There’s little that’s new in ‘Bourne’-again action revivalThe Bourne Legacy **Rated PG-13; starring JeremyRenner, Rachel Weisz andEdward Norton; directed byTony Gilroy; opening Friday atShowPlace 8 in Carbondaleand AMC Centre 8 in Marion

BY ROGER MOOREMCCLATCHY-TRIBUNE NEWS

You don’t need MattDamon to revive the Bournefilm franchise. And youprobably don’t need PaulGreengrass, the quick-cutting action auteur whodirected the best of the

Damon films about JasonBourne, the trained andchemically altered super-spy.

But if you’re bringing backTreadstone, introducing anew spy and newgovernment overlordssearching for him, youdarned sure better grab us,straight out of the box.

Tony Gilroy burns through30 minutes of “The BourneLegacy” without muchhappening. He takes a good, solid hour before getting thissequel-reboot on its feet. And an hour of actorssputtering dense spy agency

jargon in a dimly lit “sit rep”room full of computers, phones and TV monitors ismore than a test of patience. It’s a test of whether thisfranchise deserves to go on.

Events here are concurrentwith the tail end of the “TheBourne Ultimatum.” Thingshave gone “sideways,” andthe spy lords need to tidy up.

The one agent they’rehaving trouble tricking intotaking one last pill — the onethat’ll kill him — is AaronCross. Cross uses all his skillsto make his way back to thelab where he was altered, toget help from the doctor who

helped create him.Renner is a more credible

action hero than Damon, butCross is not a compellingcharacter until he finds thedoctor. Their scenes togetherare what bring “Bourne” tolife.

Gilroy saves his big actionbeats for the latter acts andhis great chase for the finale. He and his co-writer brotherDan revisit not just earlierBourne characters, but earlierBourne plot contrivances. The Gilroys don’t kill orwreck “The Bourne Legacy.”But this Treadstone retreadjust treads water.
