FMQ13 ALBUM REPORT December 3, 1982 BILL HARD, Editor

SAMMY HAGAR, "THREE LOCK BOX", GEFFEN As noted in our single comments last week, what Sammy needed was to move it more to the middle without leaving his core behind - mission accomplished. "Your Love" is perfectly positioned, with instant Top 40 and album acceptance (debuts #21) on the Song Index. "Remember The Hero" has that tremendous Mike Reno/Loverboy tie in. We also recommend "Never Give Up", "I Don't Need Love" and "Growing Up".

    Easy Choice

There's quite a buzz and I'm sure about this one"...Dave Kane, WCMF, "The time for this band is now! It's a must play record! If you want great modern music, you're not going to find anything better"...The Doctor, WYFE, "Duran Duran's sound lies somewhere between the wide appeal of 'Steppin' Out' by Joe Jackson and 'Words' by Missing Persons. It fills that gap quite nicely"...Stew Schantz, WPDH, "We have increased rotation on 'Hungry Like The Wolf'. As a matter of fact, we're playing the six minute version. Good phones!". .Susie Austin, WLPX, "'Hungry Like The Wolf' (complete with moans) is fantastic."

NIGHT RANGER, BOARDWALK Week 3 has this potent debut cranking on the afterburners. The strongest Index gainer, 47-28, and a super healthy Metro debut at #29...#2 Most Added with 20 for a 3 week total of 64 adds...Dave Logan, KFOG, "We like to lean on the local angle ard Night Ranger is such a strong record that we can't lose"... The Doctor, WYFE, "Night Ranger sounds better on the radio than I first expected, which is always a pleasant surprise"...Jose Diaz, WBLM, "The Night Ranger Lp, as we all know, is tailor made for radio. 1982 FRIDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK ALBUM REPORT INC TM ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PRINTED AND FIRST PUBLISHED IN U SA

  • CHAIN REACTION C:01111r1I MER)

FOREIGNER, "RECORDS", ATLANTIC The live "Hotblooded" seems to be the radio fave and combining all those hits on one disc sure makes it easier on the jocks (who, me--using filler comments?) #3 Most Added with 17.

    FRANK MARINO, COLUMBIA

We've seen consistent major market add action for several weeks now and now the Index reflects that progress with a #47 debut. Up 40-44 for a Metro Prime Move, too...#5 Most Added with 13, led by KOME, WLPX, KDWB, KRQR, WKLS, and WILS-FM...Douq Podell, WLLZ, "The biggest surprise goes to Frank Marino. If you originally missed this one, go back and check it out. After a week and a half, 'Strange Dreams' is building nicely"...Steve Feinstein, WYSP, "Once I kicked and screamed at the idea of playing Frank Marino. I can't protest now. The record's a smoker, and my mouth is full of the humble pie I'm eating. Let's hear it for the Lifeset method of vinyl resuscitation."

    ENGLISH BEAT, IRS

Now that the major releases have slowed, time to go back and pick up some of the more deserving stuff that got squeezed out by the heavies, and as we've said a number of times, this is a leading candidate for your consideration...#6 Most Added with 11, including WFBQ, WHJY, KRQR, WCMF, and WPYX...Lots of strong comments, too: Art Phillips, KILO, "The perfect combination of pop, soul, and ska is the new single from English Beat. This admittedly took a half dozen listens, but the hook comes through and this should be that perfect 25+ spice that we're constantly searching for"...Jeff Riccio, WHJY, "The tune is great. The sales in town are super, and as a matter of fact, the show was one of the most enjoyable I've attended in quite a while"...Bruce Bond, WZZO, "It's really there. Sure it may take you awhile to hear 'Save It For Later', but it's definitely there"...Bruce Goldsen, WRKI, "I'm adding the English Beat. I'm tired of getting beaten up. 'Save It For Later' is a pleasant sounding track and we've picked up some sales on the record"...Dale Wolter, WMAD, "As someone in this Sheet astutely put it, 'If the band came to town for a show, it would sell out in no time'. And you sure can't say that about a lot of the formula rock bands touring at the present. It took a few listens, but we are very excited about the potential of this excellent album."

KISS, CASABLANCA/POLYGRAM 10 more adds takes the 5 week total to 51 stations--obviously, expect a debut in our next report... New's include: KTXQ, KISS, WSHE, WYSP, WGRQ, WILS-FM, and WHCN...Heaviest on: WSYR, KGON, KZAP, and WLPX.. .1 Love It Loud" is top 5 requested on WLPX, WZXR, WROQ, WPYX, WIMZ, WSYR, WAPI, KZEL, WSKS, KSMB, and KGON...Checklist: 21 of 57 not playing are considering, none dropping, 8 maintaining, and 23 building, including KGON, WKLS, WZXR, WAAF, WOVE, WLPX, KISS, WSHE, WSYR, WIOT, WHCN, and WFYV... Radio Action: Bob 3;Z:tzn:, WICN . "Five vears ago when Kiss was at their peak, their biggest audience was in the 12-16 year old range. Those same people are liù” 17, 19, lq. and right smack dab in the middle of the target demo for most AOR's. We're getting good early reaction to 'I Love It Lc,d 1"... Drake Hall, KTXQ, "We got strong phone calls on Kiss before we even played it, so we think it's worth a shot"...Joanne Peterson, WAPI-FM, "Kiss is pulling in most positive phones. Who would have guessed it?"...Scott Seagraves, KSMB. "Kiss just starting to sell, but giant calls"...Susie Austin, WLPX, "Kiss goes to heavy this week due to audience response."

ROUGH TRADE, BOARDWALK #7 Most Added with 10, including WBCN, WYNF, WKLS, and WIOT, for a grand total of 27 FMQB reporters. "All Touch" leads. Also consider the title track.

WAITRESSES, POLYGRAM It's time to think holiday programming, and "Christmas Wrapping" is the best seasonal rocker we've heard lately--#7 Most Added with 10, including KBPI, WDHA, and WPYX...Already on: WNEW-FM, WXRT, KNAC, and KROQ.

