4COACHING
Our FOS Program offers world-class instruction for all skill levels.
No sailing experience is necessary, only a desire to be on the water. The program offers scheduled group coaching, plus intensive clinics for the beginner sailor or those who want a refresher. Advanced sailors can refine their skills and continue to grow under the direction of our Sailing Director, Elizabeth Shaw O’Toole, and talented staff of coaches. NEW THIS SEASON, a free one hour private lesson will be included with each FOS Membership.
Beginner Clinics: the best way to get ready for the season.
Our adult learn to sail program will introduce sailors to new skills aboard the club-owned fleet of Ideal 18s. During these clinics, participants will learn new sailing vocabulary, how to rig and de-rig the boat properly and basic skills required to safely operate the vessel in fair conditions. These clinics are also a great idea for novice sailors who would like to learn more and refresh their skills for the season ahead. Two three-part clinics will be offered at no extra cost to FOS program members. The material covered in both clinics will be similar, but sailors are welcome to sign up for both clinics if desired.
CLINIC 1 Friday, May 10 6 - 9pm
Saturday, May 11 9am - 4pm Sunday, May 19 9am - 4pm
CLINIC 2 Friday, June 21 6 - 9pm
Saturday, June 22 9am - 4pm Sunday, June 30 9am - 4pm
Skills & Drills Clinics: hone your skills, one session at time.
Four times per month (June, July and August) our group will meet for clinic-style coaching sessions. Each month will include two Tuesday evening (6pm-9pm) and two Saturday morning (9am-12pm) sessions scheduled around our many other racing and leisure sailing opportunities.
June 4, 8, 15 & 25 | July 16, 20, 27 & 30 | August 10, 13, 24 & 27

The freedom to decide.
First-time sailors regularly participating in the FOS program will work to become “checked-out” sailors by the end of the summer. FOS members with experience, or those who pick up the skills quickly can elect to take a check-out session (fee applicable) with one of our coaches at any time during the season once they are ready.
A “checked-out” sailor can borrow an Ideal 18 from our club fleet for a day sail during our regular schedule. Whether taking a friend out to enjoy the summer sun or having an afternoon abroad with your family, you will have the skills and experience to safely operate these boats on your own schedule.
The FOS Program really does have something for everyone. IHYC is committed to offering its members the freedom to decide what this unique program can become for them. It ensures that members have a special place to meet, share and connect through the wonderful sport of sailing.
Other Water Sports.
Members will also have access to club kayaks and paddle boards for launch from the East Property. On Tuesday afternoons, there is also the option of joining in with our Ladies’ Sunfish Sailing group. Beyond these activities, you will also have access for training to participate in our race committee for premier local regattas.
FOS Sunday Sail & Dockside Mimosas: Sunday, Funday.
If racing is not your thing, or if you are looking for a change of pace, join the fun and friendly member-led Sunday Sails. A great way to spend the morning on the water (10am-12pm) followed by a dockside Mimosa bar for those who would like to raise a glass (or two).
