Cold is one way to put it.

Crazy is another.

As he has for the past several years,

Josh Latina, an Algonquin police of-

ficer, will brave frigid temperatures to

jump into even more frigid waters in

Lake Michigan.

And then he’ll do it again. Every

hour. For 24 hours.

“You just kind of suck it up and

go,” said Latina of Marengo.

Latina is a super plunger. He’s

among about 30 brave men and women

expected to take part in this year’s

eighth annual Super Polar Plunge, a

benefit for the Illinois Special Olym-

pics hosted by the Law Enforcement

Torch Run.

The event takes place from 2 p.m.

Feb. 22 to 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at Lake Michi-

gan. Heated tents, food, first aid kits

and support people await the plungers

after each jump.

They must raise a minimum of

$2,500 to take 24 icy dips into the

lake, one every hour. Yes, they pay to

freeze.

Why?

“To raise funds and awareness

for Special Olympics,” Latina said.

“That’s the whole reason I’m doing

this. ... I got involved through the po-

lice department, and I haven’t looked

back since.”

Through a fundraising page set up

at www.firstgiving.com, Latina hopes

to raise $3,000, more than last year’s

$2,900 effort.

He’ll then join other plunges for a

day’s worth of camaraderie and shiv-

ers.

The plungers don’t have to go un-

der water, but many do anyway.

“I try to go under when the news

cameras are there,” Latina said. “You

don’t want to do it too often; your

head will start to hurt. It’s like a super

brain freeze.”

Other than that, there’s not much

advice to offer or preparation to it.

Although Latina does stretch be-

fore each dip.

“Once you hit the water, you want

to sprint as fast as you can out of the

water,” he said. “You try not to pull

any muscles or anything, and then

take a cold shower a week before.“But it doesn’t compare to how cold

it is. ... One year, it was so bad it was

all iced over, and they had to punch a hole in the ice.”

He has his wife, Emily, as a support person by his side, and his two sons, Kalin, 6, and Karsen, 3, who like to visit throughout the day.

“They love the whole atmosphere of it,” Latina said.

They’d really like to jump in with their dad. Perhaps when they’re older.

Along with the Super Plunge, 20 other one-time Polar Plunges benefit the statewide Special Olympics. Those participants must raise a minimum of

$75 each. The Super Plunge kicks off the

plunge season, said Barbara DiGuido, director of communications and media relations for Special Olympics Illinois.

“They have their own little rou-tine they do with somebody leading the cheer and getting everybody revved up,” she said.

The money raised through all the plunges, about $1.6 million last year, goes toward the Special Olympics’ 19 summer and winter sports, and the agency hopes to add more and increase its number of athletes over the next three years, she said.

Other plunges, including a March 3 Chicago Polar Plunge at North Av-enue Beach, benefit Special Olympics in Chicago. All are Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraisers.

Law enforcement groups started the plunges as a unique and creative way to raise money for Special Olym-pics. The idea has paid off.

The 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge for Special Olympics in Chi-cago alone raised $650,000 last year. This year’s goal is $1 million, Execu-tive Director Susan Nicholl said.

Unlike black-tie events and other more elaborate fundraisers, the cost of the plunges are minimal, she said. From an economical standpoint, it would be difficult to duplicate the success of the plunges, she said.

And those who do it gain a

lifetime of bragging rights.

“You know some people think they’re outgoing and adventurous,” she said. “This really is kind of the measuring stick, the yard stick.”

Katie Swanson of Lake in the Hills has taken the Chicago Polar Plunge as part of “Team Liquid Courage” for the past three years. One of the plunge’s largest fundrais-ing teams, with its size ranging from 30 to 60 memebers, Team Liquid Courage has raised roughly $75,000 the past two years by hosting numer-ous charity events, such as golf out-ings and poker tournaments. They hope to raise $50,000 this year.

Swanson joined at the request of a college friend.

