Care Provider in America!“When I started having problems with my hearing, I asked my doctor where I should go. He recommended seeing an Audiologist instead of going to one of those hearing aid places you see everywhere.

e reason... Audiologists have Doctoral Degrees from Accredited Universities, are formally trained and folow a strict code of ethics under their licensure law.

My doctor recommended visiting Winter Haven Audiology or Ridge Audiology because no matter which of their locations I go to, there is an Audiologist there.

Every month readers flock to the stands to get the new issue of

Focus to find the stories featuring their mom, dad, child, neighbor or friend. We know this because anyone on our staff can tell you the stories of what happens on the 1st of each month. Sometime in the morning the phones start ringing and we take the calls all day “Where can I get the new issue?” or “I’ve driven to several boxes and they’re all empty, where can I find a new Focus?” We pick them up from the press at some point on the 1st and it takes all day, sometimes a day and a half, for our delivery staff to fill all the boxes. We love taking the calls though because it just reminds us that the Winter Haven community embraces the magazine and depends on it for their local stories.

What many people don’t realize is that we as a staff can only take a very limited amount of credit for producing this resource to our community. It is completely funded by the business community of Winter Haven through advertising. Each summer for the last several years we have dedicated certain issues to be the “Business Focus” where we allow businesses the opportunity to tell the behind-the-scene stories about their companies. So many of our local businesses are family owned and operated. When you can understand the stories of the people behind the business name, it shows you what a vital role they play in our community.

This month, we are absolutely honored to feature on our cover the Winter Haven Hospital. Very few businesses contribute as much to our community as the hospital. Not just philanthropically, but the impact that the hospital makes on our local economy is tremendous. Their talented team of doctors, nurses and hundreds of other employees keep Winter Haven healthy.

Our interview was with Dr. Celestino Vega, a hospital vice president and the director of the hospital’s Family Health Centers. It is not common to see a hospital run its own family medicine practice, but he shared with us the many benefits of having this structure, namely attracting the best physicians possible and offering better care to patients.

The Winter Haven Hospital is a tremendous resource to our community, in addition to many of our small businesses. Also in this issue you will find many other behind-the-scene tales of businesses in our community who are here to support you. Please make sure that in return, you support them. Our business community is what keeps our community thriving.

1st annual car show at spring haven retirement community fine Cars lined up to Compete for Cash prizes!

The popular Spring Haven Retirement Community has hosted many fine events, but this car show was a first

for this beautiful, peaceful venue. Gail Pyle, Marketing Coordinator, planned and organized this successful fine automobile show, which was held Saturday, July 17, 2010 from 4 to 7 PM at SHRC, 1225 Havendale Blvd. in Winter Haven.

Spring Haven residents and spectators from all over voted for the winners at this family friendly, cash prize event. Thirty-eight cars in the display were viewed and appreciated by all. Registration for car entrants was a reasonable $10.00 and included 2 meals. Proceeds from food, entertainment, and raffles benefited Meals on Wheels of Polk County.

Employees of Spring Haven dressed like they were at a drive-in restaurant from the ‘50s. You could see in the eyes of the residents, participants, employees and spectators that they were all reliving the happy, simpler times of a magical era.

To make the atmosphere complete, entertainer, DJ and Master of Ceremonies Babe Plante played music from the ‘50s and ‘60s. This brought back fond memories and put smiles on everyone’s faces. Babe Plante owns the famous Babe Plante’s Wonderful World of Music. His long list of accomplishments include performing for George W. Bush at his Phillips Academy high school reunion.

Cliff Taylor, an active Spring Haven resident, was seen analyzing the cars so he could vote on the ‘crème of the crop’. Active is the key word, as Cliff is big into Senior Games. He has won numerous trophies and medals participating in sports.

As far as car entrants go, an honorable mention should go to Jacob Hamilton. Jacob entered an orange 1974 Volkswagen Super Beatle. This young man is only 12-years-old, but he’s well on his way to learning the pride of ownership and showmanship. His dad Robert bought the car for a project to help Jacob follow in his older brothers’ footsteps.

Owners Jim and Susie Pearce entered a

1963 Studebaker Avanti. They are the second owners of this immaculate car they purchased in 1969. That’s 41 years owning the same car. Typically, only serious collectors can make this claim.

Oscar Hutchinson from Lakeland entered his pride and joy, a red 1937 Ford 3-window coupe. This was a popular ride back in the day, and was available in 3 or 5 window configurations.

It was a tough vote as all cars entered were absolutely magnificent. Following are the winners:

1st Place – Dave Hines, Lakeland, FL – 2006 Ford Mustang GT- $200.00 Cash Prize

2nd Place – Ken & Helen Gibson, Auburndale, FL – 1959 Caddy - $150.00 Cash Prize

3rd Place – Thomas Dunn, Lakeland, FL – 1968 Chevy Truck - $100.00 Cash Prize

4th Place – David Miller, Winter Haven, FL –1957 Ford Hard Top - $50.00 Cash Prize

5th Place – Bob Craig, Auburndale, FL – 1930 Plymouth Coupe - $25.00 Cash Prize

With 38 cars entered and approximately 300 residents and spectators in attendance, you can be sure Spring Haven Retirement Community will host more great car shows. Marketing Coordinator Gail Pyle plans to host car shows semi-annually.

