Head Coach Willie Simmons

In December 2017, Florida A&M Universitytook bold action to restore the luster to its’proud football program by luring local nativeWillie Simmons from Prairie View (Tex.) A&Mto be the 18th head coach in the school’shistory.

The weeks and months that followed werenothing short of scintillating, not unlike ablockbuster Hollywood movie script, asSimmons stoked the fires of revival in thepassionate Rattler Nation.

Simmons, with the help of FAMU PresidentLarry Robinson, Athletic Director Dr. JohnEason, a former Rattler gridiron great and

veteran colleguiate coach and administrator, and Board of Trustees chair Kelvin Lawson, quickly assembled a top-flight coaching staffby January.

Then in February, Simmons unveiled his firstrecruiting class, an eye-catching group oftalented youngsters who showed signs ofbeing able to make an immediate impact onthe Rattlers’ gridiron fortunes.

With Simmons’ advent, his charisma, hisreputation and the numerous contacts of bothhe and his seasoned coaching staff, havemade FAMU a program of interest on a state, regional and national scale again.

No greater evidence of that fact was the July28, 2018 campus visit made by the nation’sNumber One overall high school prospect,California native Kayvon Thibodeaux, a strap-ping 6-5, 225-pound defensive end, whopurposely travelled to Tallahassee to meetwith Simmons and his staff, and tour the FAMUcampus.

The praise from Thibodeaux via his socialmedia accounts before, during and after hisvisit, gave an even greater boost to the imageof the Rattler Football program, especiallywith him encouraging potential student-athletes to seriously consider HistoricallyBlack Colleges and University (HBCU) in theirrecruiting process.

Then the 2018 season opened with a blister-ing 41-7 romp over Fort Valley State in front of20,262 fans in Bragg Stadium, helping spur theRattlers to their first winning season (6-5, 5-2MEAC) since 2011.

At one stretch, the Rattlers reeled off fivestraight wins, and battled into first place in theMEAC, remaining in contention for the leaguetitle until season’s end - the first time theprogram had title hopes late in the seasonsince 2010.

Simmons, who was a phenomenal prep athleteat nearby Quincy (Fla.) Shanks High School, before embarking on a stellar collegiatefootball playing career that featured stints atClemson University and The Citadel (S.C.),comes to Florida A&M from Prairie View A&M(Tex.) University of the Southwestern AthleticConference (SWAC), where he spent the lastthree seasons (2015-17) as head footballcoach.

The energetic and personable young coachespouses ahigh octane offensive philosophy, which he said should compare favorably to the

Gulf Coast Offensive days under College Hallof Fame Coach Billy Joe at FAMU (1994-2004),when the Rattlers scored on average 35-40points per game, often in lightning fashion.

And based on the early returns from bothspring training and fall training camp, thoselofty offensive aspirations, as well as someaggressive new wrinkles on defense couldtickle the fancy of many in Rattler Nation thisfall.

SIMMONS’ COACHING RESUMEDuring his tenure at Prairie View A&M,Simmons revived the flagging fortunes of thePanthers, elevating them to prime contenderstatus in the rugged SWAC Western Division, which featured perennial Black Collegeheavyweights, Grambling State and SouthernUniversity.

Simmons fashioned a 21-11 overall worksheet, and a 19-6 league record, highlighted by an 8-2 debut campaign in 2015, which included an8-1 runnerup finish in the Division to eventualdivision champion Grambling State, afterdropping a sizzling 70-54 wild west shootoutin the State Fair Classic in Dallas, Texas.

In 2015, the Panthers were the highest-scoringFootball Championship Subdivision (FCS)team in the nation in 2015, averaging 44.9points per game. The Panthers scored at 38points or more nine times, including three 40-point games, and four 50-point games.

PVAMU also led the SWAC total offense (487.5ypg/6th NCAA), passing offense (278.0 ypg/15th NCAA), passing efficiency (152.0/10thNCAA), and ranked second in rushing offense(206.5 ypg/21st NCAA).Considered one of the most creative andinnovative offensive minds in the collegiategame today, Simmons took the Prairie Viewjob in December of 2015, after a scintillatingrun as offensive coordinator at Alcorn (Miss.)

State University.

