My vision

My name is Floriaan Willemse, third year student Spatial Design at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. Through this portfolio you can get an impression of me as a designer.

My thoughts on architecture:

PeopleThe most important thing in architecture is the human. As well as the human scale. This scale is a scale where the human moves by walking.I think most people know very well what they want, the important thing is to ask the right questions. The formulation of the questing is part of the answer. Architecture is about humanity, to design so that the best of people comes into its own.

Constructive / practicalIn the construction elements can be used which optimize and suggest a type of use in a space. This can be for practical reasons so there is less furniture necessary.

FrameworkI think people like to be social and want to interact with other people. Architecture can have an important role in creating opportunities for connections. This opportunities can be economic, social or mobility. It is about creating a framework where it is the question: in what kind of a world do we want to live?

ContextForms and inspiration are often found in the context such as location, surroundings, current use, history, etc.

LightLight is magical. All the other building tools are tangible while light is slippery and ever changing.

I would very much like to present my portfolio personally.

House of light2012

The assignment

Chose a plot from the planning area in Calslagen. Design for the plot a house for a fictitious owner. Make for this design your own program of requirements.

Elaboration

Profile of the residents: a family: father, mother and two young children. The requirements are: big garden, big living spaces (like kitchen and living room), quay, a connection with outside, lots of natural light, for the father a separate studio and from the outside an modest appearance.

The concept consists of three parts; the entrance with kitchen, the living room (a glass box) and the studio.

An important inspiration for this design was the form of the plot and the surroundings. Alongside the plot is a road, towards this road is de back of the house situated. The façade on this side is made from wooden planks in such a way turned you can’t look inside but there can come light inside.

In the middle of the plot I have chosen for a glass box living room, in this way the narrow plot isn’t cut in two. From this box there are the best views over the lake. Under this box are the bedrooms, here is natural light through glass strips in the wooden decking above.

The studio is situated south of the house. Here are big windows on the north side so there is no direct light. On the south side the façade is perforated in this way there is a connection with the house.

WaterThe water is an important element. This connection is made stronger by adding a jetty and a window that half under water in the master bedroom. In this way there is a natural aquarium.

Living roomThis living room is a glass box from which there is the best view. Because of the glass it does not feel as if the plot is split in two.

ResidenceThis part is salvaged and enveloping.

StudioIt is the wish of the client to have a separate studio. This place is perfect, there are windows on the north so there is the whole day equal light.

Plot 5This plot seems to me the best because of the connection with the water and the views.

Concept

Old greenhouses. Nature has taken over; trees are growing through the glass roof.

One of the oldest houses of Calslagen.

>>> rzlbd - Gallery House The facade of the first floor allows light to come inside. And still it looks as if it is one facade without holes for windows. In the evenings it turns around and are the lights of the windows behind the facade visible.

>>>>2by4-architects - Island House Vacation home, inspired by a boathouse here there is also through the large glass facade a connection outside.

Inspiration

Skylights inspired by the broken greenhouse windows.

At the entrance of the house the first thing an adult sees is a framed view overlooking the water.

Facade facing the street. Boards in an angle of 45 degrees, so you can not see through. There still comes light inside.

Living room, a glass box, so there is also further in the garden a view of the water.

The Dutch Waterline in a new perspective

The assignment

Design an intervention for the bunker next to Fort Ruigenhoek in Utrecht.

Elaboration

When you look at the bunkers and Fort Ruigenhoek you see everywhere history. This area is now for recreation. My design consists of a new path from corten steel that cuts through the bunker. At the end the path forms a viewpoint witch is eight meter above the ground.

The form of the , build in the nineteenth century. This is a long line of bunkers and forts witch could be set under water so the enemy cold not pass. I’ve scale down this line to form the path. Along the route are benches, on places where cities are, where the visitor can find information about the history.