Keep reading the Events Calendar in FOCUS MAGAZINE for upcoming local events.

We look forward to seeing you at the next event at Spring Haven!

“banana george” blair: the barefoot ambassador95 year old barefoot Water skier, banana george is an inspiration to all Who meet him

fine Cars lined up to Compete for Cash prizes!

“Banana George” Blair was born January 22, 1915. While in his early 20’s attending school in N.J.,

he would jump a train and ride it down to Florida with his college friends for spring break. One year a group of hobos threw him from the train and fractured his back. When, in his early 40’s, he underwent surgery to have his back fused, he was sent to Florida to recover. To help the healing process, George frequently munched on bananas for the potassium that would benefit his back. It was in Florida that Banana George was reborn. While recouping, a ski instructor

told him to give skiing a whirl to strengthen his back, so into the water went George, back brace and all. It was a love affair with the water that has gone on for over 50 years. After mastering the art of water skiing, Banana George discovered barefoot skiing in his late 40’s. Soon he opened two ski schools in his New Jersey hometown. He began training and competing in professional tournaments for bare footing and even won a couple of national titles. Banana George is easily identified wherever he goes, as he dresses in yellow from head to toe and drives a yellow Lincoln. At all the

tournaments he attended, he would have a truckload of bananas delivered to pass out to the skiers. After retiring, Banana George focused all his attention on bare footing and the sport’s promotion. He has skied on every continent, even Antarctica, and even set a couple of world records. As the guest of ambassadors to countries such as Germany and Monaco, this Barefoot Ambassador has done much to promote visibility for the sport. At the age of 87, the Sports Illustrated for Women magazine named Banana George the “Sexiest Man in Sports.”

Carol Lowe, the Executive Director for 30 years at The Water Ski Hall Of Fame has great things to say about Banana George. “George was instrumental in moving the ski school to a more visible location in Polk City. He came into the Hall of Fame one day in 1985 and said, ‘What would you do if you had $200,000.00?’ I said to him, ‘I would put it in the bank until we had enough money to move the Hall of Fame to a bigger more visible area.’ That next week we had a check for $200,000.00 from Banana George. It was our seed money, and 13 years later our dream came true. We built and moved to Polk City, off I-4 at exit 44.” At 70 he took up wake boarding; 75 snow boarding; 81 race car driving; 82 skydiving; 83 surfing and at 85 bull riding. Staying active, whether he’s out dancing with his wife JoAnn (his #1 fan) or playing the drums to rock music, Banana George is still on the go at 95. Now living in NY to be near and enjoy his family, he regularly attends the YMCA, walks downtown for his workouts and attends Broadway shows.

We are gonna miss seeing Banana George run into Cafe Latte in his yellow wetsuit, dripping wet and ordering his veggie pizza. Rock on Banana George!

Banana George in his own words, “The future depends on ideas, and imagination rules the world.”banana george doing his favorite things at 95 years of age.

chris combee represents polk schools in national spelling bee

Christopher George Combee, II, is a champion speller.

That’s a very big deal at any age, but it’s especially meaningful that a 12-year-old Polk County sixth grader competed with 272 others for the $30,000 grand prize in Washington, D.C. at the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition.

Combee lives in Auburndale with parents, Chris and Molly and 6-year-old brother Max. He enjoys Berkley Middle School so

much he “tries not to miss” and has always earned only A’s. As for favorite subjects, Combee said, “I like them all.” He credits his teachers for their encouragement and appreciates when they ask him for help. Combee remembers the day after he won the regional contest when his PE coach asked him how to spell “cancel.”

Berkley financed his participation in the Bee. After placing first in a basic spelling test administered by English teacher Debbie Hampton, Combee then competed with 7th/8th graders for the district title. Next

came February’s regionals and finally the national rounds in June.

At the National Spelling Bee, ESPN broadcast the preliminaries and ABC covered the final competition between the 8-to-15-year-old spellers. Combee remembers his nervousness, lumpy throat, large crowds and flashing cameras.

Despite the unknown, Combee still appreciated the whole experience. Following the initial computer round, Chris advanced through the second to the third before

stumbling over “pickelhaube” (spiked helmet worn by German soldiers).

The upbeat Chris was only slightly disappointed. After the competition, the stress disappeared and three days remained at the Grand Hyatt Hotel for “just having fun and seeing the sights” with his dad. They visited the Lincoln and Washington Memorials, Arlington Cemetery, Smithsonian museums, and Chinatown. Combee was especially impressed with the size of the buildings and the diverse displays of art. He laughed when his dad wondered, “What did LL Cool J do to deserve being in the Smithsonian?”