Simmons worked three seasons at AlcornState (2012-14) under Jay Hopson (now headcoach at Southern Miss), and immediatelyhelped initiate a meteoric revival of a proudBraves gridiron program, which had won justtwo (2) games the previous season.

Starting a true freshman quarterback andwithout spring practice, the Braves finishedwith a 4–7 record, highlighted by wins overprevious Southwestern Athletic Conference(SWAC) champion Grambling State and #1ranked Alabama A&M.

The 2013 season saw the Braves andSimmons’ offense finish 9–3 overall (7–2 in theSWAC) and ranked #5 in the final SBN BlackCollege Football Poll (its highest rankingsince 1984).

Alcorn running back Arnold Walker had acareer year in 2013, leading the conferencein rushing (1,191 yards) and touchdowns (16),becoming the school’s all-time leadingrusher, and earning SWAC Co-OffensivePlayer of the Year honors. Simmons’ offensefinished 2013 ranked in the Top 25 nationallyin Total Offense, Rushing Offense, and Scor-ing Offense.

The 2014 campaign was an even better yearfor Simmons and the Braves, as they won theSouthwestern Athletic Conference Champi-onship over Southern University, as well asbeing named Black College National Cham-pions.

The Braves offense set many records thatseason, finishing second nationally in ScoringOffense, 8th in Total Offense, and 4th in Rush-ing Offense.

Quarterback John Gibbs, Jr, was selected as

SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year andBlack College Player of the Year, givingSimmons two consecutive Player of the Yearselections.

Prior to his successful run at Alcorn, Simmons’first full-time work as an assistant coach onthe college level came at Middle TennesseeState University in Murfreesboro (2007-11),under head coach Rick Stockstill, who re-cruited Simmons to Clemson.

After three seasons as the running backscoach at MTSU, Simmons was promoted toPass Game Coordinator. The following sea-son, he was promoted to Offensive Coordina-tor. By the age of 30, he was one of the young-est coordinators at the FBS level.

During his time as Offensive Coordinator(2011), the Blue Raiders were ranked 20thnationally in Total Offense, while leading theSun Belt Conference in Total Offense, RushingOffense, and Third Down Conversion Percent-age, and ranking second in Passing Offense.

Simmons began his coaching career in 2005at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, FL,where he coached the quarterbacks and wasalso the Passing Game Coordinator.

There he had the opportunity to coach formerNFL and USF quarterback B.J. Daniels. Afterone season, he was brought back to his almamater Clemson as a Graduate AssistantCoach working with the quarterbacks in2006.

SIMMONS AS AN ATHLETESimmons had a highly distinguished prepcareer at Quincy’s James Shanks High School, earning All-American honors as a quarter-back (ranked #10 quarterback nationally),after leading the Tigers to their first districtchampionship in 22 years, and being named

He received over 25 scholarship offers, sign-ing with Clemson, where he lettered threeyears (2000–2002), participating in four bowlgames (Peach, Gator, Humanitarian, andTangerine).

Simmons earned his Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Services (Sports) Marketing fromClemson in the spring of 2002, just 3 yearsafter he enrolled, which is the fastest anyfootball player has ever graduated from theuniversity.

He initially transferred to Florida A&M Univer-sity in Tallahassee, FL for his senior season, but after being deemed ineligible to competebecause FAMU was in provisional status as aDivision I-A (now FBS) program, he enrolledat The Citadel (S.C.), where he garnered AllSouthern Conference First Team honors afterleading the Bulldogs to a 6–6 record (the first

non-losing season in 10 years).

Under Simmons’ leadership, The Citadel alsoaccomplished a feat that had only been done byMarshall University, which was defeat toFurman, Appalachian State, and Georgia South-ern in the same season.

After Simmons’ college career, he played oneseason of Arena Football in the United IndoorFootball League for the Sioux City Bandits.

TheRattlers drew 20,262 fans for their September1 home opener against Fort Valley State, andattracted 26,045 fans for their homecomingbout against Norfolk State (10-6-18)….

Preseason Notes, Briefs And Shortsback, who also played outfield for the MEACchampion Rattler Baseball team…. Johnathan,a freshman kicker, will join a talented group ofRattler kickers in 2019, with an eye on becom-ing the heir apparent to five-year senior YahiaAly.

