CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
This year the Club has really put in a sprint in the final stages. A whole host of outings
have come together to ensure that the year ends with a flourish. After the long period of
relative quiet, following the air show outing organised by Dave, we launched into a number
of activities. Finally there was the hot air balloon outing. This required an early start but
it was a great opportunity to get images of colourful balloons. Following that was the
outing to Melrose Arch. I found that this was a tough exercise in that photographs were
not that obvious and shooting at night is always a challenge.
Then there was the Club Braai at Horwoods farm. This was a purely social event and it was
great to get to spend time talking to other members as opposed to being too busy taking
photographs.
Last Sunday was the quickly organised outing to the abandoned halls of the old Park
Station in Johannesburg. I love this kind of photography. It is not competition
photography and won’t do well at the club, but for me, there is such a sense of nostalgia
when I take pictures of these abandoned and broken spaces.
Finally the outings will come to an end for the year with a visit to Treehaven Waterfowl
Trust. This is an amazing place to sharpen your skills with some bird photography.
During the outing to Park Station one of our members made the comment to me that he
found it difficult to take pictures as part of a group. Whilst he enjoyed the social aspects
of being in a group, he found it difficult to find the pictures he would if he were by
himself. I knew what he was talking about because I am exactly the same. There are
different pressures on you when you are part of a group. You look at other photographers
taking a picture and the questions start running through your head …. what can he see that
I can’t see? What if I don’t get any good pictures, am I a bad photographer? Etc…. I’m
not sure whether my images were better or worse than anybody else’s but I did thoroughly
enjoy the outing. There are definitely pictures waiting to be taken!

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE
1. Sellect Canvas (Frame) Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add a
boarder to the image and make your adjustements. If you do not wish to add a boarder, go
to Step 2.
2. Sellect Image Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Tick the following boxes:
Scales Sizes, Constrain Proportions and Resample Images.
3. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.

If the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is correct. If the vertical adjusts to a

border is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and reducing the file size
to a maximum of 1,500 Kilobytes to ensure that the image remains within the specified
1,500Kb.
7. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can be
sellected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/Convert to Profile.

First Camera -
Description & Year
acquired - Type
(film/digital)
The first camera I ever owned is my Canon 50D which I bought in March 2010. I used to
"beg, borrow and steal" cameras, (both film and digital - all point and shoot), for my trips abroad. Travel photography especially architecture, brought on the photographic interest.
Started Photography Seriously - When
Joining the Edenvale Photographic Club in 2010. I had however, always had an interest
in photography, and had even done some photography courses, but never went into it seriously. It is now a wonderful passion of mine, a true creative outlet which allows you
relax and forget about everything else.
Main Photographic Interest
Architecture, portraits, colour, street photography and a little bit of Urbex. (Nothing that moves).
Camera & Lenses
used Canon 50D with two lenses 28-135mm lens and 100mm macro lens
Joined EPC February 2010
Photographic Achievements
Being fairly new in this highly competitive game I have not yet entered many
competitions. I have entered a salon and got an acceptance. I also received two places in the Top 10 in the Getpix 2010 National Photographic Competition in the Black and
White Category. Both images were published in a coffee table book.
Hobbies & other
Interests
Attending Art- and Photography Exhibitions, Craft and other décor Exhibitions.
Tradional Clothing Fashion Shows. Travelling. Curating exhibitions. I am an Art
Historian by training, and am the Manager for Visual Arts and Crafts for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Marievale
Good for bird photography with the
occasional view of otters and crabs.
There are 5 or so hides along the
different roads. The roads are pretty
unkept and heavy duty vehicles do travel

you see a sign on the left indicating the
sanctuary. The sanctuary is approximately 3
km further on after passing the SANDF
(defence force) base.
Rondebult Bird photography. There are 3 main
hides. Good for morning photography.
Rondebult is a short drive (approx. 25
minutes) from Johannesburg International
Airport and within an hours drive from
Pretoria. The sanctuary is open daily
throughout the year from 07h00 to 17h00
and is found by heading south from
Johannesburg on the N3 highway. The
sanctuary is well signed posted and after
turning left at the R103/R554 (Heidelberg /

is on the right hand side of the road after
approximately 9 km. The entrance is

HUMOUR
How to Tell the Sex of a Fly
A woman walked into the kitchen to find her
husband stalking around with a fly swatter
'What are you doing?'
She asked.
'Hunting Flies'
He responded.
'Oh! Killing any?'
She asked.
'Yep, 3 males, 2 Females,' he replied.
24 | P a g e
Intrigued, she asked.
'How can you tell them apart?'
He responded,
‘3 were on a beer can,
2 were on the phone.’
UNUSUAL PHOTOGRAPHS
This is a case of one photographer photographing a 2nd photographer. The following photos were
taken by Hans van de Vorst from the Netherlands at the Grand Canyon, Arizona. The descriptions
are his own. The identity of the photographer in the photos is unknown.
25 | P a g e
I was simply stunned, seeing this guy standing on this solitary rock at the Grand Canyon. The
canyon's depth is 900 meters (3000 ft) here. The rock on the right is next to the canyon and is safe.
Watching this guy wearing flip-flop sandals, with camera and tripod, I asked myself 3 questions:
1. How did he get onto that rock?
2. Why not take that sunset picture from the rock to the right, which is perfectly safe?
3. How will he get back?
After the sun set behind the canyon's horizon, he packed his things (with only one free hand) and
prepared himself for the jump. This all took about 2 minutes. At that point he had the full attention of
the crowd of tourists.
He's now at the point of no return.
He jumped in his flip-flops.
26 | P a g e
Now you can see that the safe rock is higher so he had to land lower, which was quite steep, and tried
to use his one free hand to grab the rock.
Look carefully at the photographer. He has a camera, a tripod and also a plastic bag, all on his
shoulder or in his left hand. Only his right hand is available to grab the rock and the weight of his
stuff is a problem. He lands low. Both his right hand and right foot are slipping. At that very moment,
I take this shot. He then pushes his body against the rock, waits for a few seconds, throws his stuff up
on the flat rock, climbs up and walks away, presumably to a bathroom to change his shorts. I know I
had to change mine and I was just watching!
Hans van de Vorst
