with a global
network of specialist doctors, nurses and
logistical staff?
Medical cover: If you get sick or injured
overseas, do you want more than just
medical expenses cover? Would you like
help to find treatment and if necessary,
be evacuated?
Natural disasters: Do you want a policy
that covers additional accommodation
and transport expenses if a disaster like
a volcano, tsunami, earthquake or flood
disrupts your holiday?
Luggage: Do you want to make sure
your luggage is covered if it’s lost, stolen,
damaged or doesn’t show up at all?
Cancellation cover: Do you only want to
pay for the cancellation cover you need in
case you are forced to change your plans?
Car hire: Do you want cover for the
excess if you have an accident?
Speak to your travel consultant about
your travel insurance options.

Taking off with the kids? Air travel with children does not have to be a stressful experience. Here are Flight Centre’s tips for smooth flying with children:
Preparation: Ask questions of other parents. Prepare lists to ensure you have thought of and planned for everything. While it cannot guarantee everything will go smoothly, it will improve your chances.
Travel off-peak: Plan your flight times and dates to travel off peak if you can. It’s not easy maneuvering through an airport with a child and luggage in tow and it’s even harder when the airport is crowded. If your flight isn’t full, you may also be able to take advantage of any spare seats after the fasten seatbelt sign is switched off.
Hand luggage: Expect the unexpected – carry medicines and extra nappies in your hand luggage, along with spare clothes for you and your children, spills happen and travelling in wet clothing is unpleasant.
Check-in early: Allow plenty of time to make your way through customs and the airport to avoid stressful sprints to the departure gate.
Distractions: Pack plenty of games, games consoles, colouring books and other activities to help make the trip more interesting. If the game makes noise, be sure to pack headphones.
Routines: Try to choose flight times that match your children’s sleep patterns. An overnight flight may mean that your child will sleep for most of the journey, pack pyjamas for them and put them on, it will help signal that it’s time to sleep.
Stopover: On long flights or those with poor connection times, consider stopping over for a day or two en route to break the journey and give everyone some much needed rest.
