Characteristics The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza

viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Influenza is characterised by fever, myalgia, headache and pharyngitis.

In addition there may be cough and in severe cases, prostration.

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms Symptoms of influenza can start quite suddenly one to two days

after infection. Usually the first symptoms are chills or a chilly sensation. Fever is also common early in the infection, with body

temperatures ranging from 100 to 103 °F Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear

infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

Causes Three main types of influenza viruses can cause the flu.

Types A and B cause the yearly outbreaks. Type C leads to mild, random cases.

A or B.

Prevention The influenza vaccine is recommended by the WHO for high-risk groups,
