NEXT MEETING
January 8, 2019
Kay’s Bar-B-Q, 1525 King St (SR 520), Cocoa
Dinner from menu at 5:30; Meeting at 6:30
CHRISTMAS PARTY: A special thank you to Steve and Debbie Phelps for once again opening their home for our Christmas party.
We couldn’t have had a more lovely location. We were so happy to see Debbie be rid of her wheelchair and
enjoying the party more this year.
Our thanks to Glenn McCallister for leading the evening with a prayer prior to our meal and for
remembering members who passed in 2017 and 2018.
Thanks also to Alex Montminy for preparing the two meat dishes and to everyone for bringing the delicious
covered dishes and desserts.
The gift exchange with “Santa” (Dave Deithorn) was a lot of fun—as usual. Dave plays the part to the hilt
and enjoys every minute of it as do we. We didn’t have very many steals though and we had a “Snafu” on
the gifts which left one lady without a “Lady” present. The directions will be made clearer before the next
party.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Please try to attend the February meeting to vote for the 2019 Officers; so give some thought about
volunteering for a position next year and giving someone else a break. If you are a newer member, it’s a
good way to meet the other members.
FISHING/WATER REPORTS: The weather has still not been our fishing friend lately—cold, windy and lowering water levels are putting
more challenges out there. Even central Florida lakes and Lake Okeechobee are not doing well. Some of
the guys fished Holiday Park in early December and did extremely well though. Unfortunately, that was not
a tournament. If any of you have found productivity where you’ve been fishing, be sure to let Doug Cheney
or Frank Adams know.
Fishing the tournament at Lake Washington on December 15 was hit and miss, although Ned Scheerhorn
managed to find a good location for Specks. The water was okay, but the wind and rain put a damper on
things.
LICENSE PLATES: Club license plates are still available for $5 each. To get one see
Alex Montminy at one of the meetings.
MEMBERS: The sad part of the Christmas party was thinking back on the number of members and spouses of members
we missed in the last few years either from death or illness. With the numbers dwindling as our members
age, we need to put a priority next year to rebuild our membership. Maybe we can began a new youth
program as we had in the past. Keep this in mind over the holidays and let’s talk about it in 2019.
NEXT MEETING: The next regular meeting will be at Kay’s BBQ on January 8 at our usual time. We are planning to have fly
tying sessions in 2019—possibly following our regular meeting on the same night. Details will be decided
at the January meeting.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE: The Nominating Committee (3 people other than present officers) will be selected in January to come up
with a slate of Officers for 2019. Nominees will be presented at the February meeting for acceptance by
members present. If you would like to put your name in nomination, please let a member of the committee
know in January. Being an officer is a good way to become better acquainted with the membership.
ROSTER: The Roster is updated monthly effective the date of the meeting. The Roster is enclosed with the newsletter.
If you lose it and need another copy, contact Betty Brown. As changes will take place after the first of the
year, we want to be sure you receive that information—so PLEASE check the Roster every month to be sure
your information is correct—especially important is your phone number and email address.

WEBSITE: www.floridaflyrodclub.com – The Website is now up to date. Betty will send an email to the members if the next tournament is not on the
website several days before that tournament. You can also find locations and directions for places to stay on
the website. If you find any information lacking or inaccurate, contact Tom Heitpas as soon as possible.
WEIGH-IN REMINDERS:
1. Panfish must be 7” minimum.
2. Exotics, such as Mayan Cichlids, Oscars, Peacock Bass, Shad and Pickerel shall not be
counted as Panfish. They are counted as “Other”.
3. A maximum of 20 fish, including a maximum of 5 Bass, can be weighed. You are allowed to
keep only 1 Bass over 16”.
4. If you catch a fish in a tournament that may possibly be considered a “Big Fish” for the year,
please be sure to take a horizontal picture of you with the fish in front of you and be sure to
have that fish weighed separately for our records. If you don’t have a camera or phone to
take photos, please have the Weigh Master record it and get someone to take the photo and
forward it to Betty Brown.
5. In a buddy tournament each angler may keep no more than one bass over 16”. That/those
bass count in the club’s 5 bass per boat limit.
YOU NEED TO KNOW: 1. Fly tying classes are planned to begin after the first of the year. Details will be in the January
newsletter.
2. There is only one more tournament in the 2018 season. It will be January 19 and may be a buddy
tournament inasmuch as the Lake Washington tournament did not carry the “buddy” when
transferred from Lake Poinsett. Even if you do not have a chance to win top prizes, you could
catch a Big Fish award.
MEMBERS & FAMILIES: Betty Brown will be in rehab for several months to repair a torn rotator cuff in her left shoulder during
which time she may not be able to operate her boat (stick steering on left) or fish. Luckily she has
volunteers to keep it moving. She also had a head injury on Nov 24 with a lot of bleeding; but, thankfully,
no concussion. She advises everyone who parks in a Handicap parking spot to watch out for those parking
blocks so you don’t trip over them and go head on into the steel pipe holding the sign.
Martha Wells thanks everyone for their sympathy and their personal donations and the club donation to the
Sharing Center in Henry’s memory.

This rod/reel combo was
temporarily possessed by Bob
Goforth, Bill Sargent and Bob
Smithwick before the last number
was called. That number belonged
to none other than “Santa” who
took no time thinking about
stealing it. When asked if that
made him a naughty boy? He
answered with a wink of his eye
“Ho! Ho! Ho! Are you kidding?”
Steve Phelps is not watching the
clock to scoot everyone out the door.
He is actually holding onto his gift--a
clock that has a fly attached at each
hour and he is obviously proud of his
possession.
Debbie Phelps was smiling all night.
“Look guys. No wheels.” Her only
wheels these days are the two on her
bike. Glad to see you back in action
Debbie.
“Would you believe Steve & Debbie
modified their house just so we could
party indoors?” Nah, we didn’t
think so either; but, on this cold
night, we were glad they did it for
whatever the reason.

Hope Santa makes it to your house this year.