Bee Week 2010 provided 110 spellers with their first visit to the nation’s capital.

Specifically, Combee described himself as “awestruck.” For his father’s first ever airline flight, the younger, more experienced flier Chris provided a “play by play” from times he’s previously visited grandparents in Buffalo.

Comber’s father credits his son’s talent to Molly, because “she read frequently to him.” Dad is proud to say, “He’s read more books than I’ve ever read and before he was three could spell better than me.” He appreciates the Polk County schools and teachers who have encouraged his son to excel. Dad is also excited that little brother Max is “as smart as Christopher.”

Surprisingly, English is not the first language of 21 spellers, and 102 contestants speak additional other languages. The pronouncer, Dr. Jacques A. Bailly, speaks French and German fluently and teaches ancient Greek and Latin.

Combee plans to compete again next year in 7th grade. To practice, he will work with basic spelling rules and memorize more words from supplied lists. He hopes to set an example for Max, too.

Until then, he’ll play video games, shoot hoops, pass the football, play with his dogs (Wrinkles and Slick), and read series like Harry Potter, Eragon, the Chronicles of Narnia, and Psalms from the Bible.

Combee knows already that leaders are readers and lifelong learners. Keep your eyes on this young champion as he keeps his eyes on the prize.

Every marketing strategy should contain a line item that details how you or your company is going to take advantage

of networking opportunities. So many opportunities are available in Winter Haven that you can find something to fit your schedule and personal preferences. Proactive people not willing to sit and wait for a customer to walk in or call will want to get out there and find opportunities to showcase their businesses.

Focus Magazine is well known for our mixers which are designed to provide a relaxed atmosphere where people can meet new people, see old friends, and perhaps discover new opportunities. For us these are a way to say thank you to our advertisers and to further our goal of helping you grow your businesses. We had a great turnout July 8 and the Sundown Southern Eatery did a great job hosting the event. Thanks to their great staff and to all who attended for making the event special. The appetizers

were incredible and many people stayed afterward to have dinner.

Here’s a story to illustrate my opening remarks. I introduced some folks from a new interior design business to another business owner, and the first words out of his mouth were, “We are going to redecorate our facility,” and I left them talking.

It is not all about making a sale or finding new business opportunities, but it is about finding new friends, and perhaps seeing what we can do to help each other. I hope you can make our next monthly mixer at the Sundown Southern Eatery from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. on August 11, 2010.

F a m i l y H e a l t H C e n t e r sA Division of Winter Haven Hospital

Winter Haven Hospital’s sole mission is ensuring that we have the best medical care we need and deserve.

As a not-for-profit hospital, it is one of the largest employers in the area — more than 2500 employees. When Focus Magazine decided to focus our August issue on a local busines it seemed natural that the hospital deserved our attention, and that by looking at an important part of it we could understand better what a great resource and asset it is.

Focus sat down with Celestino Vega, M.D., FAAFP, a hospital vice president and director of the organization’s Family Health Centers. We meet with Dr. Vega in his office in Haines City.

Focus: How long have you been with the hospital? Where are you from originally?

Dr. Vega: Over 15 years. I grew up in South Florida and completed my residency at the University of Louisville.

Focus: What made you choose Winter Haven and the Hospital?

Dr. Vega: The small town atmosphere; I felt like this would be a place where I could practice family medicine the way it was meant to be practiced. I also considered that it was a great place to raise a family. The hospital had such a great reputation and being a not-for-profit meant a lot to me. Quality of care has always come first.

Focus: You mentioned Winter Haven Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital. What does that mean to your practice of medicine?

Dr. Vega: Winter Haven Hospital is governed by a local board of directors, who are uncompensated, volunteer business and civic leaders. They give their time and talent because they live here, this is their home, and our patients are their families, friends, and neighbors. They are interested in only one thing and that is bringing the best medicine to the people of our community. The members of the hospital and foundation board are involved because they care and they see a need. Working in that environment is incredibly rewarding.

Focus: What is the role of the Family Health Centers as it relates to the mission of the hospital?

Dr. Vega: There is a tremendous need for family physicians in so many communities around the country. The hospital recognizes this in our area and has addressed the issue by recruiting family physicians and creating the seven (7) Family Health Centers in Polk County. The cost of opening and operating a family practice is extremely high. By establishing these offices, Winter Haven Hospital has absorbed some of that burden, and enabled the recruitment of the best and brightest physicians. All our doctors are board certified in family medicine.

There is another benefit, and that is when you have doctors like we have practicing in our Family Health Centers, you are also able to recruit better specialists. So it all works together to bring the best doctors, and provide the best care for our community.

Focus: While we were waiting for you this morning, we visited with some of your staff and they told us you have very little staff turnover in your Family Health Centers. How do you keep your staff which, like doctors, are in short supply and great demand?

