To design low Energy consumption buildings is now a must, besides a popular habit.

Seicom, in cooperation with Seppelfricke and Richlight Consulting, has decided to issue this document to help engineers better understanding features and advantages of a radiant heater system combined with a sports parquet floor. A radiant heater system consists of coils, pipes, laid on specific supports (plates) allowing thermal and sound insulation on the concrete (picture below).

ELASTIC ESP – T PLATE This type gives a high thermal and sound insulation rate. PEX –C PIPE Seppelfricke SD pipe is the best you can get from modern technology, watertight and therefore not subject to corrosion. PEX-c electronically reticulated polyethylene, EN 597 Standards, stabilized for heat aging . Hot water keeps a constant temperature since Seppelfriche’s pipe has a minimum heat loss. This increases comfort and helps saving.

ENERGY SAVING

The heating surface – low temperature – of Seppelfricke SD system grants a uniform heat distribution, creating a comfortable climate with an air temperature about 2° C lower comparing to traditional radiators.

The system can be also used for radiant COOLING.

Radiant heater system can be integrated by GEOTHERMAL system and

by THERMAL SOLAR (page 9), creating really clean alternative energy.

RADIANT HEATERS: ADVANTAGES and TYPES AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET

They’re called low temperature because the temperature of thermo vector fluid is kept between 30° and 45° C, and below 50° C anyway. Lower operating costs: it’s a low temperature system, with pipes or electrical conductors that works at about 28-40 °C (on common radiators: 70-80 °C). In case of water systems, you can connect the system to solar panels, further reducing heating costs (that depend on the kind of system and rooms). Costs and consumption can be further reduced combining the system with a modern boiler. The main systems currently available on the market for gyms and sports facilities belong to

two types: the so called “ pipes embedded in concrete” (image page 1) and the system

with pipes integrated in the sub structure of the floor (image below).

In this case the pipe is integrated within the sub

structure of the parquet, placed on specific

supports granting the fastening.

Please note: this system requires a fluid

temperature of 70°.

system with pipes integrated in the sub structure

In case of floating pipe placed between the sub structure elements, the surface of the pipe

itself is the heat exchange, therefore there’s no concrete to evenly distribute the heat like

in case of the system we recommend with pipes embedded in the concrete.

The market currently offers some solutions consisting of pipes between sub structure

elements, but Seicom does not recommend this type since we consider it a wrong

project choice for the following listed reason.

These systems have to work at a temperature higher than 70° C and are therefore considered high temperature systems. A high working temperature causes bigger energy loss and management cost increase. The pipe is too close to the wooden treading layer: parquet contains a certain percentage of humidity (water) that evaporates with the heat coming from the pipe, and this causes even remarkable cracking. A further disadvantage of this system is the difficult installation: it’s hard for the workers to place parquet on all pipes and at the same time to avoid accidental damages.

SEICOM’S SOLUTION

DEVELOPED IN COOPERATION WITH SEPPELFRICHE SD

What above mentioned generally represents the main features of standard floor

heating systems with distribution concrete or anhydrite flush or calcium

sulphate .

SEICOM & SEPPELFRICKE

The system with pipes embedded in concrete is the most

suitable solution either for a sport facility or a multi sports

gym with parquet floor.

With this solution the EXCHANGE SURFACE corresponds to the concrete

surface, therefore much wider than the single pipe (as described in the

previous page).

The superficial floor temperature is kept between 26°C and 29 °C and is evenly

distributed on the surface, so anomalous cases of parquet recession do not

occur.

Water temperature in the pipes is kept between 30°C and 45°C – with a

remarkable Energy saving.

Low running temperature puts less stress on PEX-C pipes; this really helps

increasing all components (pipes, collectors and plates) durability.

WOOD AND FLOOR HEATING

HEVEA RUBBER WOOD

Solid Hevea has very uniform characteristics and average hardness similar to Oak. The resin contained in Hevea Rubber wood is actually rubber and this makes this wood very stable and suitable for big surfaces manufacture. Moreover, it’s a naturally elastic wood and therefore excellent for gyms, sports halls and fitness centres. Being a tropical species, naturally growing in humid places, it grants a great performance when installed in crucial situations.

Why choose Seicom Hevea Rubber wood? Granted eco-sustainability. Excellent availability (there are several renewable plantations in many countries). Great humidity resistance. Look: cream white colour, good for sports purposes and TV shots. Uniform structure.

Solid Hevea has very uniform characteristics and has average hardness similar to Oak and Beech. The resin contained in Hevea Rubber wood is actually rubber and this makes this wood very flexible. Dimensional stability, essential for big surfaces, gyms and sports halls. www.seicom-italy.com/wood-species

The SEICOM floor heating system applied to

sports parquet floors is very popular in

Northern Europe and is becoming more and more a fact

in Italy as well. Our Company, always looking for valuable

technical solutions, puts all the acquired experience in this

solution, already tried in several projects in Belgium,

Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany.

The principle is based on hot water circulation at low

temperature (normally between 30º and 40 °C) within a closed

circuit, which develops covering a very large radiant surface.

PROVISIONS:

The main European Laws currently in force are :

EN 12667 – EN 12664

Testing procedures set out R thermal resistance of the material.

Testing procedures must be carried out by authorized institutes, in

charge to issue the necessary certifications, demanded by engineers.

All sports floorings manufactured by Seicom have been

tested and certified according the a.m. laws and therefore certified

for floor heating systems; several projects have already been carried

out with this system.

RULES FOR A CORRECT INSTALLATION SPORT PARQUET FLOOR:

Concrete Concrete has to be perfect, with good flatness measured with a 2 m straightedge, with +-2 mm maximum tolerance. Standard drying time is 28 days; for pre-mixed fast drying products with additives follow manufacturers’ instructions. Concrete requires dilatation joints every 40/50m2 and insulating perimeter zone on walls and on columns base. The perimeter zone is then trimmed before parquet installation. RULES FOR A GREAT PARQUET INSTALLATION

- A sports parquet flooring must be kept in a place with an air temperature between 14° C and 20° C and air humidity value between 45% and 60%.

- Do not cover the floor with sheets or other right after the installation (at least for the first 6 months), in order to allow a homogeneous oxidation of the floor.

- Do not load big weights focused in a single area. - Always use floor covers such as PVC foils or plywood panels with a thickness of mm 5 in

case rolling loads such as movable backstop units or gymnastics equipment needs to me moved. Always make sure the kind of wheel of the rolling loads is made of soft rubber to avoid damages or scratches on the parquet.

- The floor heating system has to be started up gradually and brought up to the normal use temperature, avoiding sudden temperature changes, which are really harmful for a wooden floor.

- Normal use temperature must not be over 27-28° C; avoid also to cover the floor with sheets, carpets or other material.

- In case of floor heating it’s always better to have a humidification system that keeps all air humidity values between 45% and 60% because this kind of heating normally makes rooms very dry, especially in case of big windows.

Project by Seppelfricke: sports facility, sports parquet floor combined

with radiant heating with GTSD geothermal system.

The geothermal system works with free Energy coming from thermal differential of the

ground, to supply power to a heating or cooling system based on radiant panels and to supply sanitary hot water. Advantages of GEOTHERMAL system are: boiler removal (no more periodic ordinary upkeep costs), low consumption of electricity (1kw creates 4 kw) with chance to install photovoltaic panels to implement energy production or solar thermal panels, therefore polluting emissions reduction for a real environment respect.

The SOLAR THERMAL system for sanitary hot water production is the natural and clean integration to the heating or cooling system based on radiant panels.