MICHAEL JACKSON, "THRILLER", EPIC As of report deadline, only a handful of our stations had the new Lp in hand, and we still logged in air action on heavies KGB-FM, KBPI, KQRS, and KTXQ...Drake sez, "I don't care if Michael is green, this record makes my pee-pee stand up and salute. I played it on the air, asked for comments, and it's all positive so far. There is no reason on God's earth not to play this record. It's great"... Joe Folger, KQRS, "No guts, no glory. Michael Jackson's on"...Paul Lemieux, WCOZ, "My biggest post Thanksgiving treat was the arrival of 'Thriller'. I never thought Michael would do a straight ahead guitar song, but with Eddie Van Halen's help, it really rocks."

PRETENDERS "BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG", SIRE 15 more for Chrissie's latest, including KAZY, WAPP, KZAP, WMET, KTXQ, and WNOR-FM...Now on 43 FMQB stations...Heaviest on WQBK, WXRT, KNAC, WBRU, KWXL, WPDH, KZEL, and WSKS...A top 5 request item at WQBK, KZEL, WPLR, WMAD, and WDVE...Comments: Ted Utz, WPYX, "For those of you who have discovered the new preppie/trendy, you'll find the Pretenders' Chain Gang' at the top of their list. The masses are just around the corner"...George Bradt, WBRU, "WBRU and local record stores were flooded with calls about this one when we played it as an import, and all that interest has translated into outstanding sales now that the domestic 45 is available. We couldn't have asked for a stronger track"... Also, keep an ear on the flip as noted by WDVE's Ron Nenni, "'My City Was Gone' by the Pretenders is a top 5 request item and debuted #15 in sales."

    ADAM ANT, EPIC

The 19-10 Index gain puts Adam Ant right behind Night Ranger in the major chart move department...Up 25-20 Metro...New: WLLZ, WFBQ, KISS, KAZY, WTUE, and WIQB...Airplay: 57 steady, 6 down, 13 up: WYSP, WNEW-FM, WMET, WAPP, KOME, KGB-FM, KDKB, WWCK, WQDR, WCCC, KZAP, KSMB, and WSKS...Top 10 retail: WCOZ, WMMR, WBAB, WBCN, WPLR, WGRQ, WIOT, WSKS, KLOL, WILS-FM, and WMYK...Top 5 requests: WLPX, WYSP, WZXR, WPLR, WFYV, KISS, WCMF, WGRQ, WKQQ, WMYK, WAQX, WHCN, WAPI, and 8 more...The crusher Checklist: 1 dropping, 10 maintaining, and 64 building...10 of 17 not playing are considering... "Goody Two Shoes" dances up the Song Index into the #2 spotlight.

    PSYCHEDELIC FURS, COLUMBIA

The Furs came on the Metro Chart at 50 last week and claimed the #50 Index slot this report...New: WMET, WYSP, WKLS, WDHA, and KNCN, for a total of 49 adds to date...Increased spins: WSHE , WNEW-FM, KILO, and WQBK..."Love My Way" hits the Top 100 at #63.

    VANDENBERG, ATCO

9 adds (including WAVA, WDVE, WMMR, DC101, and WKLS) bring the FMQB station count to 74 over an 8 week period.. .Up 42-38 Index, 45-43 Metro...Airplay: 38 steady, 1 down, 5 up: KRQR, WAQX, WMAD, KILO, and KSMB...Heaviest Play on WSYR, KGON, WQFM, and KSJO...Radio Action: Ted Burton Jacobsen, KKRQ, "Vandenberg checks in with a future smash in my book. Another believable act from Atco"...Steve Feinstein, WYSP, 1982 was the year that heavy metal discovered the value of a good melody. Vandenberg's 'Burning Heart' is the latest in a line of expertly crafted big ballads a la Scorpions and Def Leppard"..."Burning Heart" is up 37-33.

    ATLANTIC

moves: 7-4 Index, 7-3 Metro...Airplay: 58 steady, 1 down, 16 up, including KZOK, KWK-FM, KSJO, KRQR, KQRS, KGON, KGB-FM, WZXR, and WABX...Top 10 retail: KATT, WTUE, WSKS, KEZY, WCMF, and WMMR...46 max play mentions...Trax: "I Don't Care Anymore" goes 16-9, "Do You Care" follows.

    SCANDAL, COLUMBIA

Holding steady at #49 on the Index, but a Metro underline 47-42..."Goodbye To You" at #48 on the Song Index...A solid add week: WDVE, KOME, WHJY, KLOL, and KAZY...13 Checklist builders include: WMMS, KQAK, WBAB, KQRS, WNEW-FM, KBPI, WHJY, KATT, KISS, WYSP, KTXQ, WILS-FM, and WZZO...Airplay: 24 steady, 3 down, 4 up: KQRS, KRQR, KTXQ, and WYSP.

    GOLDEN EARRING, POLYGRAM

L016-12 Metro, Prime Move 20-14 Index...New: KLOL, KDKB, WBLM, WTUE...Airplay: 63 steady, 2 down, 11 up: WSHE, WLPX, WIYY, WNEW-FM, WBCN, KZOK, KTXQ, KQRS, KDWB, WZXR, and WSYR...Max on: KLOS, KISW, WILS-FM, and WBRU...Heavy play stations include WKLS, WYSP, DC101, KZEW, KYYS, KRQR, KPRI, KPKE, KGON, KGB-FM, WFYV, WHCN, KZAP, and KISS..."Twilight Zone" moves 13-8-5.

ROBERT PLANT, "FAR POST", IMPORT A number of programmers have told us they feel "Far Post" is as strong as anything on the Lp. This week KFOG, KQRS, KLAQ, and 4 more came in, and with a 62-50 underlined move on the Song Index, the single is an obvious candidate for reconsidering.