Dr. Vega: You’re right, there is a high demand for support staff, and every one of our staff has had to meet the hospital’s quality requirements. We have the best staff in all our offices, just like we have the finest doctors. The reason they stay is the same reason the hospital exists — it gets back to a desire to provide this community with the best health care possible.

Focus: Do you only refer patients to physicians who practice at Winter Haven Hospital?

Dr. Vega: No. We refer our patients where they need to go for the best treatment. In some cases, patients are referred to our associates at the University of Florida Shands Medical Center and other facilities if needed. However, Winter Haven Hospital has the Regency Center for Women and Infants, we have the Center for Behavioral Health and

Focus: What are your goals as a doctor?

Dr. Vega: The same as Winter Haven Hospital’s. I want to earn the trust of my patients by being compassionate and innovative. I want to work with my patient as part of a team. I want to focus on each and every patient I see as a person.

the Center for Psychiatry, the world-class Bostick Heart Center and Cassidy Cancer Center, and we have great specialists. This is good for our patients because there are less barriers, better communications, better use of resources, and ultimately better treatment results.

Focus: Tell us a little about the doctors that practice in the Family Health Centers?

Dr. Vega: We have been able to recruit the very best family physicians, not just doctors who were educated, but doctors that were at the top of their graduating class. We treat a wide spectrum of people, from 2 years-of-age through adulthood, and practice a wide range of medicine. One thing we all have in common is that we treat the person not the disease.

Focus: I first met you and your wife at a function in Winter Haven. How important is community involvement for you and your team?

Dr. Vega: Very important. We are involved in many civic activities, like local Chamber of Commerce’s, and we often volunteer to speak at health fairs. We are here for the community so we all feel it is important to be involved. We don’t just practice medicine here — we live here. This is our home.”

Focus: If you had a platform or soap box what would you say to the people reading this?

Dr. Vega: You know what still surprises me: How many people only come in when they are sick. Prevention is the key to good health and good health is the foundation for a great life. Most of the time things caught early can be treated without medicine, but by simply making a life-style change. The earlier we spot something the better your chances are, and the less treatment you have to endure. It really is important.

the center for personal growth most of the businesses we write about

are easy to describe. Because they offer specific products or services

readers and writers are familiar with, we can easily articulate the benefits of using them. But what about businesses that offer services or products that are new, cutting edge, and thus unfamiliar to us? Today we’re profiling one such business, The Center for Personal Growth.

Focus sat down with four remarkable women: Cara Hewett, M.A., a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and founder

of The Center for Personal Growth; Dr. Jann Lawlor, PT, DPT, Licensed Physical Therapist, formerly of Gessler Clinic; Leslie Farrands, Certified Pilates Instructor; and Sara Frendahl, Certified Yoga Instructor, to allow them to explain what their purpose is and how we may benefit from this new downtown Winter Haven business.

Focus: Cara, why did you open the Center?

Cara: I wanted to bring together like-minded professionals to co-create a positive, supportive environment dedicated

to helping the mental, physical and spiritual wellness of an individual.

Focus: Why do you believe people experience the positive results they do in these types of centers?

Cara: Because centers like ours take a more holistic approach to wellness. By that I mean we view the whole person when we are speaking to or working with a client. We understand that there is a triangular connection, so to speak, of mind, body and spirit, each of which is just one point of the triangle. If there’s a disconnect at one end,

it affects the remaining pieces. Therefore, when you have the resources available to keep the ends connected, individuals can see solutions to many facets of their lives.

Focus: How do you work together?

Jann: When a patient is referred to me, as the physical therapist, I serve as the “movement disorder expert.” The complaint is usually pain related and always affects the person’s ability to move and function. I focus initially on the site-specific area, with the ultimate goal of returning the individual to the activity level prior to

injury. Often the patient is limited by emotional trauma, and I would recommend they seek Cara for counseling.

During therapy, I often use Pilates and Yoga exercise methods to enhance the hands-on therapy. On the other hand, when someone comes initially for yoga/Pilates who’s limited in range of motion or flexibility, they can be referred to me for assistance.

Focus: Can each of you tell me what you bring to the table?

Cara: As a licensed individual and family counselor, I assist people who are experiencing issues and concerns around everyday life, life transitions, anxiety, depression and resolving past events and traumas. I also offer coaching services to

people who want to get the more out of life or want to experience peak performance at work or at home.

Jann: I have 25 years of experience in orthopedic rehabilitation, and I’ve worked extensively with athletes and dancers, of all levels. My approach involves goal achievement with emphasis on educating individuals about where they are now and what can be expected in the future.

Sara: I teach several types of yoga. Every class is designed for the people that are there. Through the postures of yoga and concentrating their breath, students bring their attention to something other than their daily thoughts and concerns. This helps them find a balance that has real benefits physically, mentally and emotionally.

Leslie: I bring an awareness of body that enables individuals to tap into their unique energy source. This takes quite a lot of concentration that cannot be done in the hustle and bustle of a typical gym setting.

