FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP,~ 44'IH ANNUAL EXHIBITION 1949-1994

DAYTONA BEACH MUSEUM OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 1040 MUSEUM BOULEVARD DAYTONA BEACH, FL 32114-4597 r ll, 1~, ll

FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP, INC.

PURPOSE

The FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP was incorporated as a non-profit organization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide a nd whose work would contribute significantly to its exhibitions. The purpose is the stimulation of finer standards of the creative effort within the State of Florida.

ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM

Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a members' exhibition each year in a d ifferent Florida city. Its educational and other c ultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, films and exhibits.

In addition to the Symposium and Exhibi tion held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.

JURIED SHOWS

To insure an annual exhibit ion of exceptional quality, the show is juried. The organization always brings in an eminent juror from out-of-state who is primarily associated with art administration, education or a painter or sculptor of nationa l repute. Past locations of Exhibitions have included the Norton Gallery, Ringling Museum, Cummer Gallery of Art, the Jacksonvi lle Art Museum. Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Rollins College, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other outstanding galleries.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The 44th Annual Exhibition exemplifies the members' dedication to our PURPOSE.

For housing the exhibit we thank the Museum of Arts and Sciences, Gary Libby , Director, David Swoyer. Curator and Annie Matlow, Communications. The Museum Guild deserves praise for providing the reception.

Thanks to all the Florida Artist Group volunteer members for the work necessary to produce the annual symposium of which Marcelle Bear was coordinator. We would be remiss If we did not thank our generous award sponsors and the juror, John Streetman Ill, Director of Museum of Arts and Science, Evansville,

Indiana.

JUROR'S STATEMENT

Evansville, Indiana President Anne L. A tz.

First of all. I want to thank Anne Atz. Presid ent of the Florida Artist Group. for graciously extending an Invitation to me to serve as juror for the 44th Annual Exhibition. I have not only been afforded the most welcome opportunity to revisit the state of my former home. but also. to see a varied range of artworks In the setting of a beautiful museum! What more can any museum director ask?

In any enterprise Involving the jurylng. process. there is the inevitable gleaning that allows works of extraordinary merit to shine through. A particular pleasure for me Is to become familiar with new names of artist whose assured technique and originality of imagery and content deserve specia l attention.

Since quality o f craftsmanship is key to my consideration. the exhibition offers an overview of some of the best work being produced by members of a respected art association; and there Is evidence throughout of what poet Robert Frost called 'the pleasure of taking pains.·