FRIDA, ATLANTIC A solid week: UP 35-31 Metro. buil Airplay: 43 steady, 4 down, 8 up: KDKB, WRNO, KILO, and KWXL...Heavy 29 maintaining, 8 dropping, 20 buil KTXQ, WILS-FM, and WPYX...The singl

dina 31-30 Index. New: DC101, WABX, KLAQ, WNOR-FM, WKQQ, and WRKI... KTXQ, KQRS, KBPI, KAZY, WQDR, WMJQ, KEZY, WDHA...Max play: WNEW-FM, on WMET, WLLZ, KZOK, WSYR, WPLR, WLAV-FM, and KISS...Checklist: ding, including KGON, WLVQ, KQRS, KDKB, WAPP, KZOK, KBPI, WGRQ, e builds 23-19.

TONY CAREY , ROCSHIRE The marvelous cover graphics kept this one at the bottom of the audition stack for a couple of weeks, but when adds at WYSP, KISS, WILS-FM, WIOT, and more came in, we took a hint and dug it out. Tnithe single "I Won't Be Home Tonight". Excellent multi-format item...From Steve Feinstein, WYSP, "Tony's got himself a vibrant little number. This record is laced with hooks and driven by its punchy, poppy dynamics."

POP-O-PIES ,, 415 When Howie Klein sent along the Ep, the accompanying note said something like "Hey--no pressure guys, this one isn't for airplay--just listen for personal enjoyment"...Well, guess what Howie, you finally get some Chain Reaction ink. We think the A side "Truckin'" version is a scream and would make for perfect novelty programming.

THE MEMBERS, JIVE "Working Girl" doesn't knock you back on first listen, but the hooks do endure, and in the past seven weeks, we've seen action on WXRT, WYSP, KQRS, WMMS, and KROQ...New on: KBPI, KOME, KLAQ, and KBCO.

MOVING PICTURES, NETWORK This hot Australian pop/rock outfit continues to round up credible calls...New on: WMET, WYSP, WHJY, WYFr, KFMQ, WYMX, and WZZO..."What About Me" is the prime cut.

BLOTTO, "METALHEAD", PETER PAN This novelty item did well where programmed, then was more or less rolled over by the big boys. One of the rare tongue-in-cheek offerings in the relatively dry heavy metal genre. Consider for AM-drive.

Radio Action KBPI, DENVER, CO P.D.-PHIL"STRIDEP"ROBINSON: "Michael Brannan, Atlantic and Mike Linehan, Warner Bros., are two of the country's best promo people. If you betray their trust, you deserve a cut-off. And if the national offices hang their locals out to dry and once again screw the stations that do play by the rules, then I guess we'll have to start playing dirty, too. Is this can of worms really worth opening?"

KAZY, DENVER, CO ASST. P.D.-BRUCE WHEELER: "What goes around comes around. We respect our Warner Brothers and Atlantic people for having the integrity to stand behind their principles."

KFMQ, LINCOLN, NB MD.-BOB ROSEL: "Adds: Frank Marino, Moving Pictures, Vandenberg, and Pretenders 12"... What is it about radio that makes us so petty? What is the cause of this boring, degrading, child-like behavior where people in radio feel they must play out their little personal feuds in front of all of us? Either it's bitching about one thing or another, or it's cock-a-doodling about how great the last Book was. This grudge fighting and rooster strutting is fine for kids and roosters, but I, for one, am tired of reading all that crap in these Pages. I feel these Pages can be better utilized by exchanging ideas on radio programming and music and an occasional thank you for a visit or favor. It's my understanding that professionals fight their battles in private or on the field, so let's keep our personal wars out of these Pages and quit boring us. If you've got the guts, why not call your adversaries on the phone and tell them what you think of them directly? Let's show a little class. You got a beef with someone--Tell them, don't tell us. For one, it's the easy way out; and, two, who cares? Now I'd like to tell my wife she's a lousy cook and a poor housekeeper. I mean, let's get on the ball, honey, my time's too valuable to waste it with someone who can't boil a hot dog. Oh, by the way, the latest Husbatron Book shows me with a 12.7 infant-plus rating. That's up 1.3 points from my last Book, making me #1 in my ADI household. And that tops any Book my malt-o-meal mouth predecessor ever had. So there, twinkie teeth... Enuff said on that subject. I think it's time for all of us to go back and look at the music we over-looked these past few weeks. Solid efforts from: Frank Marino, Joni Mitchell, Jack Mack And The Heart Attack, Moving Pictures, Pretenders, and David Lindley, among others. They should be listened to again and be considered for airplay...Finally, thanks to: Max Gronenthal of Jack Mack And The Heart Attack for the phone call."

WYSP,PHILADELPHIA, PA M.D.-STEVE FEINSTEIN: "Robert Plant's 'Far Post' is more than a non-Lp curiosity item. It's for real, a refreshingly rollicking romp of a record, recommended...1982 was the year that heavy metal discovered the value of a good melody. Vandenberg's 'Burning Heart' is the latest in a line of expertly crafted big ballads a la Scorpions and Def Leppard...Once I kicked and screamed at the idea of playing Frank Marino. I can't protest now. The record's a smoker, and my mouth is full of the humble pie I'm eating. Let's hear it for the Lifeset method of vinyl resuscitation...Tony Carey's got himself a vibrant little number with 'I Won't Be Home Tonight'. This record is laced with hooks and driven by its punchy, poppy dynamics. Remember you're hearing it first from the guy who made the Monroes a household name... If McCartney woke up from his middle age musical menopause, he might make records as spirited and sprightly as Squeeze's swell swan song 'Annie Get Your Gun'. Wouldn't the world be a less lonely place if there were more singles 45 and under.. .Big jumps in sales for: Golden Earring and The Fixx...Keep an eye out for Philly's favorite son Robert Hazard and his Ep, set to arrive as you read this...Attention shoppers: This is your last reminder to call A&M Canada for the Payolas 'Soldier' 45...Thanks to Terry Meiners and Mike Bone for providing the comic relief and at the same time a sense of proportion in their comments... Time to climb up on my high horse and raise my voice in protest of the vile these pages have been oozing recently. Enough already with radio folks compaining about record folks (and vice versa). Enough with vain bragging of how your station is more committed to new music than the competition and was first on a certain record. Enough of ragging on consultants. Enough of petty personal attacks on the competition across the street. Let's can the backbiting and use these pages to talk music. (End of sermon)."