Focus: The mind and body are clearly covered by your training, licenses and certifications. What about the spiritual aspect?

Cara: The spiritual aspect of our business is really about how we can serve the community. We have a lot of seminars and ongoing workshops from teens to elders, but it is more than that. It is about our connection to each other as beings having human experiences.

Jann: Here at The Center for Personal Growth, we are all educators, and we feel this

improved knowledge of self empowers one with the ability to be the best they can be.

Leslie: When the mind is clear and the body can move freely, the power of life can fill you up.

Sara: Our spirits soar when given a safe place to practice away from the competitive world.

Focus: Who should visit the Center?

Cara: People looking for a place where they can grow mentally, physically or spiritually.

citizens bank & trustWe had an appointment to interview Greg Littleton, the president and CEO of Citizens Bank & Trust. I had left something in the car and went outside to retrieve it. As I was walking to the car I noticed two gentlemen walking toward me through the parking lot. Both were neatly dressed, but one man was taller than the other and younger; he wore slacks, a dress shirt and tie. The other wore jeans, a ball cap, work shirt, and boots. Greg was the first fellow and the other was Citizens Bank & Trust’s Chairman, Latt Wilson. As we sat down with Greg for the interview it became apparent that Citizens Bank & Trust is a different kind of bank,

and that difference starts with these two men and a 90-year history of being the community’s bank.

Focus: Greg, Citizens Bank and Trust is celebrating 90 years in business this year. Why do you think you’ve made it in what seems like a pretty tough industry?

Greg: I think it has to do a lot with our ownership. The same family has owned the bank for all that time and they are committed to the community and to the business of banking. Over the years they could have done very well off the sale of the bank, but they really believe they are

supporting the community, and that is very important to them.

Focus: You started with a single location in Frostproof. How many locations do you have now?

Greg: The bank started in Frostproof and has grown to 12 locations. In the last ten years we’ve grown from $46 million in assets to $460 million, but that isn’t what we focus on. We don’t have a goal of becoming a billion dollar bank; our focus is on serving the communities we operate in.

Focus: I saw you walking in today with your Chairman. He didn’t look like a New York banker. How does that affect the way you do business?

Greg: Latt Wilson is a third generation Chairman of our bank. We only have 7 stockholders and because they live here, they really know our community, the industries here, and the people. It really enhances the way we do business, because they are local. If we need to make a big decision we can have a definitive answer in a couple of days.

Focus: How important are your employees to your success?

Greg: We have 150 employees today and over a third have joined us in the last three years, but they are critical to our success. All banks have savings accounts, and the interest rates charged and paid are very close. The only difference is our people and our service. Because we take it so seriously, we have employee nights out with a chance to enjoy each other’s company. The last couple of years have been very hard on the industry, and we want our employees to know that we appreciate them and what they do.

Focus: Greg I know that you take pride in the fact that CB&T didn’t take bailout money. What do you think it says about your bank?

Greg: Three things. First, that we are a well-run bank with sound management and ownership. Second, that we are financially sound, and third, it is simply against our principles for our business to be propped up

by the government. We would have found another way. In fact, there is a legend about Mr. Maxcy, the founder, during the Great Depression. The story is told as true that when folks were making runs on small banks, Mr. Maxcy took the train to New York and returned with two suitcases full of cash to be sure he had enough cash for his depositors.

Focus: I understand that you have a credit committee that meets and reviews loan applications. Besides the numbers that all banks consider, what do you look for?

Greg: We look at all the numbers that every bank looks at, but then we go a little deeper. Because we know our communities so well, the people and industries, we also look at the history of the borrower, the character, and the business their in. We ask questions like, “Is this the only time in the last twenty years they have had a problem?’ We try to use common sense and don’t depend on a computer to tell us if a person is credit worthy.

Focus: What have you accomplished that you are most proud of?

Greg: The last ten years or so have been extraordinary. We’ve grown to twelve locations, nearly half a billion dollars in assets while still running a good clean bank. I’m also proud of the great team of bankers we’ve been able to assemble.

Focus: I know that the Bank supports and is involved with non-profits in the area. What are you involved in currently?

Greg: We support the Heart Association, and this year I’m the Chairman of the Heart Walk. We do a lot with Polk County Art and Lake Wales Art Associations, and we support a lot of things for our children, including a program that starts in August where we contribute to Our Children’s Academy every time some one opens up a checking account.

Focus: As a business leader and as a community leader, what do you think about the future of east Polk County?

Greg: I’m excited and I believe it is going to be big. CSX, Legoland, and Polytech are going to provide jobs and Polk State College offering four-year degrees now is great for our education system. This is a great place to live with many of the amenities of a larger community, but we still have that warm, small town feel. It is also a great place to do business.

Focus: As the President of CB&T, what do want Focus readers to know?

