French traders settled at Cayenne around 1635 and in 167 4 the area passed to the French crown. A mismanaged attempt at colonization in 1763-65 resulted in the death of over 11,000of the settlers. During the French Revolution it was a place of exile royalist supporters who escaped the Terror. From 1809 to 1817 the colony was under Brit1sh and Portuguese rule.