WDHA, NORTH JERSEY, GM-BOB LINDER/P.D.-MARK CHERNOFF: "For quite some time we have quietly watched sta-tions boast of their unauthorized early airplay of major new albums. With comments this week, many from Doubleday stations, we feel we must say something. No one operates in a vacuum. All of our actions, to some extent, affect everyone else. Certainly with the present state of the economy, it's more important than ever to help each other. So, it seems inconceivable to see blatant nose thumbing at record compan-ies by many in the radio industry. Like WAPP's framing of their cease and desist order or KPKE's Randy Raley saying 'I am not in this business to please you. I am in this business to win listeners. Therefore we will play a record any way we want, any way we see fit.' Statements like these are an embarrassment to responsible broadcasters. We care a great deal about trust, playing by the rules, and helping others in the music business. When a date and time is set for a special announcement or an album's debut, we feel morally bound to honor the request. Without trust or mutual respect, what's left? An Arbitron number? Who the fuck cares when those selfish actions hurt everyone else. To win fairly is fine. But to gain by stomping on others will only boomerang back in the end. ,.Now, stepping off my soapbox, WDHA's adds this week include: The Furs, Waitresses, Foreigner's Hits (love the cover), and the English Beat (so Michael Plen won't have to mow our grass. By the way Mike, we have a private patch you might enjoy mowing,) But seroiusly, The Beat is worthy of all the promotional push. 'Save It For Later' is the key cut. .,Winter's almost here and it's definitely time for Furs to keep the turntables warm...We've added the Waitresses primarily for the classic 'Christmas Wrapping' but 'Square Pegs' also faired quite well in last week's testing...We had a busy Thanksgiving weekend with 3 parties for over 2500 DHA listeners. Many thanks to John Boulos for Steel Breeze who blew in for a visit prior to their show in Passaic that we hosted... By the way, our NJ rock albumis selling at all locations. It looks so good we're making a t-shirt out of it.

WILS-FM, LANSING, MI P.D.-LES COOK: "Record of the week: Led Zeppelin, all tracks. This is meat and potatoes.. .Duran Duran's 'Hungry Like The Wolf' goes in this week along with ex-Rainbow member Tony Carey. 'I Won't Be Home Tonight' sounds great on the radio stations...We're trying Kiss, and so far no negatives... 'Strange Dreams' from Frank Marino belongs on album radio. 'Try it, you'll like it'...Now, to Jerry Casale. I have my facts straight, pal. I was there. I saw the show and a member of Devo certainly did flip the audience the bird, and bitched about the lights, and I still think you guys need an attitude check. A one-hour and 15 minute show with no opening act and a tantrum instead of an encore for a $11.00 ticket price is not my idea of giving your fans value for your concert dollar. If you forget your fans, they will in turn forget you." KTXQ,DALLAS,TX M.D.-DRAKE HALL: "Michael Jackson is my life. I don't care if he's green. This record makes my pee-pee stand up and salute. I played it on the air, asked for comments, and it's all positive so far. There is no reason on God's earth not to play this record. It's great...This is obviously Sammy's most accessible record to date. If the album rocks like I hear it does, this is homerun city...Increased rotation on the Frida and on Patti and Scandal...Is Bonzo really dead? Not seeing a lot of excitement on 'Coda'. I think the already fried catalogue is lending itself to this album's rather low excitement quotient. It will, of course, sell for 3 or 4 weeks. After that, I don't know. 'Darlene' is the standout, though...Ozzy is a joke. We're getting some phone calls, but he won our turkey of the year award by a land-slide...We got strong phone calls on Kiss before we even played it. So, we think it's worth a shot...Also rolled with Texas favorites Fabulous T-Birds. Should work well also in Northeast industrial markets, if you get my drift...If you're looking for a third track from Men At Work, 'Be Good Johnny' is a smoker... Incredible phone calls and sales on Utopia's 'Hammer In My Heart'. Finally upped to heavy this week...Also

the new Duran Duran is doing great in both phones and sales. What a great comeback effort for the Capitol staff...Chrissie's 'Chain Gang' sounds good on the radio. If you can't find it at the local import store, too bad."

WMMR, PHILADELPHIA M.D.-LISA RICHARDS: "Two great imports to check out: Flock Of Seagulls 'Wishing--If I Had A Photograph Of You'. If you've never been a Flock Of Seagulls fan before, you will be now; and Human League 'Mirror Man'...I had a marvelous time in New York this week and had the opportunity to see The Fixx at the Bottom Line and the Stray Cats at the Ritz. I was particularly impressed with Sy of the Fixx, who has a striking resemblance to David Bowie and lifeguards everywhere. The Stray Cats, as usual, were on fire. It was great seeing: (stroke time) Alan Wolmark, Jerry Jaffe, John McGhan, Jim Monaghan, Derek Shulman, Chris Dye, John Waite, and Neal Mirsky. Thanks to Linda Feder, Don Wasley, and Mr. Lim-O-Zine man for a wonderful time."

WBCN, BOSTON, MA M.D.-MARC MILLER: "Got to see Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul last night, and bless my soul, those guys can cook. They bring all the excitement of all the great New Jersey bands right into your face, and they left the crowd screaming for more. If this isn't enough to entice you, drummer Dino Dinelli, formerly of the Rascals, has not aged 30 seconds since he played on the Ed Sullivan Show. It's truly one of the hotter shows on the road. Don't miss it...Also got the chance to see Peter Gabriel in NYC last week. That's another incredible show for all kinds of different reasons. His use of headset microphones is truly innovative, and I think he's one of the few performers who can actually get away with having both of his hands free. Another one not to be missed...Is there any truth to the rumor that Ozzy Osbourne put out his live album because of a similar idea by some of his former cronies? Any further info would be greatly appreciated...And now the moment you've all been waiting for, DANNY SEZ: 'Congratulations to Sire Records for having the foresight to release Modern English's'I Melt With 7a-P. This song has been a favorite around here for months. Don't pass it up, it's infectious and carries a punch guaranteed to light up any phone...Another winner is Rank And File on Slash Records. This band brings Country and Western into the 80's and beyond. Harmonies and guitar licks for days.'"