Greg: It is hard to convey until someone experiences it, but while we are in business one of our core principles is to care about our community and help our neighbors. We know everything else will work out if we just stay true to that principle.

implant and comprehensive dentistry When you first enter Dr. Hewett’s

office you may notice the well-decorated space is calming and like

every aspect of his practice, designed to put you at ease. Dr. Hewett knows firsthand the anxieties and fears some people have when they simply think of going to the dentist. He also knows how dental problems can keep a person from smiling and living life to their fullest.

Dr. Hewett received his education in dentistry from Emory University. For the past 20 years, Dr. Hewett has practiced in Winter Haven. He has recently opened a second office in Davenport across from Heart of Florida Hospital. He has also dedicated himself to the advancement of the profession. He offers expertise and knowledge to his patients, other dental professionals, and dental students. He even volunteers himself and his family to provide dental services to those with

no access to care in remote regions of the world.

“Just like every other kid growing up, I did not like going to the dentist. In an unfortunate auto accident at age 13, I had massive trauma to my jaw and teeth which led me to many visits to the dentist. I can certainly empathize with my patients who are fearful.

I offer my patients minimal distress during

dental procedures which result in most patients reporting little to know pain. You can be aggressive or you can be gentle, but if you care about your patients you have to care about their experience”

Many patients come into the office suffering from problems caused by years of smoking, neglect, or poor oral hygiene. “We treat everyone with dignity and respect. We don’t scold or reprimand patients,” said Natalie Roofner, a team

member for over six years. “I don’t care how their teeth got this way. I’m just glad they’re here,” agreed Dr. Hewett. “Our job is to help them move forward and improve their smiles.”

A dental practice is not just the dentist. It’s also the staff. “We ask every client what they are concerned about today. We listen to their concerns which range from not just questions regarding actual dental procedures, but also the financial impact.” Natalie said. “We work as a team to provide the best care, to make every patient’s visit pleasant, and to take our practice to the next level.” About Dr. Hewett she said, “We call him McGyver after the TV character because of the creative way he solves our patients concerns. Whether it is a difficult case or a financial

issue, Dr. Hewett is a creative problem solver.

Dr. Hewett’s practice relies on technology to help the office run as efficiently as possible. All records are computerized and displayed on monitors in the exam rooms. This impressed Jimmy Williams and his wife, Margy. They have always taken their dentistry seriously and have used many dentists over their 50 years together. When they were looking for a new dentist closer to their retirement home, they called on Dr. Hewett because of patient testimonials. That was over four years ago, and they’ve been happy with the change, to say the least.

“I’ve been to good dentists that had egos and used the knowledge gap to try and intimidate or pressure me. Dr. Hewett is

down to earth, a real person who never hurries and always takes time for me,” Jimmy said when we sat down with the couple. It was obvious to us that this couple had a comfortable relationship with both the doctor and his staff. “They are very compassionate people,” Margy told us. When I asked what they thought the people of East Polk County should know about Dr. Hewett, Jimmy spoke first: “He is a superb dentist and individual.” Then Margy added,

“They should know how fortunate they are to have a dentist and a person of his caliber here.”

In Dentistry there are three elements to consider - the artistry and ability of the dentist, the technology and science of dentistry, and finally, the human or patient relationship element. From what we learned from talking to Dr. Hewett, his staff, and his patients, Dr. Hewett gets an “A” in all three.

city of winter havenThe Winter Haven Fire Department is

receiving national attention as a 2010 SAFER Success Story. The attention

comes after the WHFD received a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant in 2008

SAFER grant funding was used to hire eight additional firefighters. Citing the July 2009 fire at Winter Haven Manor, a multi-story senior adult apartment complex, the SAFER Success Story says the additional funding

makes it possible for the Fire Department to meet the “two in, two out” rule. The rule requires two officers be available to provide immediate rescue when two firefighters are inside working a fire scene.

The new firefighters joined the City of Winter Haven in June 2009, just a few weeks before a major fire occurred at the apartment complex. When firefighters arrived, the 10-story high-rise was already engulfed in heavy smoke, with flames coming from the second-floor.

City fire officials have said the additional manpower, brought on board through the SAFER grant, played a key role in the successful suppression of a potentially deadly fire incident. Through the SAFER grant, the Fire Department is able to more efficiently and effectively protect the citizens of Winter Haven.

Public Safety is very important for any city, and the City of Winter Haven is no exception. In the coming year, Fire and Police Services are budgeted at more than $16 million.

Thanks to the SAFER grant, the department was able to use the extra firefighters to quickly contain the fire, as well as rescue five people from the building. During the incident, firefighters also assisted more than 80 residents, some of them disabled, who had to evacuate their homes and relocate temporarily.

The Winter Haven Fire Department has an extensive training program that has included training sessions at the Winter Haven Manor facility, as well as other multi-story residential buildings in the city. Residents are

involved during training in such facilities so that they know better how to respond during a fire, too. The training paid off this time.

