Thank you for helping us to commemorate our 30th birthday in grand style. During the 2011-2012 season you shared your stories, gave generously, participated in the arts, and celebrated with us.
The year began with a dream of replacing our 60-year-old worn seats and revitalizing our theater. Thanks to our extraordinary community, one year later we closed the season with a successful $2.2 million campaign and a construction project in place. Coupled with these amazing results were the memories that you shared with us throughout the year, about the significance of the Flynn in your life and our community.
In addition to a busy campaign and planning for a renovation, we again presented a rich season filled with an extraordinary array of performers that included Broadway hits like Mamma Mia, nationally-recognized
dance companies such as Paul Taylor and Suzanne Farrell, iconic performers like Bernadette Peters, and much more. The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival was also a great success, and we continued our commitment to arts education by serving over 50,000 students in schools and our community. We bid a fond farewell to Arnie Malina and welcomed Steve MacQueen, our new artistic director.
Of course, we also left time to celebrate with all of you. In May, we held our 30th Birthday Bash, a community event that brought together many of our arts partners for an evening of song and dance as we recognized our history as Vermont’s premier performing arts center and officially ended our Stand Up for the Flynn: Take a Seat campaign.
The success of our year is due in large part to our Flynn family. Your time, talents, and generosity have set the stage for our next 30 years. On behalf of the Flynn Board, I thank you for all your contributions and commitments that make the Flynn what it is and well-prepare us for the future.”
A Message from the Chairman of the Board Peter Erly
“I was six months pregnant, standing in the back of a sold out Mamma Mia!, and my baby danced in utero the entire show. Now he’s out and has already
attended his first student matinee and we’re taking a FlynnArts class together. Lowell will forever be a Flynn baby!” Suzanne L. Marchelewicz, FlynnArts Coordinator
112,690 attendees
“From local to international, the variety of artists and presentations in FlynnSpace never ceases to amaze me.” Brian Johnson, FlynnSpace Manager
“The talented Dianne Reeves sang her heart out, Trombone Shorty rocked the waterfront, and thousands of people danced on Church Street. I love how the festival has something for everyone; whether you enjoy listening as you stroll down Church Street, grooving at the Waterfront Tent, hearing legends and emerging talent at the Flynn, or delving deep into history through lectures and workshops.” Linda Little, Burlington Discover Jazz Festival Managing Director

Community Partners
“It was wonderful to see a Vermont artist-initiated organization, Cradle to Grave Arts, join forces with the Flynn to present Hannah Dennison’s new
piece, Dear Pina, and even more inspiring to see the actual performance at a very special Vermont landmark, the Shelburne Farms Breeding Barn.” Karen Powell, Box Office Supervisor
143 performances
64,564 attendees
“The power of the community coming together to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support recovery from Tropical Storm Irene, with the Phish and Grace Potter concerts, is something I’ll never forget.” Chelsea Lafayette, Programming Manager
“I loved seeing the story of Jason and the Argonauts come to life in a fresh and authentic way for a house full of students last year. The inventive production
allowed students to experience moving and timeless themes and see some great theater.” Frances Binder, Student Matinee Coordinator
$16,230 in scholarships awarded
“Our Show Choir program exploded from one group of teens in its first year to four groups (Juniors, Teens, Select Teens, and Adults)
in 2011-12. It was a joy to be able to welcome so many eager musical theater students and witness the growth of their skills, confidence, and community bonds.” Christina Weakland, Director of Education
Our 30th Birthday Bash
In May, the Flynn celebrated its 30th birthday as Vermont’s premier performing arts center. Local community arts partners donated their time and talent to create a fun-filled evening that included a dance party on the MainStage. The night included a welcome by Burlington Taiko, a make your own Ben and Jerry’s sundae bar, and a pizza party after the performance. The evening also marked the close of our successful Stand Up for the Flynn: Take a Seat campaign.
The year began with a fabulous golf tournament and elegant onstage dinner and ended with our annual garden tour. During the year, we also partnered with Burlington City Arts on a print benefit event in celebration of our 30th anniversaries and welcomed spring with our popular home and garden auction. Thanks to all the volunteers and donors!
Benefit Events
In addition, we enjoyed wonderful artist receptions with Darlene Love, Bernadette Peters, and Joan Rivers.