KGB-FM, SAN DIEGO, CA M.D.-TED EDWARDS: "There's so much sun out here that I'm thinking of changing my name to Troy or some such crazyfornia moniker. But on the other hand, there is weather out here, as you may have noticed from the national news. And although Larry Bruce lost two trees and the fence in his backyard, things are back to normal. So let's add some records...First in this week, a man who cannot be denied or he'll eat your first born. Ozzy's on the radio at KGB-FM. We'll start with 'Paranoid'... We also went with the newly recorded version of 'Hot Blooded' by Foreigner. A nice little piece of work to spice up the air as we head towards Christmas...We also did a couple of Re-Adds this week, the first being The Fixx, 'Stand Or Fall'. KGB went on this early, and it didn't seem to quite work at the time. But considering the national picture, it seers like a more than appropriate time to give it a second shot...Sares goes for Judas Priest. The Re-add is for: 'You Got Another Thinc Coming'...Personal to Paul Lemieux: These are jokes."

DC101, WASHINGTON, DC M.D.-DAVE BROWN: "We welcomed Rush and Rory Gallagher to the Capitol Center a couple of night ago. We all would like to thank: Rory Gallagher and his management for being so gracious. Also thanks to: Bob McKenzie and Jerry Jaffe of Polygram for their help and cooperation in putting it all together."

WDVE, PITTSBURGH, PA M.D.-RON NENNI: "Hey, c'mon, give it a shot. There's nothing out. C'mon. There's only one more report week. Sound familiar? Yes, 82's almost over and we're finding room fer material that we've felt strongly about during the past couple of months, such as Vandenberg. 'Burning Heart' is a quality song that should do well...My old buddy Mery 'Have-I-ever-steered-you-wrong?' Amols and I agreed that 'Hungry Like The Wolf' by Duran Duran was a smash. After the remix and so forth, the tire of truth is here. There's quite a buzz, and I'm sure about this one. By the way, Capitol should listen to guys like Mery more often...If you played 'Rosanna' from Toto, 'This Time It Must Be Love' by Donnie Iris will work. It's a Top 5 request item in town...Let's face it, it's Eddie Van Halen with Michael Jackson, not Michael Jackson with Eddie Van Halen...Saga was in town this week. They're a supergroup in Pittsburgh. Thanks to: Harvey, Frank, Bill, and Lenny. The pirhanna brothers in heavy forever... 'My City Was Gone' by the Pretenders is a Top 5 request item, and it debuted #15 in sales...J.Geils Band debuted at #12, Saga at #11, Ozzy debuted at #8, and Led Zeppelin debuted #2.77Things are looking good for Night Ranger. Getting good phones, and wéve moved it up in rotation.. .Ozzy and Led Zeppelin still rule the phones."

WNEW-FM, NEW YORK, NY M.D.-JIM MONAGHAN: "Welcome back, Ray Free and Deby Gould. Ray, you look 10 years younger. And Debbie, you've become absolutely charming since you don't have to promote Ozzy anymore... New Adds this week include: Bruce Springsteen's Import 45 with a previously unreleased B Side from the 'Nebraska' sessions; the Culture Club album (a hit); are-add or Duran Duran; the Stray Cats 45 with the non-Lp B Side; and, 'Sexual Healing' by Marvin Gaye. Not only are we playing the record, but we'll even tell listeners who he is...If you're having difficulty with Scandal, check out the song 'Love's Got A Line On You'. We even got mail for it...I think it's time to get a couple of facts straight: One, not only did our competition not have the World Premiere of the new Led Zeppelin album, they didn't even have the NYC debut. Two, there was only one live radio broadcast in NYC on Thanksgiving Night. Linda Ronstadt from Dallas on WNEW-FM. Three, copies of New York Metropolitan Area maps complete with streets, avenues, and major thoroughfares are readily available at gas stations and newsstands...Personal to Chip Hobart: Your calendar is in the mail, honest. Please be careful what you say about Scott Muni in front of other people. Very, very tacky."

WLPX, MILWAUKEE, WI M.D.-SUSIE AUSTIN: "First of all, I'd like to give a big thanks to: John Brodey at Network Records; along with: Todd Rundgren, Roger Powell, Kasim Sulton, and Willie Wilcox of Utopia for autographing all the Utopia albums we gave away when we did our live Utopia simulcast with USA Network on Thanksgiving Night, along with a limited edition T-shirt. Thanks. ..Our George Thorogood 'Bad To The Bone' promotion went over big this past week. Thanks to: Jeff McGuire of Capitol/EMI for coming down Thanksgiving Night to help us judge Milwaukee's hottest guitar licks. The winner walked away with a $1,000 gift certificate, and the runner-up got Capitol/EMI albums of their choice...The Stray Cats played here Friday to a soldout audience. We're also giving away a vintage Rock-ola 'Rock This Town' juke box filled with 45's, along with five litter boxes filled with Stray Cats' albums, pins, posters, T-shirts, and, yes, even kitty litter...Kiss goes to heavy this week due to audience response; along with Golden Earring's 'Twilight Zone'...Riot's live 'Restless Breed' is a real cranker...Duran Duran's 'Hungry Like The Wolf', complete with moans, is fantastic...Buck, you can call me Susie."

WOUR, UTICA/SYRACUSE, NY M.D.-TOM STARR: "Good thing there wasn't much listening to be done this week, 'cause nothing short of a crowbar could have gotten Dexys Midnight Runners off this kid's turntable. Derivative of the most unlikely combination of styles, and thus, totally unique. This one is destined to ignite a tremendous response. We're seeing it already...Also, fun to see retailers achieving nirvana with the Zeppelin."