The Winter Haven Firemen’s Association assisted fire victims, most of whom had no insurance, to replace furniture and clothing and firefighters worked off duty to help residents move belongings.

The Winter Haven Fire Department was established in 1911. Covering a more than 40-square-mile area, today the department operates out of three stations, including the new Fire Safety Complex. This facility, at U.S. 17 S and Avenue G SW, serves as the City’s main fire station. There are four engine companies, a ladder company and several support units. With the addition of the eight firefighters, the Winter Haven Fire Department has 69 firefighters on staff.

The Winter Haven SAFER Success Story was featured in a recent issue of the FEMA Newsletter and is featured on the FEMA website. To read Winter Haven’s story, and those of other cities, visit: www.firegrantsupport.com/content/html/safer.

Winter haven audiologybusiness milestoneThirty years is a long time. Think back to what you were doing 30 years ago, what you were paying for gas, milk, or a new car. In technology driven industries 30 years is several lifetimes, and in any business 30 years is a major accomplishment. Dr. Kevin Barlow of Winter Haven Audiology is celebrating this remarkable achievement.

Focus sat down with Dr. Barlow, a man extremely comfortable, pleasant, and knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects, to discover his secret to success, and learn more about the man and his business.

Focus: Dr. Barlow, congratulations on your success. To what do you attribute your longevity?

Dr. Barlow: I believe it stems from our focus on being professional, providing great service, and developing trust by doing what you say your going to do. I also think that being a Doctor of Audiology, having the extensive training I have, goes a long way in people trusting you initially, but to last 30

years you have to stand behind your work and treat people the way they deserve to be treated.

Focus: Where did you receive your education?

Dr. Barlow: I received my Bachelors and Masters in Audiology from Michigan State University, and my Doctorate from the Arizona School of Health Sciences.

Focus: I know a lot of hearing aide businesses use the designation “Hearing Specialist”. What is the difference?

Dr. Barlow: The State of Florida requires only a high school diploma, six months work experience and that the candidate pass a state exam to be a Hearing Specialist. The difference in education and training is why most doctors and nurses trust their patients to Doctors of Audiology.

Focus: In 30 years you must have seen some remarkable changes in the technology of your business?

Dr. Barlow: Absolutely. We have seen a major leap in the technology every three to four years. Research into hearing aide devices is driven by innovations in microchip technology and audio technology, like stereos. The military has also played a big role because they need smaller, durable communication devices with better fidelity. We have better products now than ever before.

Focus: In your business you have the demands of changing technology, changing science, and I suppose all the demands of business. What are the business demands you face today that you didn’t face 30 years ago?

Dr. Barlow: Business today seems more complicated than it was in the past. I spend a lot of my time working to reduce the expense of running the practice. I have to do this because I don’t control the price of the devices, and now more than ever I have to do what I can to make them affordable. The manufacturers have helped us by developing products within pricing tiers from basic to

premium. This has allowed us to match a device not only to a patients’ hearing needs, but to their budget as well.

Focus: After 30 years, what do you like about your job?

Dr. Barlow: Any sensory loss a person suffers causes them to be isolated from the rest of us. I still love what I do because I see people transformed. I see them joining in situations and conversations that they used to avoid. Our hearing is so important to our experience of the world that assisting someone in hearing better can profoundly affect his or her quality of life.

I also like owning my own practice, because I get to set the tempo of my day. I work with a lot of children, but most of my patients are older, and I love taking the time to learn about them and their lives. I’m always surprised to find out what they’ve done and who they are. We have some really interesting people living here, and I enjoy their stories. I know why they have been called, “The Greatest Generation.”

Focus: What do you do away from the office?

Dr. Barlow: I play golf. I like to fly my plane. My wife Linda and I like to travel, enjoy the Tampa Bay Rays and work in our yard. She has created a little Garden of Eden in our backyard. I am also a member of the Winter Haven Lions Club and I volunteer in their hearing aide program. We provide reconditioned hearing aides to qualified adults and new hearing aides to children who can’t afford them and don’t qualify for other programs.

Focus: What would you like to tell the folks reading this?

Dr. Barlow: I would like to correct two misperceptions. The first is that most people believe hearing aides will cure hearing loss. Hearing aides are assistive devices, not corrective. Eyeglasses correct vision, hearing aides help but do not correct. A person with hearing loss still has a hearing loss, just not as much of a loss.

The second issue relates to how we should communicate with a person with hearing loss. We must try to first get their attention, and then speak a little slower while we look at them. People with hearing loss need to see your face so they can lip read. By doing this, the time spent with your loved one will be more enjoyable for all.

professional ‘green’ painting…..in any Color!legion bros. painting, inc.Environmental awareness and the future

are foremost at Legion Bros. Painting. Business partners Trent Roofner and

Shannon Shelley have a solid foundation of experience, knowledge, credentials and caring for our world. They have gone to great measures to keep in synchronization with ‘Green’ technology.

