TODAY'S GAME/by Roosevelt Wilson

NOW Y OU SEE NOW YOU DON'T

Alabama A &M has a lot of tricks up its sleeve and will be out toprove to the Rattlers that the hand is quicker than the eye.

At one point in the season peo-ple were wondering just howgood was Florida A&M. TheRattlers since that time haveanswered that question but face ateam tonight of a similar unknownquantity.

Alabama A&M has been an upand down team, showingbrilliance one week and disap-pointment the next. The Rattlersthemselves don't know exactlyhow the Bulldogs will play thisone and they are prepared for theworse.

Experience is a great teacherand many FAMU followersremember the last time these twoteams met. It was in Huntsville,Ala., and Florida A&M had neverloss to Alabama A&M.

On this night, though, historywas to take a turn for the worse asfar as the Rattlers were concern-ed.

It was in 1971 and FAMU wentinto the game unbeaten after twogames. The Bulldogs jumped allover the Rattlers and came upwith 14 points. They then threw

up a stubborn defense and foughtoff a FAMU rally to take the game,14-13.

That meeting was the last untilnow for these two teams and theRattlers did not have anotherchance to seek their revenge. Theplayers now who remember thatgame were freshmen andprobably none even made the tripto Huntsville on that fatefulweekend.

They were Rattlers, though, and a loss is a loss so they will beout to avange that defeat tonight.Just how successful they will bewill depend upon Alabama A&M.

If the Bulldogs have one of thekinds of games they're capable ofplaying, the Rattlers are going tobe in for the fight of their livesbecause Alabama A&M is the kindof team that will come after youhard and strong, then throw insome trick plays to catch you offguard.

Rattler head coach Rudy Hub-bard and defensive coordinatorFred Goldsmith have beenscratching their heads trying tofigure out how to gear a defensefor a team that will throweverything including the kitchensink at its opponents.

The fan who likes the razzle-dazzle play, the unorthodox for-mation, the end arounds, reverses, halfback options, dipsy-doodles, flea-flickers, statue oflibertys, should get his money'sworth tonight. Alabama A&M willprobably use a little of them all.

-3-

As for the Rattlers, they hope tostrike fast and early and then holdonto the grass because theBulldogs will be coming fromevery direction.

A LOOK AT1971

Alabama A&M 14, FAMU 13Oct. 9 at Huntsville, Ala.

The odds finally caught up with theRattlers against Alabama A&M.

FAMU had never lost to Alabama

A&M in football but this night there wasto be a change.

After noting a flaw in the Rattlers'

punting game the Bulldogs capitalizedby blocking the first punt attempt andcovering it in the end zone for a TD totake a 7-6 lead.

In the end though, it was to be a sadtale for the Rattlers as they barelymissed a field goal in the waning seconds

and had to absorb a 14-13 defeat.

Hubbard, who also played for Woody Hayes'Buckeyes, was selected from a list of over 40applicants for the job of replacing Jim Williamsand accepting the challenge of returning theRattlers to football prominence.

In making the announcement at a press con-ference, FAMU President B. L. Perry, Jr., saidHubbard "has the confidence, qualifications andoackground to turn around our football programand put it back on top. In addition to having out-standing football credentials, he also is a masterrecruiter and we all know how importantrecruiting is today."

Hubbard personally recruited ArchieGriffin,Cornelius Green and John Hicks for Ohio State.Griffin was the Big Ten's Most Valuable Playerand Green was the MVP in the Rose Bowl. Hicks,of course, was the winner of the Outland andLombardi trophies.

An All-Conference and All-County performerin high school basketball and football for threeyears, Hubbard was player of the year as afreshman at Ohio State.

A knee injury sidelined the running back forhis entire sophomore year and he never com-pletely recovered until his senior year when heaveraged 5.3 yards per carry, scored threetouchdowns, caught 13 passes for 98 yards andaveraged 17.1 yards per attempt on kickoffreturns.

Hubbard was drafted by Montreal of theCanadian Football League in 1968 but forewent aprofessional football career when he was offereda job as backfield coach for Ohio State. Hubbardsaid he wanted someday someday to become ahead coach and "I felt my chances wer far greateras an assistant to Coach Hayes than chancing aprofessional football career."

He joined the Buckeye staff in 1968 and thatyear Ohio State won the national championship. He has coached Jim Otis, Leo Hayden and JohnBrockington, all now prominent figures in theNational Football League.

"I am very pleased with his qualifications, youth and willingness to accept the challenge torebuild our football program," said FAMU athleticdirector Hansel Tookes, who also served on theselection committee that recommended hubbardto President Perry.

Hubbard hails from Hubbard, Ohio, where heattended Hubbard High School (the names aremere coincidence). He was recruited by over 60colleges before finally settling on Ohio State.

He and his wife, Belinda, are expecting theirfirst child in a few months.

ONENOBLE RATTLERS MISSING

by Roosevelt Wilson

Sylvester V/.,liams, who by nowwould have been among the topRattler runners of the season, wasmore than just a fine footballplayer. He also was an outstan-ding young man.

His teammates and coachesaffectionately called him "Rev,"short for Reverend. Williams, yousee, was a young man of strongreligious convictions and asincere concern for his fellowman.

He had become somewhat ofthe unofficial team chaplain andhe was outspoken about hisreligious beliefs.

It took a lot of nerve to be as

open about his religion asWilliams was, especially whenone considers that he was a

member of a football team, andespeciai;y when one considersthat football teams, thoughwrongly so, have beenstereot ped as being made up ofmostly physical brutes who thriveon violence with little compassionfor others.

This Florida A&M football teamdid not make fun at SylvesterWilliams. Each player and coachrespected him for his beliefs andoften found themselves watchingtheir language when "Rev" wasaround.

They respected him becausethey knew he was sincere. Theyknew he was not just a showoff ora windblown evangelist. Thecountry today has beenproliferated by the overnight do-gooders and holier-than-thous

who suddenly appear on thescene with the answer to all ofman's problems.

Somehow though, through allthe din and ado, one can tell whensomeone is for real. The Rattlersknew Sylvester Williams was forreal.

On Sunday, September 2,Williams had visited TallahasseeMemorial Hospital, as he haddone many times before, to visitwith and pray for the sick. Almistexactly 24 hours later he hadcollapsed on the practice fieldand died.

Even today Sylvester Williamsis still missed by the Rattlers. Oc-casionally, when one is inclinedto swear, he unconsciously looksaround to see if "Rev" is anywherenearby.

the one with the best picture, and as the one service technicians would buy for themselves today. Survey details on request.