The bunker itself is also accessible so visitors can experience how in feels inside. The only changes are that the path cuts in the bunker and allows a little bit of light to come inside. Another change is that the entrance is made bigger so the visitor does not has to clime inside.

This design makes the bunker accessible again and gives the visitor the opportunity to learn about the history. The visitor can also decide not to dive in the history and enjoy a Sunday stroll. Though the viewpoint the visitor can literally see the Waterline in a new perspective. Where Utrecht is marked by the bunker where the path cuts through.

ConceptThe area is recreational, this is also the type of people that will visit this place.

I found it important that the visitor has to make a conscious choice if he or she whats to know more about the history.

The form of the path comes from the Dutch Waterline which is scaled down. The path crosses the bunker, on this place is Utrecht. The end of the path is a viewpoint, this is at the same height as the treetops. Here can the visitor see the Dutch Waterline in a new perspective.

On the places of the cities (the blue dots) there are information points in the form of seating elements. Here can visitors scan with their smartphone a QR code so they can find out more about the history. This can be in text, photos or video.

Woven possibilities

The assignment was to transform an old office building, Baan 74 in Rotterdam. At this point the future of the building is uncertain. Before the economic crisis there where plans to demolish the building and to build a big tower. Now there is no money for this plan anymore.

Design a transformation for the building, with new functions for a new future.Baan 74 had for floors and a big basement. The surface area of the floors are 15x45m. The building is constructed with a concrete columns structure.

Elaboration

For this design I began looking for new functions. Rotterdam is in my opinion a divided city, with this design I want to create a possibility to make a connection for the citizens of Rotterdam. For the new function I have looked in the area what could be valuable, this is the new program for the building:

Basement: experience/watching > theatre, cinema, live music, readingsGround floor: play > big games like chess First floor: meeting, living room > entrance, repair café, restaurant Second floor: moving > sport, chai chi, yoga, theatreThird floor: work/learn > courses, trainings, workshops, meetings, learning Roof: relaxation > roof garden

The entrance of the building is moved from the ground floor to the first floor so people from the busy Schiedamsedijk can stay on the same level as they enter the building. For the new program the inside of the hole building is stripped, only the concrete structure is left. The new walls are made from one long line woven between the columns. The material of the line changes from cloth, plastic and very thin wood. Every material has its own properties, with cloth there are sharp corners and with wood soft corners. The line is uninterrupted throughout the whole building, there are sections in the floors cut out so the line can go to the next floor. I have chosen for this approach to illustrate the temporality, it is not certain how long the economic crisis will be.

The ground floor of the building becomes a big safe open play ground. With big games like chess. The first floor is the floor where you enter the building. Here is the living room of the building with space for a repair café (a place where people help each other fix things) and a restaurant. On al of the other floor are functions where the neighbourhood can profit from.

Layout floors

Cloth is wrapped around the existing pillars. This new wall changes from material: translucent cloth, wood and plastic in a net structure.

All the materials have other properties. They all have a different stiffness, when wrapped around a pillar some make sharp corners, other round.

Doors are made with openings in the cloth.

Page 27: Floriaan Willemse Portfolio

Research to types of fabric and material. The stiffness makes a big difference, it creates tight or round curves.

The material winds as a continuous strip through the building. Along the way it changes material.

There are pieces cut out of the floors to create a connection between floors and allow the stip to go the next level.

House where connections meet

2014

Somewhere in the Netherlands is a timber framed complex with 540m2. Choose one fourth of the complex and design a home. There also needs to be build an extension from 30m2.

Elaboration

For the assignment we worked with abstract words and designed from there. The words I chose where: rhythm, endearing, miraculous and involvement.

You enter the house with stairs on the first level. You will be guided inside by the light from the ceiling along the whole inside wall. When you enter you have immediately an overview over the hole house. For the family that was going to live in the house was the common area the most important. The house needed to support connections. Connection with the ones living there and guests. This is the reason why only the living room is on ground level, in this space is a table for twelve persons. To access the bedrooms and the kitchen you need to go half a level down. Around the outside façade is a band of 90cm, this band chances from function throughout the house. In de bedroom this is a closet or desk, in the kitchen this becomes a breakfast table and countertop. This band allows for les furniture.

