English Department Overview Students will…

WRITE MLA format and timed essays in addition to resumes and business letters and various creative assignments to prepare them for the rigors of college writing.

Learn to EDIT their work through GRAMMAR instruction.

READ and ANALYZE a variety of fiction (Core Lit Works) in addition to nonfiction (UP Front/EAP) in order to improve CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS.

Build their VOCABULARIES from the basics of root words through all four years in addition to using context clues while reading to help them not only become better writers and speakers, but also to improve their success on SAT, CST, CAHSEE, etc.

2010-2011 Ventura County 29 students participated -17 awards 2010-2011 CA State 14 students qualified for the State 1 student received honorable mention 2011-2012 Ventura County 40 students participated-24 awards 2011-2012 CA State 14 students participated 1 second place and 1 honorable mention 1 participated in Siemens competition

2012/13 Ventura County

19 students in the Scientific Research class +25 students participated

Won 40% of the awards at the County 1 Honorable mention at the State 1 Qualified for the Intel competition

Teaching Students The Visual & Performing Arts department offers

creative opportunities to all students. District policy, The UC and California State Universities,

and nearly all Colleges and Universities require at least one year of a visual or performing art.

The department believes in challenging each student to explore his or her potential.

Real world assessment vs standardized tests. Arts students create a recognizable product not a score.

Arts students learn to think “out of the box”. We are a motivated, professional staff who are art and

performance practitioners as well as first rate educators.