“Not only is it a ridicuously crazy thing to do, which makes it really appealing, I am in the education field and work with special educa-tion children so it was something appealing on another level,” said the 27-year-old, who is working toward a graduate degree in school psychol-ogy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

About the only way to describe the plunge is “freezing,” she said.

“Even if it’s really freezing and you second guess yourself for a sec-ond, the people there make it such a warm environment,” she said. “You get caught up in it, and you don’t even think about how freezing it is.”

FYI ...For information or to donate to Josh

Latina’s effort to raise money for the Illinois Special Olympics by jumping 24 times in 24 hours as part of a Super Polar Plunge Feb. 22-23 in Lake Michigan, visit www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/josh-latina/ 2013-super-plunge.

Among 20 other Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunges benefitting Special Olym-pics Illinois, the closest to McHenry County is a Lake County plunge taking place Feb. 24 at Lakefront Park in Fox Lake.

Go to www.soill.org for information on Special Olympics Illinois and the fundraising efforts.

Another plunge, the Chicago Polar Plunge on March 3 at North Avenue Beach, benefits Special Children’s Charities, the fundraising arm of Special Olympics in Chicago. For more information, go to www.sochicago.org.

Josh Latina of Marengo is shown Jan. 30 outside his home. Lati-na is raising money for the Illinois Special Olympics by participating in his fourth Super Polar Plunge event at the end of February. He plans on jumping into Lake Michigan 24 times in 24 hours. Sarah Nader - snader@ shawmedia.com

Q: Did a Nash ever pacethe Indy 500? I say yes;my retired friends here atthe nursing home say no.We are all car crazy andracing fans. Can you tell usmore about Nash and thatera of the automobile? El-wood K., Worchester,Mass.A: Elwood, you win!

Nash was the official pacecar of the Indy 500 in 1947and was driven by GeorgeW. Mason, president ofNash-Kelvinator. Masonwas a marketing geniuswho used Nash automo-biles in the “Superman”TV series, too.As I’ve touched on in the

past, Kelvinator and Nashformed a corporate mergerin 1937 when CharlesNash, then CEO and presi-dent of Nash Motors, merged his company withGeorge W. Mason’s Kelv-inator Corp., known for re-frigeration.Mason thus began a

major marketing cam-paign that to this day is re-spected as novel and veryeffective.Concerning the Indy

500, it is “understood”that Tony Hulman, thenpresident of the Indi-anapolis Motor Speedway,“invited” Mason to havehis Nash as the officialpace car in 1947. In reality, and knowing of Mason’smarketing whiz, Iwouldn’t be surprised ifMason arranged the dealwith the Hulman family,as he knew of the market-ing benefits pacing theIndy 500 would do for hisNash automobile. Inciden-tally, when Mason pacedthe field in 1947, it marked

the first time an Indy 500pace car was not a con-vertible, again giving cre-dence to a possibleHulman-Mason “agree-ment” for the betterment

of both companies. On race day, Mason

drove the car while his rid-ing partner was Indy 500winner Wilbur Shaw. Healso had actor and race fanClark Gable pose for somepublicity photos.Gable was very inter-

ested in auto racing, andhis movie with BarbaraStanwyck called “To PleaseA Lady” centered on Indyracing and was released in1950.But the Indy 500 was

much more than just apace car experience forMason. He provided 18Nash vehicles for all theIndy officials and a fleet ofnew Nash cars displayedin a large tent for fan andcorporate entertainment.Mason was way ahead ofthe curve when it came tocorporate entertainment, all while providing infor-mation on his Nash auto-mobiles.Mason died on Oct. 8,

1954, after his successful

negotiation of the mergerof Nash and Hudson, which would be calledAmerican Motors. Thus,Mason is the godfather ofAmerican Motors, too.

CARS WE REMEMBER

More Nash-Kelvinator memories

This Nash was one of the 18 cars given to officials at the Indy 500 for their use by George W. Mason, president ofNash Kelvinator. At the 500 in 1947, a yellow Nash paced the field, while a gigantic tent was erected displaying nu-merous new Nash automobiles for fans and corporate types.
