Floss Spelling Pattern

Floss is a spelling pattern to follow for some closed

syllable words. Knowing the characteristics will not affect reading the words, but will

help you spell them accurately.

What’s the system?

staff small whiff knell

• One syllable word

• Short vowel sound

• Followed by f, l, or s

• Double the f, l, or s