Page 33: Floriaan Willemse Portfolio

Form study“A house in the nature a safe place. Here is space and time for genuine encounters and connections with the residents and their guests. A place where light is important, this light changes with the rhythm of the day. “

Concept

The location is enclosed in the woods.

All the rooms are faced toward the woods, with big windows for connection with the outside. The house embraces the forest.

This is the place where the kitchen is.

The most important room in the house: the living room. A space for meeting people with a table for twelve persons.

Entrance

Page 34: Floriaan Willemse Portfolio

Sketch of the plan of the ground floor

This band is 90 centimeter wide and runs along the facade of the house. The band changes from function and changes from inside tot outside. The functions changes from desk, closets, kitchen counter to breakfast table. In this way there is less furniture necessary in the house.

Kitchen

Page 35: Floriaan Willemse Portfolio

Along the wall, which connects with the neighbors, there is made a made a cut in the roof for more light inside. The existing beam structure remains, so the light is rhythmically divided.

The kitchen is partly a new construction. The forces of the roof are transferred to sloping wooden beams. These beams melt with the trees behind in.

0. Ground level. On this floor there are only the most important elements. These are the living room and the band that runs along the facade.

-1. On this level are the bathroom, kitchen and two sleeping rooms.

+1. On this floor is the entrance where you have an overview of the house. Also on this floor is the master bedroom.

Page 36: Floriaan Willemse Portfolio

36

The entrance is high so when you arrive there is immediately an overview of the house.

This beams are the constructive elements, that merge into the surrounding forest.Because of this construction the glass can be glued without extra support, so there is an uninterrupted view.

The master bedroom has a lot of privacy and a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape.

Tacking to the height2014

The assignment:

Design a shelter on a dam, behind a restaurant, on the river the Waal close to Nijmegen. The shelter is for people who are tired from a walk or cycle in the surrounding nature. Here they can rest and eat something. In the shelter needs to be a pantry so the visitor can prepare some food. The shelter is ‘floating’ above the dam and is mainly constructed from wood and glass.

Program of requirements; 40m2 inside, 40m2 outside, two toilets, pantry, inside and outside furniture. The base of the shelter is constructed with six poles.

Elaboration

You approach the shelter through a long path, this path is parallel to the dam and slowly rises to five and a half meters above the water. The shelter is accessible for wheelchair users.

The shelter consists of two parts. Both parts have a triangle as base form, but reversed. One part is pointing up the other one down. From the one pointing up there is a view to the bridge of Nijmegen through a window. This space envelops the visitor like a cloak, where he or she can enjoy the view.

In the other part, from which is point of the triangle is pointing down, are on the first level the pantry and two toilets. On the second level there are benches witch face the late afternoon, sun perfect for a picnic. Between the benches is a path which slowly rises to a viewpoint from which you can overlook the surroundings.

The two parts are connected with a path which bends around the parts and gives the visitors every time a new perspective.

The shelter is mainly constructed from glass and wood. The balustrades are made from glass panels and the facades are clad with wooden shingles which will turn grey with time so the shelter will blend with the surroundings.

Foldable lamp

The assignment was to create a lamp from polypropylene.

I have chosen to make a lamp for a student. Students often move so the lamp should be easy to carry. The lamp can be folded in a small package so it is easy to carry. The assembling is also very easy.

Analysis

Here I have analyzed a location in a very different way than usually. Normally I make a kind of inventory: what happens, who are the users, what is the history etc.

This time I painted my feelings at various places on the site. With the aim to find out which place for me was the most valuable. The result: this was a location where I actually unconsciously already knew it was the best place.I found this a very valuable exercise that I want to use in more situations.
