The music was all Byard’s, played lovingly and a bit loosely...Most of the songs in the first set were fine examples of standard form gone just slightly haywire. The absence of a pianist in the group is good strategy...

OTHER PROJECTS
Yard Byard: The Jaki Byard Project features Jamie Baum - flutes, Adam Kolker - sax/clarinets, Jerome Harris - guitar, Essiet Essiet - bass and George Schuller - drums. These long-time friends and fellow New England Conservatory alumni teamed up in 2010 to pool several of former teacher Jaki Byard’s old charts, dust them off, and bring them back to life. This cooperative group’s highly anticipated CD, Inch By Inch on Gunther Schuller’s GM Recordings, came out in 2014 receiving four stars from DownBeat. Highlight performances include the Kennedy
Center’s KC Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Lincoln Center Jazz and the WPI Jaki Byard Symposium.
In addition to her Septet+ and Short Stories bands, Baum has continually performed with her own Quartet (or Quintet) throughout her career as a jazz soloist using the traditional jazz format of horn player, piano, bass and drums. The music ranges from arrangements of classic and modern jazz tunes to originals, and depending on the particularly type of performance and venue size, Jamie will often add a fifth musician for the quintet. Recent performances include the 2016 Guimaraes Jazz Festival (Portugal), JazzMandu Festival (Nepal), Bogui (Madrid), Nova Jazz
Cava (Spain), Pizza Express & Vortex (London), Blue Whale (LA), Torino Jazz Club (Italy), The Rex (Toronto), Birdland (NYC), etc.
THE JAMIE BAUM QUARTET/QUINTET
JAMIE BAUM AND SHORT STORIES
Ms. Baum, known for her award-winning Septet+ featuring her global-influenced and long-form compositions, formed Short Stories to compliment and expand her palette. With an emphasis on improvisation, her inspiration came from the short but eloquent compositions by such jazz icons as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Combined with the excitement and drive of the modern “jazz standard”,
Baum strives to compose “short stories” that set the tone for this unique instrumentation and top-flight group of musicians.
Short Stories debuted in January, 2015, as part of Jazz Resolutions 2015 during the NYC APAP/Winter JazzFest, and was filmed by the French Network Mezzo/Kidem for broadcast. Performances have included NYC’s Jazz Gallery, Cornelia St. Cafe, St. Peter’s “Jazz on The Plaza” and
tours in the US and Canada.
Short Stories, with a core quartet and recurring guests creating a modular group and concept, features Andy Milne, Joe Martin and Jeff Hirshfield with rotating members harmonica wizard Gregoire Maret, guitarists Gilad Hekselman and Nir Felder, and saxophonist Ben Wendel.
Jamie Baum, a New York City-based flutist, makes a solid contribution to post-bop on In This Life....a memorable outing as both soloist and composer.
Alex HendersonJAZZ INSIDE MAGAZINE
The Jamie Baum Septet+ was clearly a group of special shape and sound. Having seen this remarkable group at the North Sea Jazz Festival, it was even more remarkable that this group was not programmed by other European festivals. The way Baum transformed and subtly inscribed characteristics of Khan's music into her ensemble's music appeared to be of a distinguished quality...without ever becoming dominant or rendering the music overtly exotic (or) imitative. The intriguing entanglement of spare pellucidity, intense rhythmical undercurrent and inner perpetual rotation brought to mind the music of Gil Evans. Besides Baum's great blending of voices in the collective sound of the ensemble...there were significant moments for (all of the) players, all demonstrating the remarkably strong intercommunion that this group has achieved. It was a stroke of luck that the programmers
of the festival not only recognized the extraordinary quality of the ensemble but also booked it.

On In This Life Baum hybridizes (her) signature style with music inspired by trips to South Asia, especially the music of vocal dynamo Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The highlights are certainly enthralling.

In This Life, a breathtaking new release from Jamie Baum....and a stellar line up....One of those recordings that just launches itself into space and picks up speed as it goes. Outstanding. Highly Recommended.

****1/2, With the leader’s flute nestled in among the hissing brass there is an airy, billowing character in the orchestrations that have a faint echo of Gill Evans at his most sensual...Although difficult to single out a highlight, such is the consistently high standard of execution throughout...Baum takes few solos, as if she knows full well that the ensemble is effectively
her voice. Such artistic maturity serves to potently enhance the input of both leader and able accompanists.

On In This Life...it's hard to grasp all of this musical activity in one listen. Wherever you turn your ear, though, something remarkable is happening.

****1/2, Appearing with her septet at the Jazz Standard...in support of In This Life, an astonishing and beautiful album...a group that she’s remarkably kept assembled for 14 years, making original music that’s warmly
accessible and unerringly performed.

...on a cold night in January this reviewer decided to experience the Jamie Baum Septet at Joe’s Pub. It was nothing short of extraordinary. Each tune was gripping and played to perfection. The best compliment that can be given to such compositional creativity is that all concept of the passage of time was lost...I had been transported...for what seemed like
precious few moments, but it was enough to leave me breathless and wanting more.