WCOZ, BOSTON, MA M.D.-PAUL LEMIEUX: "My biggest post-Thanksgiving treat this week was the arrival of 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson. I never thought Michael would do a straightahead guitar song, but with Eddie Van Halen's help, 'Beat It' really rocks...Glad to see MTV is keeping Duran Duran alive. 'Hungry Like The Wolf' could turn out to be another left field album radio hit--like Missing Persons 'Words' or A Flock Of Seagulls...Charlie Farren, formerly of the Joe Perry Project, has a new 45 out with his current band The Enemy. It's called 'America Rocks', and it's already on our local and new music show 'Party Out Of Bounds'. If you'd like a copy, contact: Masci Management, 304 Boylestown Street, Boston, MA 02116...Finally, a personal to Ted Edwards: Until Sarah gets there, anyone is like a sheep to you."

WMMS, CLEVELAND, OH M.D.-KID LEO: "Hi, Mom!"

KRQR, SAN FRANCISCO, CA ASST. P.D.-JON RUSSELL: "Briefly want to thank: Rapper and company from Columbia for the great Moroccan meal. The belly-dancer made me so dizzy,I had the flu for a week. I felt like signing up for the Navel Academy...We're also one who had originally gone on Frank Marino out-of-the-box. Due to lack of national support, we let it slip away. We're now glad to see it coming back and have re-added it this week,. .Looking forward to the English Beat show here in S.F. next week, which makes me feel even comfortable about adding the record--not to mention it's a good tune. I know the show is going to do real well...Have a great week. No comments for me next week, so Merry Christmas and Happy New York all you knuckleheads. Now get outta here."

WGRQ, BUFFALO. NY M.D.-BILL WESTQP: "New life from an album almost 26 weeks old. We added another track from Men At Work, 'Be Good Johnny'. As Top 40 begins to pound 'Down Under', now is the time to keep the Lp fresh with a new track. #1 in sales in Buffalo...Adds include: Sammy Hagar and Kiss...I had heretofore believed Heavy metal was on its way out, what with the new sound and all, but speak of the devil, Ozzy again brings them out of the woodwork...On the other end of the spectrum, I was delighted to take in part of the Spyro Gyra homecoming this week. Check out their new Lp 'Incognito' at home. Thanks to Transcon/ Amherst Records rep Paul Ba?st for a real classy show...Led Zep is #3 sales in Buffalo. Calls are heavy. #2 most requested: 'Darlene...Joni Mitchell nearly top 10 sales. Using it morning and middays only."

KROQ!: LOS ANGELES, CA M.D.-LARRY GROVES: "The November Birch cane out and in L.A. KROQ had an 8.2, making us the #1 musical station and the #2 station overall for the third month in a row."

WYNF, TAMPA/ST. PETERSBURG, FL M.D.-RON DIAZ: "This past Saturday, Central Florida had its eyes and ears on one of rock 'n' roll's truly great bands, THE WHO. The concert was just about flawless. Everything was right, including the weather (a clear night in the 70's), the sound (best ever at the Tangerine Bowl), the stage, the crowd, and most importantly, the band. Pete, Roger, John, and Kenny were well rested, enthusiastic, and HOT! The last time I saw The Who was 7797-3 in The Garden, and I really believe they haven't lost anything with the exception of the irreplaceable 'Moon' man. If they're headed your way, don't miss 'em...There is one record this week whose progress I'm especially pleased with: Duran Duran's 'Hungry Like The Wolf'. I've been getting off on this tune for months, and it's great to see it explode into heavy rotation on YNF. The whole album is top notch...Sammy Hagar has a hit in his back pocket with 'Crazy'. It fits our station like a glove."

KSHE, ST. LOUIS, MO M.D.-JACK SILVER: "I spent Thanksgiving week in Chicago. So to make up for lost ink, here goes: Here in the Gateway City, anything that Sammy Hagar releases is met with instant acceptance. The two advance cuts from '3 Lock Box' proves what I've known for years, Sammy can write 'em and sing 'em with the best. Anxiously awaiting the entire Lp.. .1 don't care where or when Zeppelin recorded the trax on 'Coda', few bands can get so many programmers this excitrd. The street is still buzzing over the delivery of the new Lp...Ozzy live is a ballbuster. Any jock who has ever answered a request line has definitly heard 'War Pigs' asked for a million times. What a oreat package from the Blizzard known as Oz...0ther trax that really sound great on KSHE include: 'Pr soner Of Rock And Roll', 38 Special (don't miss this one); and, 'Nobody's Business' from Don Henley; what I consider the best rock track on the air right now, Rainbow's 'Power'; Dire Straits, 'Industrial Disease', and, 'Sing Me Away' from Night Ranger...Waiting anxiously for Bryan Adams's new Lp...On a different subject, my week in Chicago once again made me realize that the Windy City has to be the hottest radio market in the U.S. No stroke, just fact. Up and down the dial there's jock excitement, musical variety, and strong promotions. From Dahl to Daniels, Terry Hemmert to Patti Haze, we can all take lessons from the Chicago jocks... Checking ihe sales chart: Men At Work the #1 album for God knows how long, Stray Cats #4, Saga selling at #13, and the band of the 80's, Novo Combo, resurges to Top 30 sales."

WLLZ, DETROIT, MI M.D.-DOUG PODELL: "Well, it's that time of year again when things slow down. That gives me a chance to go back and refresh myself with records I may have missed. The biggest surprise goes to: Frank Marino. If you originally missed this one, go back and check it out. After a week and a half, 'Strange Dreams' is building nicely...Also, CSN's 'Southern Cross' is picking up very big positives. This is another album I really didn't treat too seriously...Buck Dharma's '5:35' starting to pick up some increased action on the phones. This one took a little while for us, but it looks like it could be around awhile...Also went back and checked the Robert Plant import 'Far Post', and that's also doing very well...Locally, there's a band called Rhythm Method here who may have the hottest Detroit rock project since the first Romantics album back in '78. If you'd like more information, feel free to call...Some other good local projects include: The Look and Toby Redd...Adam Ant finally goes this week. About a year ago, Dan Deni, gris, Epic's rep in Minneapolis, and I did everything in our power to convince people that Adam Ant was for real. Boy, Danny, I wish we were together right now to raise a toast. I guess our ears weren't that bad after all...Congrats to: Howie Klein and everybody out at 415 for Pop-O-Pies . Great record...Speaking of Minneapolis, I saw my old boss Alan Young over the holidays. Congrats on your new position at WILS-FM, Lansing...Also good seeing: Beth Rosengard and Les Cook... In the 'crazies' department: A big 'Hey' to Lee Randall --good talking with you, you knucklehead...And finally, to Essa: Keep fighting the good fight and we'll see you in Detroit...And one big 'finally'--get ready, world--Seger is back!"

