Solemnity of All Saints

Follow the

saints,

because those

who follow

them will

-St. Clement I

From the Pastor’s Desk

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

St. Paul once wrote: “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). In this, we find the foundation for our devotion to the saints. Especially this week, as we celebrate the Feast of All Saints on November 1, we honor those that imitated Jesus Christ, for the very fact that their lives are reflections of the life of Jesus. The saints are our models in the way of Christian perfection – that is, we see in them how the grace of God can transform hearts and lives. Countless stories of the saints tell how great sinners were converted into holy men and women – e.g. St. Paul, St. Augustine, St. Mary Magdalene. We hear in the stories of the saints how God’s grace turned fear into courage and strength, so that they were willing to give their lives for Christ—e.g. St. Peter, St. Edith Stein, St. Maximilian Kolbe. We even find stories of the saints in which God’s grace helped them to live out their vocations as husbands and wives, priests and single people in extraordinary ways: Sts. Louis & Zelie Martin, St. John Bosco, St. Gianna Beretta Molla. All of these individuals, and many more, glorify God now in the joys of Heaven, where they now intercede for us in our need, and pray that we may one day enter into that same eternal glory.

What do the lives of saints mean for us? There are at least four ways that their lives directly impact how we live and how we consider our relationship with God: 1) We strive to ground our lives on the virtues and principles that

guided the lives of the saints. In all things, they were guided by faith in God, hope in His promises, and love for God and neighbor—supernatural values that did not allow them to be distracted or swayed by selfish human motives.

2) The saints are meant to be an inspiration and example to us in how to live our lives. How they practiced the virtues that guided their lives should inspire us to the same practice of dedicated service of God, complete surrender to God’s will, detachment from our dependence on worldly things, and advancement in the life of prayer and self-sacrifice. We imitate the saints, not by merely reproducing their actions, but by endeavoring in our lives to reproduce the traits of the life of Jesus.

3) We glorify God in all that He accomplished through these men and women, for they were able to rise to such great heights not through their own power. It was only through the power of God working in and through them. It is a cause for wonder and awe in the presence of so great a God who wants to and can do the same things in us.

4) In considering the lives of the saints, we form a proper idea of the dignity and greatness of the saints, and hold onto a lively hope and desire to attain the same greatness. Our lives are shaped consciously and unconsciously by our ideals. Our worldview, and thus how we live, changes if we believe that true greatness is found by fostering a likeness to God in our life, and not by attaining worldly goods such as wealth, status or accomplishment. The saints are considered great, not because they did good things, but because they decided to obey Jesus’ command: “Follow me”. And in doing so, they came to resemble Jesus Christ, who is the perfect realization of human greatness.

I hope that you will take time this Feast of All Saints to glorify God in His saints by attending one of our Masses. The Feast Day is a holy day of obligation for all Catholics. We have quite the variety of Mass times among our parishes to fit all sorts of busy schedules. See a full listing of the Masses among our five parishes in this bulletin. Come and celebrate the good work God accomplishes in His saints, the countless men, women and children who have given their lives to Him in faith, hope and love. Call upon their prayers that we too may advance in the ways of holiness and one day be counted among the blessed.

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]

Although abortion is legal in all 50 states, can pro-life laws and policies benefit unborn babies? YES! Consider the evidence in our own state: In 1980 2,327 minors received abortions. In 1981 MN passed a law requiring that both parents be notified at least 48 hours

before an abortion is performed. In 2017 the number of abortions performed on minors in MN plummeted 89 % to just 248. Babies’ lives were saved!

In 2003 the Woman’s Right to Know informed consent law allowed that basic factual information about the risks and alternatives of abortion be given to women who were abortion-minded. In 2017 alone, over 1100 women opted against taking the lives of their unborn babies.

In 2005 the Positive Alternatives Act created a program to provide grants to pregnancy care and other resource centers that assist women in difficult circumstances offer life-affirming alternatives to abortion. It is estimated that thousands of women have been helped through this program.

Pro-life laws continue to save lives. Thousands of Minnesotans are alive today who would have perished in the womb if not for pro-life laws. New pro-life laws can only be enacted if we elect pro-life candidates in 2018. Pray for the end of abortion and vote pro-life on November 6th.

Please contact Fr. Adams if you would like to attend or have questions.

All parishioners of all ages, come to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during the DTS gatherings. We especially need adorers to commit to be before our Lord for an hour during the 6-9PM gathering time. Also, we need cooks willing to help make and serve a meal to the kids. If you are able to help in either capacity, contact Fr. Adams or the parish office and let us know.

Parish Stewardship World Mission Sunday

Celebrating our Missionary Spirit

Pope Francis in his 2018 World Mission Sunday message states, “Together with

young people, let us bring the Gospel to all” calling to mind the active and joyful activities of youth as they witness the Gospel message through serving the poor and elderly in parishes. Thus, this weekend, we celebrate World Mission Sunday with the theme Witnessing Faith through the Hearts of Youth highlighting the passion of the youth in St. Vincent de Paul Society at the parish of Jesucristo Resucitado, Venezuela. This diocese is an example of one receiving support from the World Mission Sunday appeal. Please be as generous as you are able and help support over 1,100 mission dioceses worldwide. For your convenience we have placed envelopes in the church entrances. Please drop in this weekend’s collection basket or bring to the parish office.

The January–April Altar Ministry Schedule will be put together soon. Please submit dates that you are unavailable to serve to the parish office or email [email protected] by Monday, Nov 26. Please remember Masses on the following days when you are looking at your calendar:

Ash Wednesday - March 6, 9AM, 5:30PM & 7PM Holy Thursday - April 18, 7PM Good Friday - April 19, 3PM Easter Vigil - April 20, 8:30PM Easter Sunday - April 21, 8AM (StH), 10AM (StM)

It’s also very helpful to know if you are able and willing to serve one of the above Masses. Thank you!