Stanley eyes career mark, win pla-teau: Senior quarterback Ryan Stanley is justthe fifth FAMU quarterback to pass for 6,000yards, and he needs just a little over 1,300more to become the school’s all-time passingleader (see Page 2)…. But more than thecareer record, Stanley is gunning to be thefirst Rattler quarterback lead to FAMU toback-to-back winning seasons for the firsttime since Curtis Pulley sparked the Rattlersto winning finishes in 2008 (9-3) and 2009 (8-3).

X-Man, Hunter top receivinggroup: The dynamic duo of Xavier Smith,a.k.a. The X-Man, and veteran Chad Hunter, emerged last season as a 1-2 punch thatopened up the passing lanes for Ryan Stanley, while lighting up the scoreboard and cuttingopposing defenses to ribbons…. Smith fin-ished with 727 yards on 52 catches and fourscores, but his breakaway speed led to a trioof 100-yard receiving games, making him theperfect wingman for the mercurial Hunter, whose daring exploits as the Stanley’s toptarget, saw him increasingly draw doublecoverages…. The Rattlers are no two-manshow, with senior Marcus Williams, and a trioof dangerous performers in Bishop Bonnett,Ricky Henrilus and Azende Rey coming out ofthe backfield.

The Return of the ground game:Known for many years prior to the advent ofHall of Fame coach Billy Joe’s Gulf Coast Of-fense (1994-2004), as a running back factory, the Rattlers showed signs of returning to someof those scorched earth tendencies, as coach

Willie Simmons and his staff unleashed a bevyof talented runners that seemed to have noend…. JUCO transfer Deshawn Smithemerged from the war of attrition that besetthe Rattler running backs to rush for a seasonhigh 676 yards and four scores, averaging 6.7yards per carry… He edged out BishopBonnett, a human flash of a runner and re-ceiver, who ran for 567 yards and three scores, averaging a team-best 7.2 yards per carry…That pair eased the load on the 2017 rushingking, Ricky Henrilus, who battled injuries butstill ran for 260 yards and a pair of scores….Look for the incredible depth the Rattlershave in the backfield to show itself this fall, asa number of ace runners are spoiling to getinto the fight.

O-Line key to offensive resurgence:The first year of a new offensive scheme canbe an up-and-down affair at times, but coachWillie Simmons’ read option attack showedgreat signs of its’ explosive potential in2018…. With all the skill players getting thescheme down, it was up to the front men – theoffensive line to keep Stanley protected andopen holes for the fleet running backs…. Thisyear’s line group will be a mix of young and asprinkling of veterans, led by a pair All-MEACcandidates, sophomore center BryanCrawford, a 6-2, 300-pounder, and juniorguard Keenan Forbes, a 6-3, 325 meanhombre…. Ten of the 16 offensive line pros-pects are underclassmen, which actuallybodes well for FAMU, as quite a few sawcrucial playing time last year.

Faddoul tops in nation, in class-room: Chris Faddoul became well-knownnationally as an extraordinary punter….. TheWesley Chapel native led Division I FCS witha scintillating 46.8 yards average, holdingdown the nation’s top spot from mid Septem-ber through season’s end…. He even tookover kickoff chores with four games left,

Preseason Notes, Briefs And Shortsaveraging 63 yards per kickoff…. But thepersonable performer was an ace in the class-room, turning in a perfect 4.0 grade pointaverage in both the Fall and Spring semes-ters… Rattler fans can’t wait to see what hedoes for an encore – and he’s got two yearsleft!!!

Aly granted additional year: Record-settingplacekicker Yahia Aly was granted anotheryear of eligibility by the NCAA after an ap-peal, which is great news for the Rattlers, whoare hopeful the California native will continuehis upward trend from last year…. Aly wassecond in the MEAC in overall scoring with 76points, and tops in the MEAC in kick scoring, booting 15 of 22 field goals, and knockingthrough 31 of 33 points after…. He set a single-game school record with six field goals in sixtries against Fort Valley State in the 2018 sea-son opener.

Linebacker combo could key de-fense: FAMU returns their top two tacklers –linebackers Elijah Richardson and DerrickMayweather – and this duo is one of theleague’s most lethal performers…. SeniorRichardson actually led the MEAC in tackles(7.5 per game), finishing with 75 total stops innine games, recording four games with 10 ormore tackles, while junior Mayweather, theTexas Terror, had 70 total stops (39 solos),getting off to a rousing start in the seasonopener with 12 tackles against Fort ValleyState.