DAVE GARIANO, SEBASTIAN, CASEY & ASSOCIATES: "The award for the best radio station on my recent travel is a tie. The award goes to WAPP, NY and KPKE in Denver. These two Doubleday stations sounded hotter than a pistol. Real enjoyable listening...Be on the lookout for one of the hottest debut albums in rock 'n' roll, Jon Butcher Axis on Polygram Records, The Rock Department has it coming your way in early February of '83 and this will be the next Boston band to power their way up your playlist...Belated SC&A welcomes to John Posey KZOK, Seattle from KEZE, Spokane; Greg Crouch to WMJQ, Rochester as Production Director; and to Andy Geller, WDWQ,Charleston from WAAF, Worcester...Remember only 18 shopping days til total credit card withdrawl."

KGON, PORTLAND, OR ASST. P.D.-GLORIA JOHNSON: "Sales: 1) Men At Work, 2) Pat Benatar, 3) Judas Priest, 4) Stray Cats, 5) Hall & Oates. Led Zeppelin debuted at #9 and Ozzy at #12...Requests: 1) Kiss 'War Machine', 2) Led Zeppelin, 3) any Judas Priest, 4) Ozzy, 5) Men At Work.. .0n Monday nights each week, we've been taking requests for five hours and playing back the top 10 at midnight. Top 5 this week were: 1) 'Hellion/Electric Eye' by Judas Priest, 2) still 'War Machine' by Kiss, 3) 'Another Thing Coming' by Judas Priest, 4) 'Screaming For Vengeance' by Priest, 5) 'Dirty Laundry'... In anticipation of the domestic release of the Michael Schenker Group, we added 'Dancer'. Michael is one of the finest rock guitarists around, and he certainly has an active audience here in Portland. I hope Chrysalis doesn't wait too long for the domestic release...Glad to see WAPP is resurrecting 'Boulevard Lights' by Chuck Francour. He's a real talent. He's got some new material and is shopping for a label deal. A&R depart-ments take note

WABX, DETROIT, MI M.D.-GREG ST,JAMES: "Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was great. Doug Podell proved he can communicate with anything, but he's best with turkeys. You should have seen his turkey take-off at the turkey trot. WABX and Clutch Cargo's had a pre-Thanksgiving party, Wednesday the 24th, with the Fixx and Rhythm Method -- a really hot shot...We're doing a holiday food drive with Tubby's Sub Shops. People are asked to donate a non-perishable item; anyone making a donation gets a Pepsi. The response has been great. It's good to see in these hard times people can still help folks having a tough time...Dangerous XPosure fave raves include: Culture Club, Rhythm Method, Thomas Dolby, ABC, and Duran Duran."

KQRS, MINNEAPOLIS. MN M.D.-JOE FOLGER: "Not guts, no glory. Michael Jackson's on...Close to the Psychedelic Furs and listening hard to local favorite Prince.. .Lynn Wells, our new music fanatic, has finally convinced us--Duran Duran is real... Re-added 'Space Age Love Song' fro, Seagulls... Robert Plant's import 'Far Post' sounded excellent at the local import store, so I brought it to the station and put it on...The J. Geils is doing well for us. Researching well...Finally John Mrvos at WXRT: Obviously the sample base did not include a proper balance of North Star fans. Our consultants, Broughton, Cicerelli and McCarthy, tell us Chicago won't make it past Minnesota in the playoffs, and I have a KQ shirt that says 'I'm 100% positive'."

KFOG, SAN FRANCISCO, CA P.0.-DAVE LOGAN: "Our big excitement this week is the new Thomas Dolby Import 'She Blinded Me With Science'. Superb music from a guy who's been in power rotation with us from the start on 'Europa'. Check out his interview in the new Musician for some background on this truly refreshing individual. Lewis Heydelmeier was right about this guy...Records hogging the phone around here include: Joe Piscopo's Medley, Pop-o-Pies 'Truckin' rap, Fashion, Bill Nelson, and the Joni Mitchell album...In the belated thanks department: I'd like to tip my hat to Atlantic for their cool atitude on the Zep ilin sneak. Also, a nod to Paul Rappaport for being a real ace while in town with the Psychedelic Furs. Thanks for all your support of late. Also thanks to Steve Countryman at Leopold for the nice acknowledg-ment...In answer to a question posed a few weeks ago, we were chosen to be the Who station because we were the DIR affiliate, thereby giving us first call in the market. Funny that comment should come from a station that has continually called the syndicators and offered to pay whatever it takes to get the show. Sorry, next time move faster. Despite your comments on the street, we ain't rollin' over and playin' dead. We're still here and will be for a long, long time."