At a time when most businesses are concentrating on the bottom line, Legion Bros. Painting is putting the customer and the environment first. LBP really pushes all of the Green paints from Sherman-Williams. They always prefer to use these products, as they are the best according to Trent and Shannon. At LBP no harmful paints or solvents are dumped into the ground. “We are geared to the future. Our motto is: WE ARE THE FUTURE”, Trent said. This company clearly wants the future to be better than the present.

The partners believe they are the only painting company that really makes an effort to be ‘GREEN’. Everything they do, from the materials they use to their new vehicle shows the commitment. LBP just purchased a 2010 Ford Transit Connect. These bright businessmen believe it is the right thing for the environment and the economy. The

Transit Connect is a spacious, fuel efficient alternative to larger commercial vehicles. It recently was named the 2010 North American Truck of the Year! Trent and Shannon had an eye-catching wrap installed on the Truck at Jarrett-Gordon Ford in Winter Haven. They are extremely excited about this addition to the company.

Depending on the schedule at LBP, there could be 2-5 employees in addition to partners Trent and Shannon. The partners have 20 years of professional painting experience. They often are mistaken for brothers, so they thought it would be a great idea to incorporate ‘Bros’ into their business name. The word Legion has a strong, military and American meaning so they combined the words and legally incorporated as Legion Bros. Painting, Inc.

LBP is one of only four Certified Vella Venetian Plaster installers in the state of Florida. This is a first class company on the cutting edge of coatings application. The following is a sampling of services available: Commercial Painting, Residential Painting, Venetian Plaster, Faux Finishes, Wood Graining, Acid Staining, Custom Woodwork Finishing, and Pressure Washing. For customer convenience, all major credit cards are accepted. LBP uses a portable wireless

credit card terminal to quickly document transactions.

Legion Bros. Painting, Inc. is a Federal Registered Contractor which takes them out of state on occasion. They are also preferred

vendors with Polk County Facilities Management/Public Works Division. More customers come from advertising, networking, the company website www.legionbros.com, and of course…word of mouth from many satisfied customers.

For a professional painting company that will do a fine, clean and ‘GREEN’ job, contact Trent or Shannon at Legion Bros. Painting, Inc. Your call will make a green difference for your project and the environment.

iamsterdam panini Café

over a decade ago two young men from Amsterdam, Holand moved to central Florida. They developed a business

plan for a bakery featuring breads and other goods like those offered at the bakeries where they had apprenticed back home. Without a significant amount of capital, banks would not loan them the money needed to open the bakery. Not to be deterred, the young men went to work and built up the resources they needed to turn their dream into a reality.

They built a full size windmill, like those famous back in Holland, to mark their bakery in Haines City (Doughmonde Bakery Cafe), and shortly afterward Mom and Dad joined them in the family business. The downturn in the economy forced a difficult decision to close the bakery, which had fifteen employees, and downsize to the Panini Café they opened last September. This is a true family business with David and Karin running the store and Harvey, Joan and Val present and working everyday.

Iamsterdam Panini Café offers fresh salads, homemade soups, sandwiches with cool names, or you can Van Gogh it, a nod to Holland’s famous painter, and create your

own panini sandwich. What sets them apart from other sandwich shops is what you will and will not find in their kitchen. They roast all their own meats, bake their own breads from scratch, and Joan creates the spreads, sauces, and soups. What you will not find is processed deli meats, massed produced baked goods, or canned soups and pesto. Why? Because underneath the great tasting food is a commitment to providing healthy food for their customers, and freshness is the foundation to healthy food with great taste.

Taking their commitment to your health to another level. They specialize in food nutrition and brother Val, who is also a nutritionalist, created their unique “Zerocarb” bread. This bread made with flax seed (a great source of fiber and Omega 3 fatty acids) is gluten, sugar, and starch free. Seasoned with rosemary and basil it tastes good, too, making it a healthy choice for lunch or dinner.

David told us that the name of the Café’ has another meaning, “We are opening another restaurant at Miller’s Landing right down Cypress Gardens Boulevard in the next few months. It will be called Iampasta. We focus on the Iam because we believe “I am

what I eat.” We want people to be able to eat healthier without giving up great taste. So the Iam name is what we want to grow.”

I have eaten here several times and can recommend anything on the menu; however, two of the most popular Panini are the 3

Cheese Roast Beef, and the Turkey Pesto Panini. Iamsterdam is open for breakfast (featuring a European style breakfast menu with Belian waffles, fresh baked muffins, ham and cheese croissants and of coourse steaming cappaccinos, lattes, and expresso. ), lunch and dinner six days a week. They also offer catering and delivery, and for special occasions will bake up exclusive treats like their famous Dutch cheesecake.

You don’t have to take my word for it. I asked local resident and frequent patron Carol Harris why she ate here and she said, “Three reasons – the way I’m treated, the food is better, and it is healthier.” She added, “If you care about your health and are looking for healthy choices, you should eat at Iamsterdam.”

We agree.