Crutchfield and Moore to anchorfront: The Rattler Defense was much im-proved over previous seasons as evidencedby their 17-0 homecoming shutout of NorfolkState; a stifling performance in a 55-14 crushjob at NCCU, and their holding Morgan Stateto a mere three points in a 38-3 runaway late inOctober….FAMU lost a key lineman in AntonioMiller, who was a fine an edge rusher as the

Rattlers have had in years, but two key linereturnees should provide major spark for theOrange and Green… Junior end JoshuaCrutchfield (6-2, 220) recorded 10 tackles forloss and a pair of QB sacks to go with his 35total tackles, while senior end DemontreMoore (6-3, 295) had 25 tackles, 4.5 for lossand 2.0 sacks…. The line group is an interest-ing mix of underclassmen and veterans whichshould make for interesting camp battlesleading up to the season.

Rattler secondary will be tough:The Rattler Secondary will likely continue its’penchant for ball hawking and teeth rattlinghits in 2019, as Associate Head Coach BillyRolle, a FAMU Hall of Fame safety in the 1980s,will take more of a leading role in overseeingthe deep four group…. Blessed with a bevy ofunderclassmen and veterans, the Rattler aceswill be led by graduate safety Terry Jefferson, who finished with 57 tackles 3.5 tackles forloss and 2.0 sacks, and sophomore cornerHerman Jackson, whose play elevated as theyear went on, with 31 total tackles, one inter-ception, and a 55-yard fumble return for a TDwhich proved crucial in the Rattlers’ 22-21upset of North Carolina A&T last year.

The MEAC At 48 Notes: The Mid-EasternAthletic Conference kicks off its’ 48th year ofoperation this fall, and the feature of thefootball competition will be a return to aneight-game format in which all teams playone another for the first time since the early2000s…. When Savannah State and NorthCarolina Central joined the conference, theleague went to a rotating schedule, wheresome teams would roll off schedules for twoyears or more…. The benefit of the nine-teamfootball league means no co-champions….The league will live stream its’ home gamesthrough ESPN3.com for the second straightyear, and will become one of the first NCAADivision I FCS conferences to institute instant

Bragg Memorial StadiumCompleted in 1957, Bragg MemorialStadium is the venerable home ofFlorida A&M University Football.

Located on the westrn edge of theFAMU campus, the current stadiumis the second incarnation of BraggStadium on campus, replacing theoriginal venue which was located onthe hill behind the current JakeGaither Athletic Center, which fea-tures the Pete Griffin Track.

Both facilities were named in honorof the First Family of Rattler Football,Jubie B. Bragg, the school’s first headcoach and athletic director, and hisson, Eugene Bragg, who served threeseasons as head coach in the mid1920s before passing away due toillness.

When the present facility was com-pleted in 1957, it seated 13,500 fanswith grandstands arrayed around adirt track and a natural grass field.

In the 1970’s, home attendance be-gan to outgrow the original design, even with end zone bleachers, forc-ing FAMU to play its’ bigger homegames at nearby Doak CampbellStadium at Florida State.

But in 1980, the stadium reached theend of its’ useful life and the stateengineers condemmed Bragg forcing

the Rattlers to play their entire 1980home schedule at Florida State, withseveral games being played on Fri-day nights.

The Florida Legislature movedquickly during the fall of 1980, ap-proving a $500,000 appropriationpackage to renovate and expandBragg Stadium.

By opening day 1981, the renovationof the original structure was com-plete, and the expansion phase toincrease the capacity to 25,500 wasfinished for the first game of the 1982season.

The reboot of Bragg Stadium wascomplete in 1983, when theGalimore-Powell Field House, com-plete with offices, conference room, lockerooms, training room, equip-ment and weight rooms opened dur-ing the summer.

Last summer (2018), the universityspent just over $700,000 to replacethe grass field in the stadium, withthe latest in artificial turf.

Couple that new front yard, withpending upgrades to the venuewithin the next two years, Bragg Me-morial Stadium should get a newlease on life good for another decadeor more at least.