KQAK, SAN FRANCISCO, CA ASST. P.0.-BELLE NOLAN: "Four-day holidays are hell. Not only do you have to make provisions to accommodate the holidays before they happen (by cramming five days of work into three), but once returned, it's a disorienting mad dash to pick up where you left off...The Valley Of The Sun was not so sunny. They had some major storm activity down there (a few sprinkles of rain) that was not necessarily a description of the weather only. KSPM (the Storm) sounded sprite and musically expressive, and dare I say slightly experimental. Keep it up, Jeff. KDKB was into a 10 in a row weekend, and that pretty much was the extent of the rap I heard. I dirtiotice a lot of the ciiici-W771I gone, though--the dinosaur stuff so prevalent in many markets--and the station had a very current feel to it...Good seeing the Evening Star people. Also great seeing Clarence Clemons at Dooley's. That was pure joy...In the meantime, Bob ventured to his home town of Chicago and drummed up some trouble with his old cohorts, Jim DeCastro, Tim Kelly, and Sky Daniels...Hardly any sunshine in Phoenix, and little when we returned to the Bay Area. But that won't stop us from being solar powered December 6th. You see, the sun doesn't have to shine all the time in order for solar energy to be effective. It's one of the misconceptions we hope to shatter. Monday night, the Solar Quake goes nationwide via satellite via 'Rockline', capping off our day of sunshine. With the anniversary of the opening of Fillmore West coming, it seems appro-priate to invite Bill Graham down to the Quake to talk about the advent of one era as well as introducing a new era coming up in rock and roll--one that is highly technical, computer assisted, and solar powered. We're proud to be involved in this promotion...We've been sitting around in sheep's clothing watching the Duran Duran for awhile and know that even grandma would approve of the add. MTV definitely is having an impact on that one. If it's not 'Hungry Like The Wolf', it's hungry for Peter Wolf and company. We gobble 'em up in the Bay Area. Party music for a party season... 'That's Good' definitely is, and we'll bypass the previous Devo negatives for a new shot at a very good record...Night Ranger is on as well. Brad Gillis is a local boy. We like to lean on the local angle, and since Night Ranger is such a strong record, we can't lose...The Tubes debuted their new album 'Live In Petaluma'. Hooray, they may have to change their name to 'Trees'. 1982 is almost over. This is their year, no matter how long it takes."

WAPI-FM, BIRMINGHAM, AL M.D.-JOANNE PETERSON: "The Who were in town last night. What a show, all expecta-tions were fulfilled in a 21/2 hour show. That proved without a shadow of a doubt that The Who are the best in the world. Backstage was really a treat. The band was so friendly and gracious, and Pete Townshend did a live interview with Steve Runner. The best concert this city has ever seen...Playlist was frozen this week. We're gonna give everything we've got some breathing room...The response on Led Zeppelin is as expected monstrous...Men At Work, Saga, and The Clash still dominate the phones as well as Adam Ant, The Fixx, Hall & Oates, and Donald Fagen...Kiss is pulling in most positive phones. Who would have guessed it?"

WQMF, LOUISVILLE, KY M.D.-DUKE MEYER: "Adds: Asia; Vandenberg; A Flock Of Seagulls, second cut; and Don Henley, second cut...We supplied some folks with tickets and transportation to The Who's performance in Lexington last week aboard the QMF Who Express, and man I hate to see those guys stop touring...Something I forgot last week, thanks to Guy Evans for all the help on the Pat Benatar Express that took folks to Cincinnati for her show a couple of weeks ago...C'mon folks. The comments in this Sheet are getting as mud slinging as J.R. Ewing on a bad night. The turkey's from last issue were enough to make me think there's not total harmony in our little radio community. I remember a saying, 'It's better to keep your mouth shut and make people wonder if you're stupid, than to open your mouth and prove it.' Man, I am so depressed, I don't have any body to run down. On second thought, Meiners Yo Mammy."

WPYX, ALBANY, NY M.C.-BOB WELCH: "Adds are: Duran Duran, English Beat, Waitresses, Foreigner, and the Rainbow Live tape, and Stevens & Grdnic...Tip of the hat to W/E/A for their steps in reducing Lp and tape prices. Come on the rest of you, give 'em good quality and good prices. Prices they can afford and watch 'em come back into the stores...Led Zeppelin rules the phones and sales. Debuts at #13 in local sales. If Zep rules, Ozzy drules! The fanged one debuts at #2I in sales and pulls in #2 requests. Watch this space for further developments on Ozzy vs. Glen Falls, NY...Glad to see Capitol has finally decided to go after 'Hungry Like A Wolf'. It took you guys a while to make up your minds, but this remix sounds like a hit to me. That goes right into a medium rotation...Night Ranger moves up this week. This record is a mo-fo. Brad Gillis' guitar is hot. We've been getting calls for a song 'by Ozzy's guitar player'... Golden Earring is drawing top 5 phones, especially for the long version. Sales are about to happen on this one...Couldn't save the English Beat for any later. 'Save It For Later' goes on this week. The song has anirresistable hook...Thanks to Polygram for the live Rainbow. We're picking up renewed interest through this excellent live version of 'Power'...Finally, if you haven't checked out 'Too Much Fun' from Blotto's 'Combo Akimbo', do so. It brings many fond memories of the morning after the night before."

WPYX, ALBANY, NY P.D.-TED UTZ: "First off, apologies go to a certain few to whom I may appear to be a bit aloof. Bruce Moser, for instance. I never formally thanked you for the baby books. Thanks, they're great. Since being upped to Operations Manager for WPYX and our sister WTRY, my hands have been full, and I haven't given the time to the music side that I used to. Best time to catch me is Wednesday thru Friday between 10AM and 2PM...Congratulations are in order to Ed Levine for his awesome showing in the Most Verbose Poll. Years of fine tuning really paid off...Cindy Torri7r-77Pre looking good. I'm getting my big white horse ready (I don't know who will be riding though)...Musically speaking: After one week, Night Ranger moves right up. With all the 'new music', it's great to have a rocker to break wide open... After months of considering, the time is finally right for Duran Duran. The 12" will take it a long way...For those of you who have discovered the new preppy/trendy psychographic, you'll find the Pretenders' Chain Gang' at the top of the list. The masses are just around the corner... 'Allentown' and 'Space Age' go to power this week. ..Men At Work, Joe Jackson, Stray Cats, and The Clash are our Top 4 retail albums...Top Phones For: Led Zeppelin, Adam Ant, Ozzy Osbourne, and Saga...P.S. to Neil Lasher: I saw Larry B. over the holidays. He sends his best personal regards, 'Gobble, Gobble!'"

WFBQ, INDIANAPOLIS, IN M.D.-CAREYCARLSON: "When Peter Gabriel comes to your town, don't miss him."

WBRU, PROVIDENCE, RI P.D.-GEORGE BRADT: "'Smiling In Winter' by the Spoons is right on time. Good production, a str
