Report from the Western Eparchy Assembly for 2015
Submitted by Shirley Wozimirsky
The Western Eparchy Assembly was held on October 23 & 24, 2015 at the St.
John’s Cultural Centre in Edmonton. There were 20 clergy, 49 laity and 11 guests
for a total of 80 people attending the Seminar. There were many reports
presented but I will only provide you with the highlights.
Bishop Ilarion stressed that it is very important that the members partake of the
Holy Eucharist every Sunday. There are three events held for the youth 10 years
to 18 years every year – Banff (in spring), Youth summit at the Western Eparchy
and banquet for all youth that participate in the church. There are about 30 – 35
youth who participate in Banff and in the summit.
Our camp programs are doing very well. Camp Kolomayka in B.C. is limited to 50
campers since they rent their facilities. Camp Bar-V-Nok had only 59 campers
since the camp was held at St. Basil’s in August this year. Kiev’s-K-Hi camp had
437 campers and it ran from July 5-August 9, 2015 (6 weeks) There were 109 (5-
7years) campers for 1 week. The camp was well run according to Rev. Peter
Haugen who presented the report.
Chancellor Very Rev. Taras Udod reported that the consistory is in debt, the
building in disrepair and 3 lots with no plans for their use. The Metropolitan’s
residence has been sold and other accommodations were arranged for him. The
consistory is dependent on levies for its survival. There are $60,000.00 of levies
that have not been paid by parishes. The annual levy increase for the next 4 years
is $5.00 per person per year. There are currently 37 inactive parishes that are
slated for closure or sale. The church goods store at the consistory is slated for
closure in 30 months (2 ½ years). The membership fee to the Western Eparchy
will remain at $15.00 per person for 2016.
There are 73 active parishes and 2,421 members that are active in 2014 in Alberta
and B.C. The membership in the Edmonton parishes for 2014 are as follows:
Cathedral of St. John – 320 St. Elia - 105
St. Andrew’s Sobor – 314 St. Michael - 108
St. Anthony - 192
Only one resolution was passed and that was for a Church School Workshop.

Bazaar! Bazaar! Bazaar! For the past couple of months the men and women have been busy preparing for the Christmas Bazaar which will take place on Saturday, December 5. A sincere thank you to all the people who have come out to the pyrohy and cabbage roll workshops. I am also encouraging members to bake their special cake, bread, buns, for the bake sale. All items should be brought to the hall by 9:00 a.m. for pricing and placing on the table. As in the past, on December 5 meals will also be available. Enjoy a plate of freshly cooked pyrohy and cabbage rolls and sausage or ham. We will be accepting crafts and gently used articles for the craft table. This bazaar is a major fundraiser for the Women’s Association and almost all of our money is donated to the Parish to be used for operating expenses. We graciously ask for your support for this function.
Women’s Annual Meeting This is an urgent appeal to all the women, members and non-members, to attend the Women’s Annual Meeting on Monday, December 14. Elections will be held for an executive for the upcoming year. We currently do not have any vice president or a nominating chairman. I have been president since 1999 with the exception of 5 years when Mary Ann Euchak was president. I will not have my name stand for the position of president. Change is good and with change come new ideas. We now have the expertise of a chef, so functions are easier to plan. This is an appeal to all women, support the UWAC and come to the Annual Meeting. This will be a supper meeting starting at 6:00 pm.
Bishop’s Tea St. Elias Church Sunday, October 5, 2015
Dobr. Tatiana Suchevan pours tea and Andreanna Salouk is ready to serve while Dobr. Jeannette Rauliuk wait her turn to pour tea. Andreanna and Sophia Salouk both volunteered to assist in serving tea at St. Elias Church. They both wore Ukrainian shirts and they graciously served the guests. Well done girls, we are so proud of you.
Parish Khram Sunday, November 22 At the Parish Khram, the Women’s Association will recognize their members for long service. Women who have been a member of SOYUEZ for 5, 10, 15, 20, etc years will be specially invited to attend this function. Tickets to the Khram are $20.00 per person. The women who will be recognized will receive a free meal at the Khram. These women will be notified in advance.
